Coming into this discussion late (how in the world did I miss this last week?), I'm glad that this edition is finally coming out.
No, it's not all that it "could" or probably "should" be, but it's still way ahead of the lame edition that came out last year. I'm in the camp that sighs about no EE probably ever coming, but thankfully, CR is an incredible film even without that.
I do wonder, though, why everybody's getting so indignant about getting "cheated" and whatnot. This has been the standard for nearly a decade: Theatrical release, DVD release, movie-geek DVD release 1-2 years later. This is nothing new, and nothing that should have been unexpected. Whether it's right or wrong, it's the system, and we can't have our cake and eat it too. We can have the movie as-is (and believe me, the studios will do all they can to make it look appetizing) several months after the theatrical release, or we can wait a year or so and have the "special" edition that takes
time to produce, with all the stuff that hardcore fans care about. We can rant on and on about how unfair it is, but it's the way it is.
This was an extremely predictable move, and one that I've paid consequences for as well. I never bought the initial release, so I haven't been able to watch and savor the film anytime I wanted (and I also probably wasted money by renting it a few times). But I get to buy this one, with the commentaries and deleted scenes and making-of docs that I wanted. They're still consequences, just different from the ones that come from buying the film straight away and getting pissed about "having" to buy it again.
And yes, if CR comes out in an Even-Better-Edition down the road, we'll just have to weigh the costs and decide if it's worth paying more money for it again. Just like we've already done with the SE/UE versions of the Bond collection.
For future reference: This will, in all probability, happen with QOS, too. Don't be surprised.
