I'm (bloody) surprised about the issue of just 11 years of age difference being brought up here.

Would this not signify the closest age gap between Bond actor and girl for, like, ever!!!!!!!!!?

(and don't bring Connery and Blackman up for argument's sake - I know, I know)

Great choice. If you can you should try and check out the Aussie flic The Goddess of 1967, which Rose Byrne won best actress at the Venice Film Festival for. It's a wonderful film.

I have to say, she is very fine, just check out Troy to 'see' her. I do want to check out Wicker Park now, too. IF this IS true, it is a great cast, she is known, but not too well known, and will not overshadow Craig as 007. Now onto the villain(s)!

Carole Bouquet was 30 years Rog's junior. Don't see much kvetching about that.

Or Rigg and Lazenby!

Just kidding. Well, not really

Wow, zencat, nice find, and yes she does bear a resemblance to Vesper on the cover, which was one of my requirments

[quote name='zencat' date='15 January 2006 - 17:56']Does anyone else find it amusing that she (reportedly) had to use a password to get into her audition. Get over yourselves, Eon. This is movie, not the Manhattan Project.

I'm very happy with the choice. Stirling was my first choice but Byrne was a close second. I think I may have mentioned her awhile ago.

She has the perfect classical beauty that Vesper needs.

Pretty much agree with the general consensus- beautiful, classic, has the right look, something secretive and melancholy about her eyes. Glad to hear that said screen test scene was in there- in the book it was all played out in Bond's mind, but I pretty much expected that if it were kept it'd be have to be articulated. Which it apparently is  Hope they keep some of the monologues, like Le Chiffre's to Bond and Bond's to Mathis on the nature of evil (I can dream, can't I?)

Well if it is this Rose Burn (who I'm not too familiar with, even though I've seen Troy), then I have to say that she definitely does look like my idea of how Vesper should look. She has a dark, continental/European look which is precisely what I wanted.

Great Choice if she is the one! Also, I think that it is great that there arent many big name actors in this flick (Craig included). It will be like the first time I saw the Connery Bond movies and didnt have a clue who any of the actors were. It was fresh to see people as one character instead of many. If Catherine Zeta Jones had been cast for instance, I would be waiting for her to pull out the sword and for Craig to come in with a mask on!

Seriously though, I think this will work nicely.

Funnily enough I have not seen Troy or Wicker Park, but as they are both showing on Sky in the UK at the moment, I soon will. What I have seen are Byrne's British roles. She was in the BBC's recent Casanova series and also the film I Capture The Castle (ironically also starring Henry Cavill). I can report that her English accent is excellent, so there is no need to worry about her Aussie background.

If her casting is true, its the first thing I've heard about Casino Royale that's made me feel really positive. I agree with a lot of the points that have been made about her. She is an experienced film actress, but does not have a level of fame that will overshadow Craig. (Come to think of it, at 5'6" she has a height that won't overshadow him either!) She also has a beauty that IMO suggests the right aura of vulnerability. Interestingly, her name has cropped up quite frequently on this site and others. Does EON peruse these boards after all?

My commiserations to Rachael Stirling, if indeed she has failed to secure a role this time. She has a talent that will serve her well in the future. I've waited a long time to use these smilies in conjunction with CR, but here we go-

I applaud the selection of Rose Byrne. Excellent choice. Rachael Stirling would have been a good choice as well, but I agree that Byrne will be able to deliver the sort of haunted melancholy which Vesper requires, IMHO.

Regardless of her date of birth, Byrne just looks incredibly young. She's one of those actresses who could quite convincingly play a high school student like twentysomethings Kristen Bell in Veronica Mars or Rachel McAdams in Mean girls. I think when you stick her next to Daniel Craig it'll make her even younger looking, and I don't get that impression from Sterling or Farmiga. Still, we'll see, eh?

Byrne doesn't look THAT young, dinovelvet (she's hardly high school student material, especially if you see her on screen). I had no problem with her relationship with Brad Pitt in TROY, and Pitt is older than Craig by a number of years. She and Craig will be fine, age-wise.

This would be the first GOOD casting EON has done for Casino Royale. Now if they find a GOOD Bond we're in business.

Whatever. Craig is the best bit of casting they could have done thus far, and I safely say that having seen his work in MUNICH (which convinced me 100% that this man should be Bond, and that he's easily the outright coolest person to have played the role since Connery).

Wasn't the Mail the first paper to report it was Craig?

View Post

Yes, I think so. As well as the first paper to report that Brosnan had been dropped.

Also, Stax has started a thread asking "What do you think of Rose Byrne as Vesper?". Hmmm....

View Post

I think we have our Vesper.

View Post

I'm gonna agree with you here, Zencat. Usually I wouldn't say until it's confirmed, but the fact that not only is Rose hot she's an extremely good actress too and I think that's really what the producers would be looking for. Let's hope The Daily Mail is correct.:D

Rose Byrne was not on my original wish list for Vesper Lynd but I can live with her. I liked her for the part a little bit more than Rachael Sterling of the final four candidates. She is good looking with a classical look to her. I saw her in Troy which showed that she can definitely do drama, but have not seen Wicker Park. However, in the ads for the latter film, I thought she looked the best in that. I guess I will have to rent Wicker Park now. Overall, I think she is a solid choice and should make for an interesting Vesper.

At the moment, the best thing I find about Casino Royale is the casting of the characters--all the way from Daniel Craig to Simon Abkarian--and casting Rose Byrne does nothing to lessen that sentiment.

Very pretty.

With this and the other casting information to date, seems to be a return to the "fairly obscure character actor" (halcyon) days of Adolfo Celi rather than the "whoever we saw on British television last night" blight that affected the Brosnans.

Do you not think that they might have watched Casanova in the hope of finding a pretty girl?
