Okay. I can agree with all of that. But wasn't STAR WARS '77 sold on its effects? It sure wasn't George Lucas's skill at dialogue.I think its obvious that the last 2 indy films have been less inspired compared with the energy and enthusiasum of the first 2. Ten year olds are not going to get the sense of awe that the original Raiders 10 yr olds did. The films are not as good. They have poor scripts.
I think what stamper was saying is that in CR they have tried to hide the CGI and other FX. They used it as they had to to tell the story, but most films don't do this. They flaunt it as a way to sell the film
And another thing worth thinking here is who are these FX guys now? They ARE those kids raised on RAIDERS and STAR WARS. And even that generation turn out something like THE INCREDIBLE HULK which - from the trailer - looks all over the place effects wise and a fitting companion piece to THE FANTASTIC FOUR.
I think the faults of KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL do not fall at the feet of its special effects. I liked the film and enjoyed it for what it was. But the visual effects team had nothing to do with the tennis match of drafts the script went through to such a point the film was trying to mask its alien leanings (instead of embracing them) and didn't know what its moral Ark or Grail actually was. It just goes to show that America is really worried about upsetting God because Frank Darabont's draft of the script wanted to push more antagonistic aliens, a plane / UFO chase across the US desert and the suggestion that alien civilisations are responsible for all of man's notions of God. Apparently.
My, how we've strayed.
