Unless Nolan is prepared to leave the series on such an awkward final note, I'm pretty sure there will be a third.

The problem I see with the third one is that it will be very difficult to top TDK it seems. It will also be very difficult to find a villain that will top The Joker and force Gotham to turn back to Batman. We'll see; words don't convey the amount of trust that I have in Nolan and crew so I'm sure they'll figure something out but I don't know, finding a villain with that amount of menace will be tough.

I suppose if all things go well for a third film that it will be a bit doubtful that Nolan and company return for a fourth, which is a shame because I would like to see them tackle a story with an established, well trusted Batman as the third film will probably still have Batman on the outs with the police and public.

It's been confirmed by multiple reliable sources that have seen the film already. I wasn't too happy about it originally but apparently it's handled quite well and if that's the case then I don't mind.

I also really like when Fox's line "At what cost?" in reply to Wayne's "I've seen now what I have to become to stop men like him." Even if that's not from the same scene and it's edited like that for the trailer, it perfectly conveys one of the themes of the film.

Two-Face is anywhere near as interesting after his origin arc as he is before it. After his origin, Two-Face plateaus, since the origin adequately addresses pretty much everything about the character. I was always apathetic about him driving a third film for precisely that reason. What can you do with Two-Face in a third film? Not a whole lot, besides retreading elements that were already in the original arc to begin with.

In THE DARK KNIGHT, we get the full Harvey Dent/Two-Face arc (the whole film is actually about Harvey Dent - the Joker is secondary), and one hell of a dramatic conclusion that, if it's done as well as reviews describe, ensures that Harvey Dent/Two Face is going to leave a lasting effect on the audience, moreso than he would if he were left alive.

I think it's a testament to how well Nolan utilizes Dent that most of the reviews heap praise onto the arc, and especially the conclusion. The folks who are disappointed are the folks who haven't seen the film yet.

I don't like it. I'm not even convinced this even happens. I think it will, but Dent won't die. Why must they feel the urge to kill off major villains all the time? It never, ever happens in the comics. You can have all that tragic stuff AND still have him live. Just have it that the major characters think he's dead, but the audience is given a hint he survived. That's what someone who saw the film told me how it's done. They said exactly this:

My friend, this guy has not seen the film (or was not paying attention during the end). To me, it sounds like they've just taken their information from a somewhat right, somewhat misguided plot summary that was posted online months ago which suggested this exact same thing, using the same wording. But we now know how it goes down in the film itself. It's been widely confirmed that there is, in fact,

I honestly believe that it was Nolan's intent to have the Joker carry over from THE DARK KNIGHT, but the likelihood of that happening now is uncertain.

And I doubt we'd see the Riddler as a major foe. Oldman dropped his name, but I think he was joking. The problem with the Riddler is that his mind games are far too similar to what the Joker puts Batman through in THE DARK KNIGHT. Maybe as a minor figure.

The third film is going to need a different kind of foe. I think the third will probably be comprised of relatively unknown foes, like Bane, Talia al Ghul, David Cain, Hugo Strange, or such as that. Scarecrow might return yet again (he's hardly in THE DARK KNIGHT, after all).

This is at least taking typically-known Batman concepts and turning them on their ear. I do think Batman taking the rap for all of Two Face's crimes to preserve the image of Dent as Gotham's redeemer is quite epically cool.

Tragic how Dent's dead and Gotham will unawarely hold him in high regard as a golden boy, when in fact he ended as a rotten criminal.

Plus, Two Face gets a massive last laugh by spoiling Batman's already shaky reputation. It'll be very hard for Batman to get that back without revealing the true nature of Dent. The man represented hope for the city, and with him dead, I’m betting the stuffing is knocked out of the entire city. Like you said, Dent's death is going to have a lasting affect.

Two Face, who already was a tragic character, has become even more so.

WCreativie advertising only comes in once in a blue moon these days. I look at the old posters of films from decades past and what we have today is so bland in comparsion. THE DARK KNIGHT was an extremetly rare exception.

I'm rather underwhelmed by that poster, but it is the best out of a rather lackluster set of posters for THE DARK KNIGHT. Don't get me wrong, the film is the one that I'm anticipating the most this year, and its marketing campaign (aside from the posters) has been one of the best in recent memory, but none of the posters (aside from the first teaser poster with the "Why So Serious" tagline) have been particularly good.

Indeed. I'm just clutching at straws. However, Locke from Lost survived a fall from EIGHT stories, where as Two Face's is 'only' three. Just kidding, that's a whole different kettle of fish. The Dent death scenario does open up some fresh plot points that have never been tackled before.
