NEW UPDATE - TITLE OF SEQUEL ANNOUNCED, LEDGER OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED

Well, Batman-on-film reports this, with the message "take it to the bank":

WB has confirmed to BOF that Ledger has indeed been cast as The Joker in the next Bat-film -- THE DARK KNIGHT.

Works for me. Never expected Ledger as the Joker, but it makes me all the more eager now to see his performance.

Here's hoping for Hoffman as the Penguin.

Of course, I imagine that the number one rumour in Batman fandom will now be that the title is bound to be changed to BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT, or to something else including the word "Batman".

Well, honestly, I hope it doesn't become BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT. I just like THE DARK KNIGHT, and people will get the idea when advertising starts anyhow. The site BATMAN-ON-FILM indicated that the title would remain just THE DARK KNIGHT and nothing more. So I suspect it will have something like "The Highly Anticipated Sequel to BATMAN BEGINS" attached to it in trailers and maybe even posters.

I personally want Bob Hoskins as the Penguin.

I hope it just stays as The Dark Night. Movie titles seem to be so longer and longer lately.

The Dark Knight? It's okay but I'm used to Batman titles having Batman in the title.

Batman&Robin had Batman in the title, but what a crappy title(suited the film).
THE DARK KNIGHT is a cool title, snitched from Frank Miller.I hope they will use some of his maerial as well. Does anyone know?

I've just realised that THE DARK KNIGHT (scheduled for June 2008) will hit screens just days after BOND 22. Curious that BOND BEGINS 2 and BATMAN BEGINS 2 will appear at roughly the same time. Presumably, Sony/Eon and Warners/Nolan will be keeping a very keen eye on each other's affairs in the coming months....

(Note that Nolan has gone on record as saying that he approached BATMAN BEGINS as though he were making a Bond film, and that CASINO ROYALE may not have happened had it not been for BATMAN BEGINS*. It would appear that there's something of a mutual appreciation society/mutual influencing thing going on between the Batman and Bond franchises.)

*Well, may not have happened in quite the same way, at least.

A LOT has been happening in the past few days.

First, WB launched the official site:
http://thedarkknight.warnerbros.com/

Then WB launched this site, with our first glimpse of Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent:

The WB launched this site... the Joker's defacing of Dent's campaign poster, slowly revealing a picture of the Joker's face:

Wow. Just wow. The marketing for THE DARK KNIGHT has begun! My thoughts? Well, this internet campaign is great... apparently WB has plans for an entire website for Harvey Dent's campaign, and possibly a whole Joker website. Wonderful.

And that Joker picture... well, Nolan's Joker is one creepy sonofagun, and if it's any indication of the tone of THE DARK KNIGHT, we're looking at one dark film. I'm surprised WB let him get away with something so non-kid friendly.

It seems Warner Bros. even launched a campaign with Joker cards in comic book shops featuring the scrawled writing, "I believe in Harvey Dent too! HAHAHA!"

I wonder if this will get a similar reaction from parent's groups and the like that "Batman Returns" got.

Knowing the Joker, he probably killed his mum and then took the make-up bag. :cooltongue:

Probably not, because BATMAN BEGINS wasn't exactly the most kid-friendly Batflick. In fact, it seems kids weren't particularly interested in it (toys didn't sell at all). So I'd expect that THE DARK KNIGHT will be fine so long as it's kept PG-13.

The site just shut down. Now it reads "Page Not Found" - but if you highlight around the page, it's filled with HAHAHAHAs. And in between the HAs are other letters, spelling out the message, "See you in December."

Crazy.

Yeah, and it turns up that seeyouindecember.com is owned by a company that specializes in these kind of internet promotional mind-games (they did a campaign for HALO 2). So I expect there's something very special coming up.

Furthermore, the message "See you in December" was also found on an April Fool's fake script page presumably released by Nolan and co (it was found on official site). So it seems this whole campaign has been in the works for quite some time.

They definitely seem to be on top of things. :cooltongue: Really, really looking forward to this one (although I'd likely say that about anything Nolan was involved with).

I hope Nolan gets the chance to make Bond 24 or 25 when he is done with Batman. He is a Brit so Babs and Michael would approve. And the fanboys too will approve.

It will build on Begins' dark and complex Batman. That IS Batman, and he is at last being given the respect he deserves. Heath Ledger as the Joker is genius, and the image looks awesome.

I can not wait for The DARK Knight. They indeed have put the Dark back into Batman.

There was actually a rumor floating around a few weeks ago that Sarah Michelle Geller was up for a role in DK and it was Quinn. I have know idea if it was ever confirmed, but maybe it will help keep your hope alive.

Sorry, Gala, but it's been reported that Harleen Quinzel makes no appearance whatstoever in THE DARK KNIGHT's script. Fans of Catwoman will be happy to know that Selina Kyle gets a name check, setting her up for an appearance in BB3.

Indeed, the buzz within the fanboy community went way up with this.
