Letterman was a jerk. He basically made fun of Craig in the dialogue and had him as the second guest after some old lady from a documentary that no one heard of. He spent more time talking about Paul Newman and Tom Hanks in Road To Perdition than he did about CR. I really think it was a mistake not putting him on Leno, who would of treated Daniel Craig much better and it would of been a much more memorable interview, IMO.

You realize they do pre-show interviews right? Nothing in that interview was a surprise to Craig. In fact, he probably told Letterman it was ok to discuss "Road to Perdition" Letterman probably would have told him about the Bond pictures, and the Trebek joke. All this stuff is planned out to the T, there are no surprises (there are a few exceptions though).

frankly I'm not so sure about the young generation.... I went to see Borat in the biggest theatre in the city (a really big auditorium) which was completely sold out.. full of young people... the Bond trailer came on... HUGE backlash after..... I mean honestly... it was total disregard... I get the feeling that they liked the old DAD style formula

Can you be more specific on the backlash?

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling. Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes, volcanoes. The dead rising from the grave. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria.

I probably overreacted, but I think Leno would of went out of his way to make a more memorable and interesting interview.

Craig was just on.

He was awesome; wearing a fancy three piece tan jacket with a blue (or black) tie... with him wearing a pair of jeans under that. lol. but he didn't say anything really new about the film... but Letterman did show us a new clip!

Craig is making out with Vesper next to his/her hotel room door and 2 of Le Chiffre's henchmen walk out of a room and start walking opposite Bond down the hall, but it appears Bond has something in his ear and it makes a little buzzing noise (I have no clue what it was) and then one of Le Chiffre's henchmen turn aroung and shoot Bond but Bond ducks away with Vesper just in time and they go to the stairway and hide behind the door. Then Le Chiffre's men come busting in and Craig kicks one of them over the rail and takes the other one on with his gun or something. The camera angle was pretty far away so I couldn't really tell. And so Bond and the other henchmen are tumbling down the stairs fighting and soon enough Bond takes off his dinner jacket and they continue fighting with Vesper trying to run down the staris... until the henchmen grabs Vesper's leg making her fall but Bond tackles him just in time and it ended there.

Great scene! I'm guessing this is...

Spoiler

I recorded this interview... but I have no clue on how to get it on YouTube or anything like that.

Well, Dave used to be a lot worse, he's actually mellowed in his old age. Ten years ago he probably wouldnt have let Craig get in a word at all.

I too think Letterman was a jerk, perhaps even more so than usual. The questions about "Perdition" were lame and took up too much time. And the monkeys......? I suspect that Daniel was none too pleased, though he remained cool and collected.

A wasted opportunity. Though it was fun to see yet another clip!

I was just really disappointed that Dave made a bigger deal about some old lady in a documentary about a painting than having the new James Bond on his show.

Nice clip...but yeah crappy interview, and that had nothing to do with Craig. It just reminded me of why I don't watch Letterman. He's an idiot!

I enjoyed the Omega commercial more than Letterman!

I really hope Daniel ends up on Leno........

Lettreman isnt a Bond fan like we all are. You can't expect everyone to get giddy with excitement like we do.

But still, I think his viewers would be more interested in the latest James Bond movie than a documentary about some guy staring at a painting for two hours.

Well he didn't have to be giddy, but the fact is that James Bond is a cultural icon, and the introduction of a new actor in the role is at least something of an event. Perhaps more so than some lady with with a painting, anyway.

I wonder how many minutes of CR we have seen if you add up the trailers, the clips, music videos, etc.? Perhaps someone will stitch it all together on YouTube sometime. It would be fairly lengthy, I think.

The same thing happen with Brandon Routh when he was promoting Superman Returns. He was the second guest as well like Craig. They were extremly similar interviews. Dave wastes time talking about pointless crap and then they only have enough time to show a 30 second clip. Bond and Superman should appear on Jay Leno next time, they'll get two segments there.

I can see why Letterman consistently trails Leno in the ratings. The Craig interview was a blown opportunity by Dave.

Yeah, this was a bad interview, mainly because Letterman seemed totally uninterested and had Craig talk about how it was working with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman in "Road to Perdition" for half the damn interview.

Exactly, I think some people are making a big deal out of nothing. Craig was a bit nervous on the show, so Letterman was helping him along. That's what these hosts do.

I've been to the filming of a few shows over the years, and they have a person with a really happy upbeat personality instructing the crowd to cheer as loud as they can and stuff like that, so that to the viewers at home it seems like everyones so excited about the guest and the show.

Despite that the crowd was still very laid-back and didn't seem all that excited about Daniel Craig or Casino Royale.

I'm certainly not claiming that they were booing or hissing, but they certainly weren't that excited either.

Agreed about the audience reaction, but i blame much of that on Letterman himself, who sort of tossed a wet blanket on the proceedings........

Last time Brosnan was on Leno he didn't get much enthusiasm from the crowd so I don't think a talk-show crowd's reaction should be an indicator of an actor or upcoming films popularity.

They weren't that excited because Letterman lead Craig through a dull interview, acted like his biggest role was that part in Road to Perdition and essentially made him look like a nobody. I think he only asked him one question about Bond.

Compare this one to the Matt Lauer interview on Monday.

Plus when Craig walked out, the band played the CR theme from 1967. They probably didn't want to pay the royalty on the James Bond theme. The Connery pic Letterman showed was from NSNA, not any of the Eon Bonds. At least Letterman didn't ask about the negative-Craig publicity (he probably didn't even know about it. If the interview had gone better and Dave showed a bit more interest in Bond, maybe the Lancelat Link Secret Chimp spot (at least it looked a bit like L Link) might have been funnier.

Leno would of went all out and made Craig the center of the show but Lettermen treated Craig like he was starring in some second rate, made for T.V. movie.

We all know what you're claiming. Your views on Craig and CR are very evident around these parts. My question is why did you wait till you had something negative to say to make your return here?

Yeah, Routh got similarly treated in that he was the second guest, behind that noted cultural icon Nicole Richie. Cough.

Oh God, so Letterman is STILL doing the 'show a joke clip instead of the real one' bit? Good grief. I dunno if I'll bother staying up to watch it...no, I'm a sucka. :)

Daniel did seem nervous. That answers a question I posed yesterday about when he would begin to have butterflies in his stomach regarding the opening of CR.

I too noticed that the picture that Dave showed of Connery was that of an old Sean Connery from NSNA. The most Bondian picture Letterman showed was of Roger Moore in a tux.

Well CBS certainly agrees...in last night's promo, they said "Dave's got new James Bond Daniel Craig!". They didn't say anything about a painting :)

Still, Dan likes his art, so he probably enjoyed it.

The evening promos said Letterman has the new James Bond. Nothing else in the promo spot. So what do they do, put him on as the second guest. But, it was nice to see the CR/Omega watch ad during the commercial break after Craig's spot.

Craig made a good appearance, he seemed relaxed and looked well.

Letterman was a bit dull, making the interview sorta boring.

I thought there was an interesting ceremonious bit when they showed all the previous Bonds and they all got a good round of applause (except Lazenby) - which was unfortunate.

I did hear Craig kinda hum an appreciative "uh huh" when they showed Dalton's pic, which was cool...he didn't otherwise comment on his predecessors.

I was hoping Craig was going to be on The Tonight Show as well, but Regis, Letterman, and the Today show aren't a bad start...

NOTE: Late night and the Tonight Show always compete for guests (we all know Leno and Letterman are rivals) and won't have the same guest on within a two week period. Keep this in mind, as Craig may be on in December...
