I sort of knew - judging by my experiences with other stuff - that the best is yet to come.
Be patient, Grasshopper!

Once again, proof-positive the we, as consumers, exist only to be mined over and over again. I can see it going down something like this:
First we'll get the rush job for March 2007. Then we'll get the SE version for Christmas 2007 (with the trailers). And, finally, we'll get the UE version for pre-Bond 22 October 2008 (with the outakes).

Pretty shocked by that if this indeed turns out to be the full selection of extras for the CASINO ROYALE DVD. Cannot remember the last time I bought a DVD that did not have at least a commentary attached to it. Very poor indeed.
Well, they could have easily just put out the film on dvd with no extras whatsoever, but didn't, they have given us some decent stuff. I dunno, I'd like to see more stuff on the DVD too, but some people in here are acting like Sony owe them 103 hours of bonus material or something. They COULD have put out the film only on DVD and everyone would have bought it anyway, but they chose to put some extra stuff in, so why not look forward to what we are getting instead of complaining about what we're not.
In regards to the commentary, maybe the filmmakers would rather the film speaks for itself. I'd rather have no commentary than one that is obviously being done out of obligation or for a paycheck (Brosnan on DAD comes to mind).

Because we know better could be done. And has been in the past. And because it's very, very obvious that this is the first of a double-dip plan, which is a way of getting extra money from consumers in a not-totally-genuine, up-front way.
Of course we're not entitled, but knowing (okay, ALMOST knowing) a second edition is to follow is pretty galling. And this is a minimal-effort DVD - all the extras are pre-existing. Now for some DVDs, there simply isn't the budget for such things, and you use what you have. But this particular film, right now, off the back of this particular franchise? Sales are as guaranteed as they can be. The money IS there.
And will be again, annoyingly, for the second, winter edition. As another poister mentioned, at least LOTR admitted their plans up-front to offer people the choice.
In regards to the commentary, maybe the filmmakers would rather the film speaks for itself. I'd rather have no commentary than one that is obviously being done out of obligation or for a paycheck (Brosnan on DAD comes to mind).
But it's Martin Campbell - he almost always does commentary on his films, alongside his DP. And they make for a great, interesting pair. Even on average films like the second Zorro, the commentary itself is pretty damn good.
But then, as I say, it's clearly part of a long-term strategy and I guess I should just hold off for the second edition. I just don't think I have the willpower!

I guess they figured we'd forget what a nice package they put out for a much inferior Bond movie last time - and that was with the FIRST DVD release of DAD!
So now they figure they can get us all with the stripped down release, get us again in 9 months or a year with the upgraded SE, and then finally on the HD/Blu-Ray UE version a year from now.
I mean, they could have easily gotten a documentary covering the history of Casino Royale together before the movie came out. Adding the original Climax TV version would have been easy. Minimal additional effort would have made for a much more satisfying DVD release.
But then they would have a hard time selling the upgraded version later....

I'll bet it's re-released either in 2008 alongside the release of Bond 22 in theaters or in 2009 alongside the release of Bond 22 on DVD (which will likely have crappy features too).
I already have Bond Girls Are Forever so this sucks even more. Just a commentary would have been nice.

This is the most disappointing DVD package in years...
(Man, why couldn't Warner Brothers have upped their bid for MGM??)

The only thing I miss is a look at the deleted material.
I dunno. I normally don't bother to listen to commentaries (even on Bond DVDs), but I'd been looking forward to those for CASINO ROYALE, a film that I believe merits several. I'd love to hear the likes of Stuart Baird, Broccoli and Wilson, Campbell, Craig, Haggis and Purvis and Wade sounding off at length about CR, as well as a commentary by a "Bond expert" like John Cork. Actually, given that he's not only a Bond expert, but that he also wrote a stage adaptation of CR, I think Raymond Benson would be a perfect choice for a commentary.

Would this have all been different if Sony wasn't involved?

No audio commentary? That's disappointing.
Extremely. I was expecting alot more on this DVD.

I don't really mind the lack of special features, because when the Ultimate Edition comes out, I'll probably be getting it on blu-ray. Since I'll have to update to the new format anyway, I'd rather be getting something extra other than better quality. And yes, I know blu-ray players also play DVDs, but once I buy a blu-ray player I'll feel compelled to get Casino Royale on blu-ray.

I much prefer making-of documentaries, and even those I could do without, given that I only watch them once or twice, at most. Plus, like Gravity's Silhouette pointed out, they won't be frank with us for another twenty or so years, so what we'd get we already know or wouldn't be interesting.
I do like deleted/extended scenes, but unless they offered the option of an extended/director's cut, I don't really mind all that much.
What does bother me is the absence of trailers and TV spots, even if I rarely watch them. It just shows a complete lack of effort on their part to not include something that requires zero work to add to a DVD.
As long as the audio/video quality of the film is top-notch, though, I'll pick it up, and won't bother getting the "upgrade" for at least two years, probably more.

didn't Sony's other big franchise, Spiderman, have really great DVD's on first release?
I have both of those DVDs, and they definitely had a hell of a lot more special features than this does.

Yep, I'm going on a boycott. Not because of someone's hair colour or appearance, but because Sony is trying to rip off the true fans of the series. The same fans that went to the cinema to see CR 6 times. Sorry, no dice Sony. Get back to me when you have a proper release of CR on the table. The release the fans and the film itself deserves.
