2nd seed in the AFC...

Congratulations on the playoff spot.

I'll be pulling for the Chargers once the Jets officially eliminate themselves from playoff contention tomorrow afternoon with a triple-digit loss to the Colts, which will hopefully be immediately followed by the dismissal of Rex Ryan, Brian Schottenheimer, and Mark Sanchez from employment with the team.

B) No break for the rookie QB/coach huh? I think Sanchez will be a good player...but it takes time.

Nope. No break whatsoever. If Sanchez was just making rookie mistakes, then I'd be OK with this season, but he's making mistakes that are just the sign of someone who doesn't know how to play the position. Rex Ryan reminds me a bit too much of Al Groh, a brilliant defensive mind who can't win the close games in the clutch as a head coach, as evident from this season's numerous losses in the closing moments. And, as for Schottenheimer, he's quite simply one of the worst OCs in the league, who thinks that more passing is the answer when Sanchez throws interception after interception, despite having one of the league's best rushing attacks.

The solution that the Jets should go with (but won't, since Sanchez has already been deemed "The Sanchize" and will probably the QB of this team for the next decade, regardless of how bad he is during that time) would be to go out and get Jon Gruden to coach the team, as he's already proven that he can take other peoples' players to the promised land, and then either sign Jeff Garcia or trade for Billy Volek, either of whom is a significant upgrade over what's at the QB position now.

Usually, I'm all for giving a coach a chance. I actually didn't think that Mangini deserved to be fired after last season, but this season has been just a huge embarrassment. If the front office had just recognized that this was a veteran team that was just a QB away from being a Super Bowl contender this season and gone out and gotten a proven QB to helm this team, then I have no doubt in my mind that the Jets could have gone deep into the season with just one or two losses. Instead, we have to develop a rookie QB with a team that is otherwise ready to win now. By the time Sanchez is ready, that window will be closed, and he'll be guiding a rather mediocre team that will, at best, be able to challenge for the sixth playoff spot. I lay that blame at the feet of the head coach, who, by all accounts, made no effort to try to get Favre to return, and didn't recognize that there were far superior options available at the QB position than what we've had under center this season (Garcia, Warner, and Favre were all available, and just about any backup in the league can be had for a reasonable price in draft picks).

Ya Know, Farve and Sanchez throw 20+ picks for the Jets in back to back seasons and now Farve is the model of efficiency in Minn so that leads me to think their offense is a problem...just saying...and...would you prefer Jake Delhome, Jay Cutler or Jamarcus Russel for the Jets to the Sanchize™? Really, I think the kid will be good...but they don't have a San Diego-like() group of WRs/Te to throw the ball the way they do in NY yet...btw, Farve didn't want to come back. He knew his only chance to do anything worthwhile in the NFL at 39/40 was in Minnesota.

Amazingly enough, but only after the biggest farce of an NFL game I've ever seen. The Jets would have been run out of the stadium by the Colts starters (and they were there for a while before Caldwell pulled them). The NFL competition committee is going to have to look seriously at these types of situations in the offseason, because the Colts basically just gave the Jets the chance to control their own destiny when the Jets did absolutely nothing to deserve it.

But what can be done? Obviously, a situation like this does a disservice to any tiebreaker that takes 'opponent winning percentage' into account. The Colts (14-0 before today) and the Bengals (10-5 and without much to gain by risking injuries next week @NYJ) will likely be victories for the Jets to end the season. That's two opponents together averaging around a .800 winning percentage. We can call it whatever we want to call it, but a win is a win and as long as you play again next week you have a shot in this league. This should be a great postseason.

Maybe I'll regret this, but I'm rooting for everyone in the AFC besides the Ravens and Steelers next week. I believe in the "It's extremely difficult to defeat a team three times" saying. After the first round disaster a few years ago against the Steelers, we have all been longing for this second chance at the playoffs! Go Bengals! B)

Well, obviously nothing can be done, but it's still a disgusting situation and one that severely damages whatever "integrity" the NFL as a league still maintains. I'm a Jets fan, but am thoroughly disgusted with how the Jets got the win. They would have gone on to lose to the Colts' first string players by a good 20-points or so had the game continued, and thus been eliminated from the playoffs while more deserving teams behind them (like Pittsburgh, Denver, Jacksonville, Miami, and Houston) all having to stand by and watch as the Colts and (quite possibly) the Bengals simply hand the Jets a playoff spot.

I would have agreed with that had the Colts not played their starters at all. Manning played the first half, and they were having their way with the Jets for the most part (minus that kickoff return that made the 15-10 score when the starters left the game look much closer than it actually was), and their starters could have coasted to a rather easy 14-28 point victory without exerting a whole lot of effort.

Let's see...

Jets (8-7) host the Bengals (10-5)
Bengals should be resting starters at some point
Bengals do not control their "destiny" of getting a 3 or 4 seed
Who really cares if you get a 3 or 4 anyway? You still get 1st Round game at home
Jets need to win
Conclusion: Jets win and go to 9-7

Texans (8-7) host the Patriots (10-5)
A Patriots win means they clinch the 3 seed, but is that worth injury risks?
Texans need to win
Conclusion: Texans win and go to 9-7

Broncos (8-7) host the Chiefs (3-12)
The Chiefs are terrible and the Broncos should be fired up and ready to win
Conclusion: Broncos win and go to 9-7

Raiders (5-10) host the Ravens (8-7)
Raiders love to be spoilers and have beaten the Eagles, Bengals, and Broncos
Still, the Raiders are pretty bad
Ravens need to win
Conclusion: Ravens win and go to 9-7

Dolphins (7-8) host the Steelers (8-7)
Both teams have a small chance to make the playoffs and should be motivated
Conclusion: Who cares? The Steelers are not as good as the Bengals. B)

All I know is that, if I were the Bengals, I'd lay down and give the Jets the game, guaranteeing that I'd be playing them again in the first round of the playoffs.

As I understand it (and it's possible I'm wrong, since other generally reliable websites have been getting the playoff scenarios wrong in the last 24 hours), if the Jets win, they're the 5-seed based on tiebreakers with the Broncos and Ravens, and would travel to play the #4 seed, which would be the Bengals since the Jets would have to beat them to get in. Seriously, If I were Cincinnati, I'd just give the Jets the game, get a chance for my players to scout them from the sideline, and then go back to Cincinnati and prepare to embarrass them the next week. Even as a fan of the Jets, I'd have to say that they're easily the worst team in the playoff race, and the Bengals have to be loving the fact that this perfect opportunity to get a front-row seat to scout their playoff opponent fell right into their lap.

Looks like the Bengals are either awful or intentionally trying to lose to the Jets. I know we lost to the Texans and therefore probably prefer the Jets next week, but we should be careful what we wish for. We have lost several players that contributed along the way (Odom, Henry and Mau, among others) and are not playing like a playoff team...better be careful!

I would have gladly taken 10-6 with a first round loss after that disastrous loss to the Broncos in Week 1, but I can't say the same thing after starting 9-3! I hate to be negative about a playoff team, but we had better be able to turn on the switch next week!

GO BENGALS! B)

Exact same can be said for the Eagles who face the Cowboys again next week after also getting shut out today..

As for my sorry-B) Broncos, *throws up hands in utter disgust* 44-24 to the pathetic Chiefs AT HOME?? WTF?? Orton throws 3 costly INT's and our defense once again proved to be non-exisistant.. I expect major changes next season... we can start by firing Josh McDumbass!!

Congrats to my Jets, who have to be the luckiest team to ever play in the NFL. They still don't deserve the spot, but that'll probably be taken care of on Saturday afternoon when the Bengals obliterate them and expose them as a team that doesn't deserve to be in the postseason.

Absolutely. I think that Arizona and Philly will be in some tough contests next week that could go either way, but the Bengals should stomp the Jets pretty good and move on to face the Colts without breaking too much of a sweat (hopefully not, as I'm still going to be rooting for the Jets all the way, but being a realist I know that they don't even deserve to be there, and they're dismantling of the Bengals tonight is only going to serve as motivation for the Bengals to return the favor on Saturday).

Ok they got a gift from the Colts but you can't tell me that 37-0 drubbing didn't look like a playoff team! That defense is # 1 in the NFL and it showed-wow. I think they win next week...in a much closer game but they win.

Congrats. Be happy dude, your Jets are in the playoffs!! They started 4-6! :S

SD wins again on the last play...with backups. :)

LOL :) suddenly that whole Patriot-tree cache aint looking too good. Honestly, I'm no fan of Cutler but you had to think trading a 25 year old 4,000 passer instead of working things out over a few brews would have been preferable. Thats one reason why I'm sort of glad Denver did NOT make the playoffs, tdalton.. Had they snuck in the back door with either Baltimore or the Jets losing, we would have been just killed in the first game!! At least we were spared that.. B)

Jim Zorn (to nobody's surprise) is out with the Redskins (all signs pointing to Mike Shanahan becoming the next coach)

Perry Fewell and the entire Buffalo Bills staff...DONE!! (hmm secret meetings have taken place with the Bills and Bill Cowher...)

Rumblings and rumors that I've seen on espn.com...

Tom Cable...done in Oakland???

Josh McDaniels....in trouble in Denver???? (I kid you not.. there was a link to this rumor on the NFL insider page..)

We'll keep watching and waiting...as the coaching carousell turns!!

I feel sorry for Jim Zorn. I think that he has what it takes to be a very good coach in this league, but it's doubtful he'll ever get another chance because his first attempt at being a head coach was with Washington, who did nothing to support his efforts to turn things around there. He needed a new offensive line (something Washington's needed since long before Zorn got there), instead he got a 100 million dollar defensive lineman and no O-line help whatsoever. Hopefully Zorn gets an offensive coordinator job somewhere, as I think that he could thrive in such a position in a more stable environment. NO coach was going to be able to succeed under the Snyder/Cerrato regime (even Joe Gibbs didn't get it done), and too much was piled on Zorn's plate too quickly. There was also the ridiculous and classless decision to actually interview one of Zorn's assistants for Zorn's job while Zorn was still employed. That, to me, is despicable, and Zorn showed himself to be a pretty good guy in that situation, as I would have fired that assistant coach within one second of hearing that he had interviewed for my job behind my back while only bothering to tell me about it until afterward.

Perry Fewell and the entire Buffalo Bills staff...DONE!! (hmm secret meetings have taken place with the Bills and Bill Cowher...)

Supposedly, according to ESPN's ticker on the TV, Fewell will be interviewed for the permanent head coaching job with the Bills. I'm hoping that they decide to go with Brian Schottenheimer, if for no other reason than to take him away from the Jets so that Bill Callahan can become the new OC there.

Rumblings and rumors that I've seen on espn.com...

Tom Cable...done in Oakland???

On-field performance would indicate that Cable shouldn't be fired. He was absolutely correct in his assessment that with a different QB, the Raiders would have contended for a playoff spot (may not have gotten there, but certainly could have contended for one). I think, though, that the organization may still want to try Russell at QB again next year (this according to my putting together various things on ESPN today), and that Cable's stance on Russell may be the deciding factor in whether or not he stays.

Josh McDaniels....in trouble in Denver???? (I kid you not.. there was a link to this rumor on the NFL insider page..)

I don't think that the rumors here are necessarily unfounded. McDaniels did a terrible job of managing that team. Benching Brandon Marshall for a game in which you need to win to have a shot at the playoffs was one of the worst coaching decisions made this entire season, and the constant distraction that was the McDaniels/Marshall feud is, at the very least, partly his fault.

On another topic, I think that Eric Mangini absolutely should stay in Cleveland. He's done a fantastic job there in the last month or so, turning around that franchise and winning the most consecutive games for the franchise since Bill Belichik was the coach back in the mid-1990s. There's a foundation there, and with Holmgren now on board, they have some real positive momentum heading forward.
