Better late than never!
2014 AFC North Division Preview
4. Cleveland Browns
HC: Mike Pettine (1st season)
OC: Kyle Shanahan
DC: Jim O’Neal
Key Free Agent Pickup: S Donte Witner
Key Loss: LB D’Qwell Jackson
Most Hyped Draft Pick: QB Johnny Manziel
Offense: The offense is in limbo waiting for word on WR Josh Gordon and whether or not he will be suspended for the entire season, which IMO will happen. TE Jordan Cameron is a viable option in the passing game, along w/ free agent WR’s Earl Bennett, Miles Austin and Nate Burleson. The line is anchored by LT Joe Thomas & C Alex Mack but this was a line that couldn’t push off defenders, so despite a renewed vow to run the football, I doubt things will change too much. Ben Tate comes in from Houston and will no doubt start at RB, but he’s never been fully healthy, look for rookie Terrance West to play a big role. Brian Hoyer will get the nod to start the season at QB, but all eyes are on Manziel. I think Manziel will fold in the NFL. In college, he was scared of LSU’s defense, and he’ll see 31 defenses like that in the NFL.
Defense: This is the strength of this team. LB Karlos Dansby and S Donte Whitner should pay dividends for the Browns. CB Joe Haden IMO has been a little overrated, but will get help from the team’s 1st overall pick in CB Justin Gilbert. The front 3 needs NT Phil Taylor to step it up: he has a $5.5 million option for 2015. OLB is going to be an issue, former LSU star Barkevious Mingo has the potential to be great, but he didn’t quite live up to the hype and he came in a bit heavy into camp. Paul Kruger who was given a $40 million contract needs to step it up.
Outlook: Things are looking up for the Browns, but this is the same old story told on a different day. The fact is Cleveland has to make better front office decisions, and find some consistency with a head coach. Maybe Pettine is the right guy, maybe not. Still, this is a storied franchise (in name only) but still, Cleveland finishes 4-12.
3. Baltimore Ravens
HC: John Harbaugh
OC: Gary Kubiak
DC: Dean Pees
Key Free Agent Pickup: WR Steve Smith
Key Loss: T Michael Oher
Most Hyped Draft Pick: LB CJ Mosely
Offense: IMO whenever you give a player a huge contract they fold it in. QB Joe Flacco did exactly that a year ago. Expect new OC Kubiak to get him to change some of his bad habits. The line is going to be the biggest concern, gone is LT Michael Oher, Eugene Monroe takes his place, and he did play well. There’s a new C in Jeremy Zuttah. The right side is good with RG Marshall Yanda. RT and LG however are concerns. The WR’s get a lift with Steve Smith, but how good can he still be? Torrey Smith is effective, as is TE Dennis Pitta. RB Ray Rice has had off field incidents take his focus away from football, so he came in a little heavy into camp, but expect Bernard Pierce and rookie Lorenzo Taliaferro to shoulder the load.
Defense: Once the best in all of football, it really doesn’t look the same. The front 3 will be intriguing as DE Timmy Jurnigan looks to make an impact as a rookie. At NT Haloti Ngata & Terreance Cody are good, rare to have that size and depth at the postion. Chris Canty and rookie Berent Urban will square off for the other DE spot. OLB Terrell Suggs is still good, and will be helped by Courtney Upshaw and Elvis Dumerville on the other side. Rookie CJ Mosely has some shoes to fill taking the ILB spot, but the olther ILB Daryl Smith could be a Pro Bowler soon. The secondary is a huge issue. Rookie Terrance Brooks looks to be the starter at FS, while Matt Elam gets the early nod at SS. CB Lardarius Webb is coming off a knee injury, while Jimmy Smith on the other side is the best player on this group.
Outlook: When you are the defending champs, you get everyone’s best shot in all 16 games. The Ravens went 8-8, btu I think there is some improvement, but not by much. I still doubt the team looking at them on paper, but they have a stable front office that makes good decisions. 9-7 is an improvement, but this is team that can make 11 or 12 wins as the talent is there.
2. Cincinnati Bengals
HC: Marvin Lewis
OC: Hue Jackson
DC: Paul Gunther
Key Free Agent Addition: S Danieal Manning
Key Loss: T Anthony Collins
Most Hyped Draft Pick: RB Jeremy Hill
Offense: Andy Dalton just got a huge contract for going 0-3 in the playoffs. Still, he is a decent QB, and he has guided a team that has won 9,10, 11 games the last 3 seasons. He will be backed up by Jason Campbell so if he does go down, at least there is a reliable player to relieve him. WR AJ Green is one of the best players in the league at that position, but needs to work on catching the ball better, he’s had some cases of the drops at the worst time. TE Jermaine Gresham is a reliable target in the middle of the field. Aside from LT Andrew Whitworth, the line looks largely inconsistent, mostly due to free agency losses and injury. Rookie Jeremy Hill should be the RB to start at the end of the season, so look for Benjarvis Green-Ellis to be let go at some point, but right now Giovani Bernard is the starter.
Defense: The front 4 is not overly impressive, but this is a good team unit. DT Geno Atkins is the best lineman and he is coming off an injury, DE Carlos Dunlap is better when Atkins is at full strength. LB Vontaze Burefect is a beast at the weak side and led the NFL in tackles, his other LB Vinny Ray also proved to be a formidable player at that position. The secondary will be young, led by 1st overall selection CB Darqueze Dennard who should start immediately. Other CB’s Pac Man Jones, Terrance Newman and Leon Hall are all capable players. Safety is a good spot, led by newcomer Danieal Manning.
Outlook: This is the most hyped young team in the NFL. But now that Dalton is paid I expect him to fold like a cheap suit. The defense is in good shape but they need to stay healthy, If the offensive line van get healthy and play well, so will the Bengals. 10-6 is nothing to sneeze at.
1. Pittsburgh Steelers
HC: Mike Tomlin
OC: Todd Haley
DC: Dick LeBeau
Key Free Agent Addition: RB LaGarrette Blount
Key Loss: S Ryan Clark
Most Hyped Draft Pick: LB Ryan Shazier
Offense: Last season, QB Ben Roethlisberger and OC Todd Haley got on the same page letting Big Ben run a more up tempo no huddle offense, scoring an average of 28 points in the final 9 games a year ago. The line is solid, and C Markice Pouncey should be back to form after tearing his ACL. New line coach Mike Munchak will get this group ready to go. RB La’Veon Bell is the featured back, but look for LaGarrette Blount to bring more muscle while rookie Dri Archer gives you the speed and a chance to line out in the slot. TE Heath Miller is old reliable, while the WR corps gets a big boost from Lance Moore & rookie Martavis Bryant should help Antonio Brown get open. I look for the same continued success from the last 9 games a year ago.
Defense: The front 3 will be different without Bret Keisel and Ziggy Hood. DE Cameron Heyward is a good player, but who will step up around him? LB Ryan Shazier should be a starter at ILB, paired with Lawrence Timmons. On the outside look for Jarvis Jones and Jason Worilds to step up their performances. The secondary lost a vocal and locker room leader in Ryan Clark, but still have Troy Polomalu at SS and CB Ike Taylor to anchor that unit.
Outlook: With Big Ben and Haley on the same page, I think the Steelers can make a potential Super Bowl run, but the defense will be an issue. This will be a young team, but it is better to be young on defense and veteran on offense than vice-versa. The Steelers can make a run, but this will be a tight division as usual. Look for 11-5 this season.
