I think you mean "before moving to London".

i just don't see Craig as one person pointed out capturing the public. it will be Dalton all over again. he doesn't have the appeal...outside of Bond fanatics (who aren't the majority of people seeing these movies anymore), i find it hard to believe that anyone even knows Craig.
my choice would've been Clive Owen at least...but Craig??
i guess we all shall see but i can't right now see how this will work for future films beyond Royale..and on top of it all he's not dying his hair??
a blonde James??? come on...that's not right.

It would be fantastic if it was "Dalton all over again". Of course, after LTK was a long break, but this wasn't caused only by the poor BO-success and imo TLD and LTK are brilliant movies.
And what is the problem with his blonde hair.

It's much more important that the story is good, the villain is played well, there's no CGI-crap etc. - at least to me.

@Athena,
nice to see ya again! (well read ya lol)
but yeah i'll have to see this film unfold to be sold on it...a blue eyed, blonde Bond...doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I'm not going to say that Casino Royal won't be a good Bond film as I do think it will be good... I'm just not on cloud nine at the moment.
Hey... Did anyone else notice that this topic's forum number is 26007 ?

I guess the release schedule will be Casino Royale in 2006, Bond 22 in 2007 and Bond 23 in 2009.

Normally new Bond announcements excite me, but this one has me feeling numb.
The picture with the silencer gives me a little more hope.
But Craig did seem nervous as heck, and being scared [censored]less because of a BOAT RIDE?
Chewing gum during the interview?
Not dyeing his hair?
His voice is good, that is about the only thing I can at this point that is positive.

Just a small nitpick about the main-page story; it says Craig "grew up in Liverpool before moving to England"
I think you mean "before moving to London".
Yes, and I'm really not certain the HMS President location was right either- they were at a Naval training facility, and they certainly weren't aboard a boat.

Well, I'm excited! Anyone have any idea who made the suit Craig was wearing? What type of watch he was wearing? Who made the tux he is wearing in the promo shot? You, know all the important details ....
One of the journos did ask if it was significant that he was wearing Brioni and not Saville Row and Craig replied- 'it's a great suit!'. Is that important? Who knows..

While I understand that, if he is to be truly successful, a Bond actor must to some extent "be Bond offscreen", surely the main thing is his performance in the films? And I have absolutely no doubt whatsoever that Craig's performance in CASINO ROYALE - whether commercially appealing or not, whether "Fleming's Bond" or not, and whether chiming with the personal tastes of an individual Bond fan or not - will be an absolutely splendid showcase of the actor's craft.
I would agree that Craig seemed nervous and rather less than in his element when handling the media, but wasn't the same true of Dalton at the press conference for THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS? And look at how well TLD turned out. The lineup of talent on CR (Campbell, presumably determined to surpass his work on GOLDENEYE, Haggis, etc.) and the return to a Fleming story.... could we ask for more? Did we ever imagine we'd get this much at the time of DIE ANOTHER DAY? CR promises to be easily the best Bond flick since TLD, and possibly the best since ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE.
As for the press conference.... frankly, I thought the speedboat entrance was ill-advised, and seems to have come in for quite a bit of mockery in the British media already ("James Bond wearing a life jacket? Ha ha ha! Frightened by a boat ride!"). Presumably, Craig did not conceive this spectacle - some PR people did.
From what I've seen of the conference, the journalists were not friendly. As I've pointed out, the question about Miller and Moss was really shabby, IMO, and an inexcusable way to start the proceedings. It seems that there's been quite a bit of tabloid muckraking about Craig's love life of late, and it may be that there's little love lost between him and the media.
None of this will have any bearing on what he brings to the role of Bond in his performance in CR. I am confident that, whatever else we may have to "worry" about in relation to Craig as the new Bond, we can rest assured that his performance as 007 will be superb. And thank goodness for that, because name me a candidate other than Owen you could say that about.

Brioni... well, maybe it will still be okay.
Seriously, I am very excited. But, Craig may have polish is "endorsing" skills if he wants to really cash in on this opportunity.

And what is the problem with his blonde hair.Moore didn't have dark hair either. Things change. You don't blame Connery for being not thin enough in DAF do you ?
It's much more important that the story is good, the villain is played well, there's no CGI-crap etc. - at least to me.
you're right..story does matter...heck it matters a LOT but the person carrying the story is just as important. and him being blonde is more than a comparison to Connery being overweight LOL i mean come on..Moore didn't have dark hair but he wasn't blonde and blue eyed either.
i think it's a bad casting call...that would harm a well written/produced movie in my opinion...i mean you watch the general public..not the Bond public..but the general public who will be sought to take in Craig...he's not a household name so to speak. not that Bond needs one but still you get the picture....
a long road is ahead for this movie and for Craig to wow the fans for this film.
Well, as far as I remember, Moore had blue eyes - but not as light as Craig's. Of course, Craig is the inheritor of Brosnan and this is a high burden as Brosnan was the audience's darling.
The producers wanted a break, which is always a high risk. They wanted to change something. We cannot believe the Brosnan-Bond-style will run until the end of the world. If they don't change something, Bond will die - sooner or later.
After 4 highly successful movies, I drool over a classic, gritty Bond. For me, it's much more important we get a "high-quality"-Bond than one which appeals the general audience.
Nevertheless, you are right if you say it will be a hard and long way for the producers and Craig to attract the general public.
I'm thrilled to hear that the Bond 22 script is being written. I'm hoping that means it will be released in 2007.
I guess the release schedule will be Casino Royale in 2006, Bond 22 in 2007 and Bond 23 in 2009.
Thought of this too. It would be a very full schedule, but it might be possible. The producers won't get another chance for 2 007, but if we are realistic: 2 movies within 1 year - this is highly improbable.

I know what you mean. But, there are legions of "great actors" out there, who routinely give "superb" performances. The trick with Bond casting, is you have to convince the audience that you're not only a B-a-a-d Dude, but you're also the coolest, stylish, most sexually attractive man in the frame. With a wit to boot. All that is part of the perfomance. And it considerably skews the criteria for "superbness".
Hence the significant polarity in the reception to Craig right now. They're some major shoes to fill. It's a tougher fit, IMO, than it's often portrayed to be.
I think Craig can pull it off. But he's got a hill to climb.
