Bond Film Irritations

1) Kutze being pushed off the boat in Thunderball and his subsequent vanishing.
2) Not knowing which version of Thunderball is the version intended to be seen - 'sorry old chap better luck next time' or 'now you can tell about the one that got away'.
3) The credits fading out early in Thunderball.
4) Why did Bond not get in that car with Hip and the fighting girls in TMWTGG?
5) The circular blue imprint seen briefly on the pre credits of the TSWLM in the skiing sequence.
6) David Arnold's over reliance of the Bond theme in the Brosnan films, so predictable and boring.

I got quite irritated by the PTS of Goldfinger, Bond kisses the girl, that parts fine, but why didn't he move his mouth? All he did was put his mouth over hers for about 10 seconds. No movement at all
I've noticed that this has happened alot in the early movies.
I thought perhaps it was because he was concentrating on the movement of the thug reflected in her eyes.

OR, if it was real, where did M get a video copy? Why does he treat it like it's a training exercise.
By the way, the music in the NSNA PTS is beyond irritating. I can't watch it with the sound turned up!

He was shooting blanks... and, no, that's not meant as innuendo.Oh, one other irritant. Is the PTS of NSNA a training session or not? Was it real or fake. If it was a fake training session it sure looks like Bond snuffs out his fellow trainees and really gets knifed in the end. Pretty brutal training exercise if you ask me.

As for the knife, it was probably one of those collapsable fakes. Personally, I like the scene; the PTS that really riles me up is DAF's. Grrrrrr...

Or just start counting down from 10 or 15. It seems like a This Is Spinal Tap problem: "Why don't you just make 10 the highest and set it at 10?" "...this one goes up to 11."I'm watching On Her Majestys Secret Service atm. And I've noticed something really irritating. When Draco counts down from 5 seconds when he's waiting for Piz Gloria to be destroyed. He counts down from 5, when he's finsihed, Piz Gloria doesn't blow up straight away. In fact, an extra 8 seconds is added to allow Blofeld and Bond time to escape. The scene would benifit greatly if it were intercut imo.

Agreed on the DAF PTS being the worst ever. I started a thread on that once.

This is how they kissed in old movies. Watch a few movies from the 40s, 50s and early 60s and you will see this alot. Anything more would be deemed pørnographic. Remember that American TV shows wouldn't show Elvis below the waist, because his hip movements were deemed shocking.
Innocent times!

If there's a theme to these personal irritations, it is, I suppose, musical. These "outside tunes" just don't belong in a Bond film, imo (with the possible exception of "London Calling" by The Clash in DAD - that seemed quite apt, in the circumstances).

Well, I don't think it's supposed to be a straight up "serious" scene. It establishes that Mathis is experienced, connected and chilled. It's also in line with Mathis' later scene where he states "being dead does not mean one can't still be helpful." The whole film has a dark/humour balance running through it. Look at the torture scene.Michael G. Wilson's cameo in Casino Royale. It's as if he's practically begging for the audience's attention in what is supposed to be a serious scene.

I liked the Wilson scene as well, because as you say it is really Mathis's scene. I liked the line "its amazing what you can do with Photoshop these days!", the police chief, according to Mathis, being well and truly framed by it.Well, I don't think it's supposed to be a straight up "serious" scene. Wilson's cameos have never bothered me. Some are vaguely memorable but most are blink and you would miss him stuff, like Hitchcock's. And most of the cinema going public wouldn't notice him from the next man.

That was one of the best shots in the movie of the mirror with her car and her faint face shimmering.

"Pre-credits of OHMSS - when being chased by Tracy in her red car thing, whatever it is, she moves out one way, as seen in the rear view mirror, but overtakes on the other side. And it isn't a mirror image. Annoys me every time. "
That was one of the best shots in the movie of the mirror with her car and her faint face shimmering.
True enough, and probably why the error is so irritating.

That we ever got to see Blofeld's face, or that he became the villain "in the field" in YOLT and DAF.
All of DAF.
Silliness in the Moore era like the tarzan call and Barbara Woodhouse "sit" in OP and the Beach Boys in AVTAK.
Weak casting of Marayam D'Abo in TLD.
The hilariously awful line "I love James so much..." in LTK.
Theme songs in the Brosnan era: GE was fantastic...but TND, TWINE, and DAD are rubbish.
Bond driving a BMW.
Jonathan Pryce's performance in TND.
All of DAD.
The notion that the return of Q and Moneypenny in Bond 23 will add anything in the Craig era.

But Wilson doesn't establish even the SLIGHEST possible menance, which the dialogue indicates he should be. It's like a Warner Bros. cartoon. You expect to see neon signs saying something, "HEY, HERE'S QUANTUM COLLABORATOR! YO, BOND! THIS GUY IS IN THE EMPLOY OF THE BAD GUYS!" Wilson draws attention to himself. All of this IMHO.

(I'm talking about the Blu-ray version of QUANTUM, but doubtless the standard DVD also has an irritating sound mix that gives far too much prominence to the music.)
Another thing that hacks me off about my QUANTUM Blu-ray is that it always automatically starts playing with English subtitles, forcing me to turn them off. Heaven knows why this happens.

When the cars come roaring out of the tunnel at the start of QUANTUM OF SOLACE, so does the music. The music is, in fact, mixed SO PREPOSTEROUSLY FREAKIN' LOUD that I have to turn the volume right down for fear that my neighbours will see me in court. Trouble is, as soon as the dialogue kicks in I can't hear what anyone's saying. And so I turn the volume up again, only for David bleedin' Arnold to come blasting in at such a ludicrously earsplitting volume that I find myself tromboning the volume control for practically the entire time I'm watching the thing.

Well, composers are always trying to fight with the sound effects guys for sound dominance, since often in action films these days - The sound effects are propitiously loud. Hence it's a sort of perpetual arms race, with each getting louder in the mix out of competition.
Though to be honest, most film music today is so mediocre (as with QOS) or plain poor, that it doesn't deserve to be heard. Hence a lot of films today probably actually benefit from being swamped by multi-channel sound effects.
But over all, I agree. In the cinema I found a lot of the dialogue to be near inaudible (particularly when you have actors with such thick accents as the fellow who plays Medrano, or Giancarlo Giannini) with too much emphasis given to ambient sound effects and score.

Nah, it's English subtitles for the hard of hearing. I switch on QUANTUM OF SOLACE and up comes "ENGINES REVVING", followed by "AUTOMATIC GUNFIRE". For some strange reason this feature switches itself on automatically. Hasn't happened with any of the many other Blu-ray discs I've fed into my player.

That would be annoying.
It's the same with DVDs that insist on playing the movie rather than taking you straight to the menu screen.

Of course he draws attention to himself. How can he not? The guy is caught with police surrounding him. He’s the centre of attention with everybody looking.

I personally do not believe you’re going to be exuding sinister menace in that scenario. More like disbelief and helpless annoyance. Not to mention embarrassment. He already had a “useless reputation”, and he’s well and truly weak now. And that’s what I see in Wilson’s performance. Bond, along with the viewer, gets a laugh out of it.
Read what gang members and the like say about being roared up by night raids on their home. They are largely docile and shocked. Wilson’s character is getting that done in front of everyone, where he felt comfortable.
