A good friend of mine is a member of the Philadelphia Film Society. Last night, he and I took in a sneak showing of the film, which also featured a Q/A by writer/director Richard Shepard. Here is my "mini-review":

**You will see Pierce at his most un-Bond like. His character is even more "out there" than Andy Osnard was. And, PIERCE IS ABASOLUTELY FANTASTIC DOING IT!

**Performances by Hope Davis and Greg Kinnear are also excellent.

**Rolf Kent delivers a terrific score.

**The movie is great, fantastic locations and great characters.

During the talks by Shepard, this movie was originally set to be a low budget film for around $250,000. Shepard had contacted Pierce's company looking for work as a writer on Thomas Crown 2, and instead, got Pierce interested in this project and Pierce actually asked to be in it.

A truly fun evening at the cinema and one of Pierce's best films in a long while.

The Matador will open on, friday December 23, 2005. And I was thinking that this will be a chance for the New York members of CBN, to show love to Pierce Brosnan. I wanted to know if any other members would like to meet up, on Tue December 27th, to see The Matador. I can promise a surprise, that will bring a smile to the faces of older CBN members. So, what did you think? Can we meet for the movie?

Thanks to this frickin' transit strike, I'm not even sure I'll be seeing the film Friday. The transit union is a bunch of idiots.

Anyone read any reviews yet? The New York Post gave it one star and my local paper, Newsday gave it 2 and a half, not like what either says matters much.

Here's a review for you...

I LOVED it! I'm not kidding. This is a very good movie and I think it's far and away Pierce's best performance (and best movie) ever. He really creates a character. I give this movie a very enthusiastic thumbs up. <==see, thumbs up.

The part about Brosnan really creating a character is so true! Here's my review as well...

The Matador (2005)

You can call me bias if you want, but I loved this film! The film made me jump, it made me laugh (a lot), twinge in disgust and even feel for an man who kills[ed] without feeling. To sum it up: funny, dramatic & intelligent. Pierce Brosnan was nothing but fantastic, one of his best performances -- up there with The Thomas Crown Affair although this time he's not just "Pierce Brosnan"... he really believably became this other person, the assassin Julian Nobel. And with this film being partially about friendship, Greg Kinnear added to the film too as the chemistry between him and Brosnan really worked. This movie is a must see... definitly a must see. You got that? A must see!

Read a review of it in EMPIRE and TOTAL FILM both gave it three out of five and said much the same - essentially the narrative is all over the place but it is tremendous fun and Pierce is truely exceptional. Really looking forward to seeing it.

I'm glad the NYPost's 1 star review didn't sway me from seeing this film. Very enjoyable. Pierce & Greg would probably make a better Sinclair & Wilde than Ben Stiller & whoever the Brit comedian is who is playing opposite him.

I've seen The Matador last nite.Without doubt this is Brosnan best film to date.A brilliant film with perfect directing, editing, cinematography, soundtrack and acting.Richard Shepard is a great filmmaker, the setup for The Matador is perfect. The Matador is an A grade film.I wish this film will do good business when it goes wide on January 20th.

The chemistry between Brosnan and Kinner is first class. This two guy should work again in future perhaps do a sequel to the Matador.

All these raves.

Perhaps Shepard could end up landing the director's job for The Topkapi Affair after all.

Having just seen The Matador, I'd like to recommend this to anyone who loves Brosnan. This is easily his best ever work and just a great little film.
