McMahon will be on Letterman on Tuesday night.  Will Bond be mentioned?  It's a chance to see him out of character--will he seem Bondian?  Nothing i've seen him in gives me any confidence of that.

But if there's no mention of Bond whatsoever, could it mean he's in the middle of super-secret negotiations and is under strict orders not to discuss it???!?!?!? Aaaah the conspiracies...

Julian McMahon has the right look, but I don't think that having a Brosnan-esque Bond is where the series needs to be going right now. I think that 007 should be a little more mature and serious.

Very well said. :)

I think that McMahon would be just another Brosnan-type Bond, and that's exactly what the franchise DOES NOT need right now.

To me, McMahon looks more like a stock villain than James Bond. He would be a terrible choice all around. He doesn't have Brosnan's wit, and he looks kinda creepy to boot.

But with Owen,Jackman and Brosnan out of the picture, who else does that leave us?

McMahon
Craig
Scott

I honestly don't think that they'll pick an unknown actor such as that Goran guy to play 007.

How come? (Not speaking just for Goran Visnjic, but for all unknowns combined)

I'm not saying that he won't be picked... its that EON would want a well known actor to play 007.

What I'm mainly questioning is whether Eon would want an un-known or not. It'd be nice to hear something official on that issue.

Watched Mr. Mcmahon on Late Night with David Letterman last night. Whoever styled his hair is either totally incompetent, was out to make him look like an idiot, or just had so little to work with that he ended up looking like an idiot. A bald spot on the side of his head. Wow.

I did not get the Bondian vibe at all from him last night. I thought he seemed nervous, and a bit shallow. It was interesting to hear bits of the Australian accent come through.

Hope he's not Bond #6.

Yes he didn't have the Bondian vibe at all in person and he doesn't have it on screen--bland and a bit plastic. No way a Bond. And yes it looks as if creeping hair problems are happening for him also.

You are right on the mark per usual Bon-SAn. McMahon looked horrible and came accross as the opposite of Bond. He was very mousey and did not appear to have any confidence. One of the problems that Dalton had in LTK was his lack of hair. It can be dealt with, with hair pieces like Connery but those who try to style thier way out of it look rediculous. MacMahon may be a decent actor but NOT Bond.

If you place that interview alongside the ET interviews of Owen and Butler, a blind man could tell that this guy isn't in that league at all. Butler comes off the best BY FAR!!! Owen is fine but doesn't bring that devilish sense of humour to the interview like GB does. I have not seen Jackman interviewed regarding Bond so I can't judge at this point.

When Butler looks into the camera and says with a smile, "I'd make a great James Bond" you know he means it.

McMahon just did an appearance on Live With Regis and Kelly (I'm off work today and my wife watches it).

Even before he was asked anything about the Fantastic Four, they asked him about Bond and he gave a sort of sly smile, like he had been in talks, and gave a coy response. He talked about Bond being an iconic character, especially in the early days and said his favorite Bond was Connery. He even did a "Bond, James Bond."

Can you remember his exact words? Just interested to see if it sounds like a stock 'no comment' that somebody (his agent, EON, whoever) might have told him to say if the question came up. And how did the "Bond, James Bond" sound? :)

Sorry, Dino, but I had only just woke up not long before, so I didn't pay as close attention as I should have. His Bond, James Bond was pretty decent. But the reaction was kind of like I described it. Don't remember the exact words at all. Vibe-wise, it wasn't a stern no comment or vague, kind of more of an "I know something you don't" sort of tease. Not a confirmation, but definitely not an "I deal in facts" approach either.

As to his exact words;Kelly noted that there had been lots of rumors that McMahon would be the next James Bond. She said McMahon would make a "perfect" Bond; he was "So Shaken, Not Stirred" (forgive me international readers but thats how she talks). Julian was able to say "Bond, James Bond" and Regis said" You're getting ready".

Julian went on to make his usual statement about it being an iconic role up there with Indiana Jones, etc and Regis interrupted to ask who his favorite Bond was. Julian answered "Sean Connery,(Julian gave a look, by the way, that said that was a no brainer)-but that he had liked each of the ones that followed" went on to say that Connery created the role, it was interesting what could be done with the role, with film at the time and said "We'll see"..All things he had said before.

Regis pressed him, "So you HAVE heard the rumors?" "Yes, I have heard the rumors, but I don't know anything about them" Julian, said smiling at the camera. That last part, the discretion, the "I don't know anything" , IS a new approach, generally he won't stop talking about it. Someone has coached him, I suspect, to shut up about having talked to the Bond people. Why is anybody's guess.

He was clean shaven, his hair looked good, he was well dressed - and far more at ease than on Letterman. Bond-like. Perhaps because he was talking about himself and his work, instead of his famous (for Australia) parents -which was the gist of his Letterman appearance.

Out of all the guys mentioned so far, excluding Brosnan, I sort of like McMahon the best. He looks good on the big screen. And women I've talked to think he's hot--which is obviously important. I've always maintained that the success of Brosnan's Bond films has been the female factor. They loved Brosnan. I've visited companines where his picture is hanging at ladies' work stations. They're P.O.'d that he's not doing any more Bond films. To replace Brosnan with someone like Daniel Craig is to happily throw bundles of money into a fire and wave "bye-bye". But Julian McMahon does have something useable as Bond: a saturnine quality and a "cruel mouth". He looks like he has a better build than Moore, Dalton, and Brosnan. On his own he dresses really well. I don't usually pay attention to celebrity attire, but I like his suits. He wears the all black thing and doesn't look like an artistic cliche. For Bond, I think he's the perfect age. I mean, forgetting everything that has come before and what we've come to expect in a Bond film, he looks something like Fleming's description in "Casino Royale" (although I think Dalton in "Daylights" looked more like Fleming's Bond).

But yes, there are some pictures of McMahon around where you almost do a double-take and ask if that's really a person, or a clay statue built by a first-year student. And someone should make the suggestion to layoff the sunless tanning spray.

Qwerty:Glad to be here.

I have been lurking for months...although I originally came to assess Julian's chances, I have been reminded of my early fondness for Bond films. Although the last couple were rentals for me, prior to that they represented something a glimpse of things interesting and worldly for this girl from the suburbs.

I have also generally enjoyed the level of discussion here at CBn, use of proper spelling (!)and the debate about the UK class system. If JM doesn't get Bond, I could live with several of the other candidates, and am quite certain I will see Casino Royale a theater!

Now off to an early Independence Day picnic...

Dark Horizons has an exclusive interview with JM. Check out this paragraph.

As for his future, it may or may not include stepping into the shoes of one James Bond 007. "I think there is a bunch of people who are in consideration with the Broccolis and Sony. I think that they have to define exactly what they want to do with the character, as there were talks of it going younger and talks of it staying the same age or going slightly younger, so I think it just depends on what they want to do. James Bond is this wonderfully iconic kind of character that we have all been watching for forty years and they are big shoes to fill and an extraordinary one." Even if he were offered the role, McMahon isn't positive he would want the gig. "I would really have to kind of evaluate the way that I would look at the character and see what they want to do with it, wanting to make sure that we kind met at some place were we all felt comfortable doing the same thing."

I don't doubt his way of thinking there. It's a big role to take on - I'd want to know how it'd work with me if I was a contender.

Watched Mr. Mcmahon on Late Night with David Letterman last night.

Late Night with David Letterman hasn't been on air since 1993 (thanks to a Mr. Jay Leno). Perhaps sone perspective is needed:

This did not stop the rumors that still dogged Brosnan wherever he went. During an appearance on David Letterman's show in late 1984, Dave badgered Brosnan. "Aren't you going to be the new James Bond?" Pierce at first responded, "No comment," but then asserted that this was just a rumor begun by the supermarket tabloids.

Source

I'm surprised McMahon didn't do Carnac the Magnificent sthick with Paul Shaffer during "Stump the Band." (ED McMahon, Johnny Carson's sidekick, presented the envelopes, sealed inside a mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall's porch since noon...) Maybe instead of "Bond, James Bond" his catchprase could be "Heeeere's Johnny!"

You are correct sir! Hi-yo!

Finally, a summary of McMahon's apperance on the Late Show with David Letterman Too bad Rupert Jee and the Piedmont Birdcallers totally overshadowed Mr. McMahon.

Not sure what precisely you were responding to, but if it was to me, I must admit that I sometimes cannot help myself from responding to the myriad little "dings" (such as making a grandiose and long-winded point of correcting someone with the updated title of a talk show) that are doled out around here. I do try to make up for my inability to constantly be perfect by attempting to add a bit of thoughtful insight to the discourse from time to time.

Interesting tidbit from a poster at Mi6 showing an IMdb story which tells that Sony has exclusively bought out all the advertising for the season premiere of Nip/Tuck on September 20.

Hmmmmmm.......Julian McMahon and Sony on September 20. Can we say Bond? :) It seems quite the coincidence--who knows? I've started warming to the idea of McMahon as Bond(though not near my top choice) and this would be better than the final four with the possible exception of Alex.

Oh, I hope not. Bond shouldn't look a bit "sleezy." Sorry, but he does, at least to me. There are much better options.
