Amen! Such a wonderful moment for Michael Sam and his family! And not only Don Jones, but FORMER RB Derek Ward has been posting some not-so-very-kind tweets in the same manner.. Mr, Ward, at least Michael Sam is now in the league, whereas you are no longer! Just stop!!

Meanwhile, I'm very pleased with how my Broncos did with this year's draft...we addresed all of our key needs, including getting Cody Latimer, WR from Indiana and Bradley Roby CB from Ohio State..Overall, a solid B+ grade for me.

The Broncos have definitely had a solid off-season. I think the Patriots did well addressing their needs on the o-line, but not much else. Brady staying upright is good, but it doesn't matter if he still has no one to throw too. The Packers had another terrific draft as well. They did well to pick up a TE and bolster their linebacking core and secondary. Ha Ha Clinton Dix should help raise the turnover margin and could be a sleeper pick for Defensive ROY.

The Broncos and Patriots have both had solid offseasons on paper, but these types of "all-star" teams, like the ones that they're both assembling, often don't work out.  That said, if there are two organizations that could make it work, it would be the Broncos and Patriots organizations.

As for my Jets, I've got to congratulate John Idzik on one of the worst drafts the Jets have had in a while (and that's saying something).  They have one of the worst receiving corps in the history of this league, yet chose not to address it until the fourth round, when all of the good receivers in what was a deep WR class had been taken off the board.  Nope, couldn't fix a terrible offense, but the already solid defense continues to be bolstered with yet another first round pick going to that side of the ball.

Hoping to do all 32 teams this season! This time I should have the time to do so, and I hope to do it all in a few posts. My goal is to be done the last week of preseason.

Looking forward to your analysis, hcmv.  One thing we all know up front is that this is going to be a HUGE year for the NFL.  Lots of news, changes and general drama will ensue.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who purchased the team back in 1984, is having to step down as he battle Alzheimer's..  In his 30 years of owning the Broncos, we've seen 6 AFC Championships in 16 playoff appearances, 6 Super Bowl appearances including back to back championships in '97 and '98. Perhaps regarded as one of the classiest owners in the league, Broncos nation is going to miss him big time. I'm sure the team will be dedicating this season to "Mr. B" and hopefully we can get back to the big dance and this time come away with a win. Go Broncos!!

Better late than never!

2014 AFC North Division Preview

4. Cleveland Browns

HC: Mike Pettine (1st season)

OC: Kyle Shanahan

DC: Jim O’Neal

Key Free Agent Pickup: S Donte Witner

Key Loss: LB D’Qwell Jackson

Most Hyped Draft Pick: QB Johnny Manziel

Offense: The offense is in limbo waiting for word on WR Josh Gordon and whether or not he will be suspended for the entire season, which IMO will happen. TE Jordan Cameron is a viable option in the passing game, along w/ free agent WR’s Earl Bennett, Miles Austin and Nate Burleson. The line is anchored by LT Joe Thomas & C Alex Mack but this was a line that couldn’t push off defenders, so despite a renewed vow to run the football, I doubt things will change too much. Ben Tate comes in from Houston and will no doubt start at RB, but he’s never been fully healthy, look for rookie Terrance West to play a big role. Brian Hoyer will get the nod to start the season at QB, but all eyes are on Manziel. I think Manziel will fold in the NFL. In college, he was scared of LSU’s defense, and he’ll see 31 defenses like that in the NFL.

Defense: This is the strength of this team. LB Karlos Dansby and S Donte Whitner should pay dividends for the Browns. CB Joe Haden IMO has been a little overrated, but will get help from the team’s 1st overall pick in CB Justin Gilbert. The front 3 needs NT Phil Taylor to step it up: he has a $5.5 million option for 2015. OLB is going to be an issue, former LSU star Barkevious Mingo has the potential to be great, but he didn’t quite live up to the hype and he came in a bit heavy into camp. Paul Kruger who was given a $40 million contract needs to step it up.

Outlook: Things are looking up for the Browns, but this is the same old story told on a different day. The fact is Cleveland has to make better front office decisions, and find some consistency with a head coach. Maybe Pettine is the right guy, maybe not. Still, this is a storied franchise (in name only) but still, Cleveland finishes 4-12.

3. Baltimore Ravens

HC: John Harbaugh

OC: Gary Kubiak

DC: Dean Pees

Key Free Agent Pickup: WR Steve Smith

Key Loss: T Michael Oher

Most Hyped Draft Pick: LB CJ Mosely

Offense: IMO whenever you give a player a huge contract they fold it in. QB Joe Flacco did exactly that a year ago. Expect new OC Kubiak to get him to change some of his bad habits. The line is going to be the biggest concern, gone is LT Michael Oher, Eugene Monroe takes his place, and he did play well. There’s a new C in Jeremy Zuttah. The right side is good with RG Marshall Yanda. RT and LG however are concerns. The WR’s get a lift with Steve Smith, but how good can he still be? Torrey Smith is effective, as is TE Dennis Pitta. RB Ray Rice has had off field incidents take his focus away from football, so he came in a little heavy into camp, but expect Bernard Pierce and rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro to shoulder the load.

Defense: Once the best in all of football, it really doesn’t look the same. The front 3 will be intriguing as DE Timmy Jurnigan looks to make an impact as a rookie. At NT Haloti Ngata & Terreance Cody are good, rare to have that size and depth at the postion. Chris Canty and rookie Berent Urban will square off for the other DE spot. OLB Terrell Suggs is still good, and will be helped by Courtney Upshaw and Elvis Dumerville on the other side. Rookie CJ Mosely has some shoes to fill taking the ILB spot, but the olther ILB Daryl Smith could be a Pro Bowler soon. The secondary is a huge issue. Rookie Terrance Brooks looks to be the starter at FS, while Matt Elam gets the early nod at SS. CB Lardarius Webb is coming off a knee injury, while Jimmy Smith on the other side is the best player on this group.

Outlook: When you are the defending champs, you get everyone’s best shot in all 16 games. The Ravens went 8-8, btu I think there is some improvement, but not by much. I still doubt the team looking at them on paper, but they have a stable front office that makes good decisions. 9-7 is an improvement, but this is team that can make 11 or 12 wins as the talent is there.

2. Cincinnati Bengals

HC: Marvin Lewis

OC: Hue Jackson

DC: Paul Gunther

Key Free Agent Addition: S Danieal Manning

Key Loss: T Anthony Collins

Most Hyped Draft Pick: RB Jeremy Hill

Offense: Andy Dalton just got a huge contract for going 0-3 in the playoffs. Still, he is a decent QB, and he has guided a team that has won 9,10, 11 games the last 3 seasons. He will be backed up by Jason Campbell so if he does go down, at least there is a reliable player to relieve him. WR AJ Green is one of the best players in the league at that position, but needs to work on catching the ball better, he’s had some cases of the drops at the worst time. TE Jermaine Gresham is a reliable target in the middle of the field. Aside from LT Andrew Whitworth, the line looks largely inconsistent, mostly due to free agency losses and injury. Rookie Jeremy Hill should be the RB to start at the end of the season, so look for Benjarvis Green-Ellis to be let go at some point, but right now Giovani Bernard is the starter.

Defense: The front 4 is not overly impressive, but this is a good team unit. DT Geno Atkins is the best lineman and he is coming off an injury, DE Carlos Dunlap is better when Atkins is at full strength. LB Vontaze Burefect is a beast at the weak side and led the NFL in tackles, his other LB Vinny Ray also proved to be a formidable player at that position. The secondary will be young, led by 1st overall selection CB Darqueze Dennard who should start immediately. Other CB’s Pac Man Jones, Terrance Newman and Leon Hall are all capable players. Safety is a good spot, led by newcomer Danieal Manning.

Outlook: This is the most hyped young team in the NFL. But now that Dalton is paid I expect him to fold like a cheap suit. The defense is in good shape but they need to stay healthy, If the offensive line van get healthy and play well, so will the Bengals. 10-6 is nothing to sneeze at.

1. Pittsburgh Steelers

HC: Mike Tomlin

OC: Todd Haley

DC: Dick LeBeau

Key Free Agent Addition: RB LaGarrette Blount

Key Loss: S Ryan Clark

Most Hyped Draft Pick: LB Ryan Shazier

Offense: Last season, QB Ben Roethlisberger and OC Todd Haley got on the same page letting Big Ben run a more up tempo no huddle offense, scoring an average of 28 points in the final 9 games a year ago. The line is solid, and C Markice Pouncey should be back to form after tearing his ACL. New line coach Mike Munchak will get this group ready to go. RB La’Veon Bell is the featured back, but look for LaGarrette Blount to bring more muscle while rookie Dri Archer gives you the speed and a chance to line out in the slot. TE Heath Miller is old reliable, while the WR corps gets a big boost from Lance Moore & rookie Martavis Bryant should help Antonio Brown get open. I look for the same continued success from the last 9 games a year ago.

Defense: The front 3 will be different without Bret Keisel and Ziggy Hood. DE Cameron Heyward is a good player, but who will step up around him? LB Ryan Shazier should be a starter at ILB, paired with Lawrence Timmons. On the outside look for Jarvis Jones and Jason Worilds to step up their performances. The secondary lost a vocal and locker room leader in Ryan Clark, but still have Troy Polomalu at SS and CB Ike Taylor to anchor that unit.

Outlook: With Big Ben and Haley on the same page, I think the Steelers can make a potential Super Bowl run, but the defense will be an issue. This will be a young team, but it is better to be young on defense and veteran on offense than vice-versa. The Steelers can make a run, but this will be a tight division as usual. Look for 11-5 this season.

Excellent preview of the AFC North, hcmv! Best of luck to your Saints this season. I'm thinking they'll re-capture the NFC South title. With Cam Newton coming off surgery and virtually every veteran Panthers receiver gone, I think Carolina might fall from the top.

Well tonight is the night Denver gets a practice run at redemption against the Seahawks..The real thing occurs for us week 3, in Seattle, so this will be a good tune-up!

2014 AFC South Preview

4. Houston Texans

HC & OC: Bill O’Brien

DC: Romeo Crennell

Key Free Agent Pickup: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick

Key Free Agent Loss: TE Owen Daniels

Most Hyped Draft Pick: DE Jadaveon Clowney (1st overall)

Offense:  Ryan Fitzpatrick will start at QB, so don’t expect records to be set or broken, but Fitzpatrick is a good game manager which is what the Texans need at least this season. The line is led by LT Duane Brown coming off a Pro Bowl season and being the lone bright spot on the line. Loof for rookie Xavier Su’a-Filo to get a lot of playing time and possibly start at LG. The right side needs someone to step up, while C is Chris Myers job to lose. Andre Johnson should benefit more when the Texans use the 2 TE sets since it will give him more freedom of movement and hopefully more options in the passing game, especially with DeAndre Hopkins on the other side. Losing Owen Daniels at TE really hurts, but look for rookie CJ Fiedorowicz to be his replacement, and Garrett Graham on the other TE spot to be the main look. Arian Foster is back at RB but he needs to stay healthy, and Andre Brown needs to stay healthy if Foster can’t go.

Defense: The front 3 is led by JJ Watt, but look for rookies Louis Nix at NT and the other DE spot to be filled by Jeoffery Pagan. The line will be young, but Watt should put up decent numbers but look for a production drop off. All eyes are on OLB Jadaveon Clowney who will be joined at the other OLB by Whitney Mercilus who should be one of the better OLB tandems in the league.  ILB Brian Cushing needs to stay healthy and be an everydown player, while Brooks Reid needs to step up if Cush can’t go. The Texans secondary is a big issue with CB’s Kareem Jackson and Jonathan Joseph being inconcsistent and safeties Shiloh Keo and DJ Swearinger will be pushed by Kendrick Lewis and Chris Clemons.

Outlook: Don’t be surprised if the Texans have the top pick again next season. This will be the weakest division in the AFC so that may help the Texans a little bit. I think the defense makes strides but the offense is going to take a huge step back. Still, in a year or 2 this is a good team. I will call for Houston to go 3-13.

3. Tennessee Titans

HC: Ken Whisenhunt

OC: Jason Michael

DC: Ray Horton
Key Free Agent Pickup: T Michael Oher

Key Free Agent Loss: RB Chris Johnson

Most Hyped Draft Pick: RB Bishop Sankey

Offense: For Jake Locker it’s put up or shut up time. If he can’t cut it or stay healthy he won’t be the QB. Charlie Whitehurst or rookie and former LSU QB Zach Mettenberger could get some looks if Locker struggles or more likely gets hurt. RB Shonn Greene gets help with Bishop Sankey who replaces the underperforming but still exciting Chris Johnson. The Titan’s line looks strong, and with 1st round pick Taylor Lewan backing up Michael Oher at RT there is depth on the line. LT Michael Roos is an often overlooked player. Now we come to the weak part of Tennessee which IMO is the WR’s. Dexter McCluster was a good pick up in FA but he is no franchise guy. Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter (Hunter in particular) have to step up. TE Delanie Walker is a good target in the middle and will likely lead the team in receptions.

Defense: The Titans will switch to the 3-4, and the player who benefits the most on the line will be Al Woods who comes over from Pittsburgh. Rookie DaQuan Jones will play the DT slot next to the NT (Woods or Sammie Hill) while the Karl Klug and Ropati Pitoitua will bring versatility to the line. At OLB look for Akeem Ayers and Shaun Phillips to make an impact while on the inside its Zach Brown and Wesley Woodyard to make sure big run plays are stopped at the line. In the secondary only CB Jason McCourtney is a proven player, Bidi Wreh-Wilson and Coty Sensabaugh will compete to start next to him. The safeties are set with Bernard Pollard and Michael Griffen.

Outlook: I look for the Titans to step back, and for 2 big reasons: QB & WR play. When Whisenhunt was at Arizona he had Kurt Warner at QB and he had Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Bolden at WR. Nobody on the Titans roster is even close to those 3. I like the Titans defense, but that will be all they will be is a good defense with an average offense. This team looks like the Jets (Bonus points if you get the connection), with slightly more talent. But I will call for a 6-10 record and a search for a new QB and WR.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars

HC: Gus Bradley

OC: Jedd Fisch

DC: Bob Babich

Key Free Agent Addition: RB Toby Gerhart

Key Free Agent Loss: RB Maurice Jones-Drew

Most Hyped Draft Pick: QB Blake Bortles

Offense: Look for Bortles to get the starting nod over Chad Henne at some point in the season, but Henne will start at least opening day. RB Toby Gerhart gets a chance to shine, but they lack another threat at the position. Storm Johnson shows some promise however. The line should be helped by LG and former Bronco Zane Beadles. Luke Joeckel moves from R to LT while 3rd round pick Brandon Linder will likely be starting at RG. Austin Pazstor will get the look at RT while Mike Brewster and Patrick Lewis are neck to neck to start at C. TE Mercedes Lewis should benefit from the new additions at WR and is an underrated target in the middle. Look for rookies Marquise Lee and Allen Robinson to break out at WR and veteran WR Cecil Shorts to guide them as the season unfolds.

Defense: LY Jacksonville had some older players who are now gone from the team. The DE’s on the front 4 will be Red Bryant and Chris Clemons, but look for rookie Chris Smith to play a role. Ziggy Hood comes in to play DT after playing DE in a 3-4, and Roy Miller is the other DT. LB’s may be the strength with OLB DeKoda Watson the best of the bunch, paired with Geno Hayes and rookie Telvin Smith. Paul Posluszny is the MLB, and the heart and soul of the defense. The DB’s have an issue at Safety, but I think Winston Guy will provide some leadership, but look for rookie CB Aaron Colvin to be ready in October. Taking the CB spots at the opener will be Alan Ball & Dwayne Gratz.

Outlook: I like Jacksonville as the NFL Dark Horse this season, they will be a much improved team, and will be one that could be in the playoff picture late in the year. I know I sound crazy but I am optimistic about the future and this season for the Jags. Despite all the hype I have given them I think 7-9 is the record, but this is a team that will win in the future and they are using the Seattle model to build a winner down south.

1. Indianapolis Colts

HC: Chuck Pagano

OC: Pep Hamilton

DC: Greg Manusky

Key Free Agent Pickup: WR Hakeem Nicks

Key Free Agent Loss: RB Donald Brown

Most Hyped Draft Pick: WR Donte Moncrief

Offense: Andrew Luck is just like Peyton Manning, irreplaceable if injured. Keeping him upright will be the key, and the teams 1st pick was G Jack Mewhort. The line really struggled a year ago, one of the reasons why they took Mewhort but it is clear they need to do a better job run blocking. Trent Richardson was a disappointment at RB, but look for Ahmad Bradshaw to be the main guy at RB. Daniel Herron is a good option at RB after Vick Ballard is gone for the season. TE’s Colby Fleener and Dwayne Allen will be relied upon in the Colts offense as not only receivers but blockers. Finally for Luck, the Colts have the best depth at WR since he arrived. Reggie Wayne is in the final year of his contract and coming off an injury but his leadership is what is most important. TY Hilton is a great deep threat and he is joined by rookie Donte Moncrief who should be a big weapon nest season but will learn the ropes this year. Hakeem Nicks comes over from the Giants and should be reliable.

Defense: The Colts defense LY was just plain awful, but you really didn’t see it b/c the offense picked up the slack. ILB D’Qwell Jackson was brought in to not only provide toughness but some leadership as well. DT Rickey Jean-Francois has underperformed in his NFL career, but once motivated he can be unstoppable. Look for ILB Kelvin Sheppard to make an impact, either backing up Jackson or starting next to him. When healthy OLB Robert Mathis is an effective pass rusher, but the key word is healthy, and of course not taking PED’s so he will miss the 1st 4 games. LaRon Landry is a great Safety, but nobody has stepped up to take the other slot. CB’s look strong led by Vontae Davis and Greg Toler.

Outlook: The Colts offense doesn’t worry me unless Luck gets hurt. If he goes down, this team unravels. The Colts line needs to get better, so the rushing woes aren’t all on Richardson or Bradshaw. The good news is this is the most talented team in the South, but this is not an elite NFL team. The Colts need a strong pass rusher and a strong cover man or the scheme falls apart and its more of the LY’s defense that shows up. At some point the Colts need to find a pass rusher and they missed on that in the draft and in free agency this past season. Still, I think the Colts go 10-6 but will be one and done in the post season.

After just seeing the Seahawks pick right up from where they left off and OBLITERATE the Green Bay Packers, I'm officially terrified!   My Broncos go into Seattle in Week 3..however, I do still have faith and confidence that at least this time we will make a decent game of it...providing we don't snap the ball over Peyton's head and into the endzone for a safety to start the game.. :P

The Seahawks did look very good, just like a defending Super Bowl champion should, but on the other end the Packers just didn't look that good at all.  Their lack of a defense is still a problem, and now their offensive line is having trouble keeping Aaron Rodgers upright.

I think that the Broncos are going to go up there and give the Seahawks everything they can handle.  I've got to figure that Manning and the rest of that offense are looking for a bit of redemption after the Super Bowl fiasco.

The Broncos scare me for obvious reasons, but I believe they won't be as unstoppable as they were during last year's regular season. Unless the new rules regarding defensive backs and receivers cause problems for everyone, I think the league will have adapted to Peyton and company.

I still think they win the division, with the Chiefs hopefully getting one of the wildcards!

LOL. Thanks Call Billy Bob.. Don't worry I'm used to it.. ;)  One of our members who rarely makes an appearance these days, Tarl_Cabot, is a San Diego Chargers fan and he and I used to enjoy some friendly banter each NFL season. Its always great to have so many fans here representing so many different teams.. Man, I was very impressed with your Chiefs last season.. I, for one was pulling for Andy Reid to be Coach of The Year with how he was able revitalize that team from what they were a year ago.. How in the world Ron Rivera of the Panthers got that over Reid, I'll never know..and Rivera did have a great season last year. (By the way I never did give you a formal Welcome to the land of CBN, Call Billy Bob..so Welcome! :) )

The AFC-West is definitely the place to be this year.  Good to hear pundits referring to it as the AFC-Best vice AFC-Worst!

Oh no Dove! As a Chiefs fan, I'm going to have a hard time overlooking your fan affiliation... but from interacting with you on here, I can vouch for you and look past it  ;) Looking forward to a competitive season in the good ol' AFC West!

Thanks Dove! Always refreshing to talk football, even in a James Bond related place. I'll be at Arrowhead for Broncos-Chiefs just like I have been for the last 6 straight years! Always my favorite atmosphere when Denver is in town. And I think Andy wins COTY if we win the division, but it was Denver's year - so kudos! Here's to the new season!

The AFC-West is definitely the place to be this year.  Good to hear pundits referring to it as the AFC-Best vice AFC-Worst!

Oh I'm used to being in enemy country - Oklahoma is 50/50 Broncos/Cowboys so I'm a bit of a loner both here and in real life.

Land of the free, home of the CHIEFS! At least you aren't a Raiders bum!

And JW love is always appreciated in my book!

What the hell ever became of Carl Tabot?  He started this whole mess and then bailed on us.  Maybe he converted from Bolts to Broncos and doesn't want to fess up to it.

BB, I spent a few years living in OKC when I was in high school.  Went to Douglas, Grant and NE high schools before returning to the Rockies for my last year of indoctrination and subsequent graduation.  I went to a whole slew of OU football games back in the day--when JC Watts was the man!  GO SOONERS

I'd love to see a JW Peppers type character in a Craig 007 installment.  Americans are easy targets (we are prone to taking ourselves a bit too seriously) and it'd be great to see DC as the straight man in that relationship.  He does that very well.

Yeah, Sooner magic lives on in my office. Expectations are high for them this year - kind of hard for me to get excited about, though, as an Arkansas fan... oh well.

That sounds good to me! If you can't step back and laugh at a stereotype of yourself, you take life WAY too seriously imo.

Well, well, well..what a Week 1!! (so far..) Patriots losing to the Dolphins ???  Saints blowing it to the Falcons in OT ??? Bills upsetting the Bears in OT?? The Browns mounting a hard fought almost-comeback against the Steelers?? Crazy! Oh and Denver was almost ANOTHER victim to one of Andrew Luck and his Colts' miracle comebacks..but thankfully our defense stood tall and held them off. But seriously the Broncos need to learn how to play complete games. We looked great in the 1st half but then took our foot off the gas pedal and looked awful the last half..Oh well, still plenty of time to learn and fix our mistakes.. :)

You've got a laugher this next week, Dove! My boys are looking more like the 2-14 squad of 2012 than last year's wildcard surprise...

Sorry to see your Chiefs get upset by the Titans, Billy Bob..I'm not ready to count them out of it just yet. Still plenty of time left in the season.. :)

Meanwhile, BRAVO to the Baltimore Ravens and the NFL for FINALLY doing the right thing and cutting and indefinitely suspending Ray Rice. The video of what actually happened in the elevator surfaced today and is absolutely shocking..

Me too... Having our defensive captain out for the year won't help, but there are 15 more chances to win!

And JUSTICE! Should have been the decision from the get-go.

I'm sorry, and I truly do not intend to be rude here, but those that suggest that the NFL and the Baltimore Ravens should be praised for what they did today are just 110% wrong.  Neither the NFL nor the Baltimore Ravens should get any credit or praise for doing what they did today.  If anything, what transpired today proved just how tone deaf they are and how above everything they think they are.  Had this video not been obtained by TMZ and released to the public, Ray Rice would have continued to be employed by both parties, even though it was clear all along what happened in that elevator.  The Ravens stood behind Rice, the fans gave him a standing ovation when he played in the preseason, and the NFL slapped him on the wrist for punching his fiance, and the DA's office in Baltimore failed in its job to prosecute Rice for domestic assault even when they had something they rarely have in such cases:  video evidence!

The Ravens only released him because they really had no other choice.  The public outrcy would have been staggering had they continued to employ him.  They were happy to employ him before the video was released, going as far as to publicly praise him on many occasions, before the public was allowed to see what actually transpired in that elevator.

Everyone, and I do mean everyone (aside from Rice's wife, of course), involved in this should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.  Nobody involved in this should be praised.  Not the Ravens, not Roger Goodell, absolutely nobody.  The whole thing is a disgrace.

Oh...I didn't mean it sound like I was actually praising the Ravens and NFL. I guess I could have chosen my words more carefully. I totally agree with you tdalton that everyone should be ashamed.
