Fans of Catwoman will be happy to know that Selina Kyle gets a name check, setting her up for an appearance in BB3.

Excellent. In my personal opinion, Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman was by far the best villain of the original four films and is the hardest act to follow.

I quite agree, but it's also the easiest to reinvent, seeing as Burton's Catwoman wasn't much like the character of the comics. I'm pulling for Eva Green as Selina Kyle.

Oooh...interesting choice. I never would have thought of her for the role, but she could make the character come alive. I still have trouble really choosing someone other than Pfeiffer.

I think she'd be right. She has the perfect air of mystery and sensuality to make the part work.

I still have trouble really choosing someone other than Pfeiffer.

If you were more acquainted with the comic book character, I imagine that wouldn't be a problem. Pfeifer was great because of the insanity and tragedy she brought to the role, but neither aspects are part of the comic book character.

Indeed, the buzz within the fanboy community went way up with this.

Were they ever not going to see it?

It's been bothering me for a clutch of moments, but I know now what that reminds me of; that bit in The Silence of the Lambs just after Hannibal Lecter has chewed bits off the policeman (Pembrey?) - there's a similar look.

Are we sure that's lipstick?

Are we sure that's lipstick?

Considering it's drawn in a near perfect clown smile (with dots on the end, no less) to cover the scars, I'd say, yeah, we're pretty sure.

Sorry, Gala, but it's been reported that Harleen Quinzel makes no appearance whatstoever in THE DARK KNIGHT's script.

Bugger. I would've been happy with a very small cameo, at least.

Really? Hadn't heard of that. Nice.

This marketing campaign is genius, I think. I like what they've done so far with Joker's reveal, but I can't wait to see how they further develop Dent's. Pins? Campaign posters plastered on walls in main cities (which, along with the Joker cards, would be fantastic collector's items)? Billboards? The possibilities are endless. Might just be my imagination, but I think they did a similar thing in '89 with the original Batman (featuring Billy Dee Williams' criminally underused version of Dent), as well.

And for anyone who's bothered, here's the new logo for TDK (apparently):

Love that. Reminds me, ironically enough, of the Batman logo on the second Batman film from the original four, Batman Returns:

I think Gina Gershon looks a bit like CW....Marcia Cross could've been Poison Ivy in the 90s imo.

Thanks for posting those. Those debuted last night... People wanting to know what's up with as far as those pictures go and the scene...

Spoiler

But this is all related to IMAX. That sequence is one of four shot in the IMAX format. There's an article here, from the Hollywood Reporter. Here's the relevant bits:

Director Christopher Nolan has made an inventive decision to film four sequences of "The Dark Knight" with Imax cameras. The next installment of Warner Bros. Pictures' Batman franchise, which again will star Christian Bale as Batman/Bruce Wayne, is scheduled for a July 18, 2008, day-and-date theatrical release with Imax theaters.

Although it is not unusual for 35mm-lensed features to be remastered to screen in Imax theaters, "Dark Knight" is the first major feature to be even partially shot using Imax cameras. These sequences will be combined with the rest of the film -- lensed in 35mm -- to produce the final product.

What the use of Imax technology in the production means for audiences in Imax theaters is that when the select scenes are shown, the aspect ratio will morph to the larger size, expanding the image to fill the entire screen. In traditional theaters, the goal is that the Imax-lensed sequences "would jump off screens ... and give patrons an experience they haven't seen in 35mm presentations," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution.

Following many months of testing, the first of the Imax-lensed scenes, including a prologue that introduces the Joker (Heath Ledger), was shot in Chicago last month, several weeks in advance of the actual start of principal photography. Additional scenes will be filmed with Imax cameras during the course of production.

Nolan said, "In continuing the story of such a great icon, I'm thrilled to be able to expand the scope of the film, not just in terms of its story, but in giving Batman and the Joker the largest possible canvas on which to face off. No existing technology compares with the Imax format in terms of its ability to throw the audience into the action, and we're very proud and excited to use this technology in a way that no one has before."

Just out of curiosity (because I know absolutely nothing about the IMAX format in relation to a regular film format, other than the IMAX screen is significantly larger), does the fact that these four scenes are being shot in IMAX format mean that they will not be in the regular theatrical release of the film?

No. IMAX format is huge, so that it fills the IMAX screen. So that's the main difference in the format - it's not at the standard aspect ratio of a theatrical release, and allows for a lot more detail. If you had read the article I posted you would have come across this passage:

What the use of Imax technology in the production means for audiences in Imax theaters is that when the select scenes are shown, the aspect ratio will morph to the larger size, expanding the image to fill the entire screen. In traditional theaters, the goal is that the Imax-lensed sequences "would jump off screens ... and give patrons an experience they haven't seen in 35mm presentations," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution.

So the scenes will be in the theatrical release, just not at the huge aspect ratio that IMAX film has. But they will maintain the detail and vibrancy that the huge film allows... so we'll see how that works. The article explains that Nolan spent a lot of time experimenting with this effect.

The pictures are very cool. Not over the top but enough to intrigue me. Bummer the movie is still over a year from hitting the theaters. I really like checking out movies in IMAX so I'm very interested to see the scenes they are filming specifically in the IMAX format.

It's great, because it's realistic. The real Batman would never go out in the open with an helmet / mask that prevents him from turning his head to see what's going on beside him. This new costume let's him do that. I like it !
