Now as to the questions of whether Brosnan will get nominated/win an Oscar or win a Golden Globe for his performance, well I'd have to say that I'm afraid I don't see him winning either as I believe Joaquin Phoenix should and will win for his role as Johnny Cash in Walk The Line. However, I would not be surprised to see Brosnan get nominated for an Oscar. While his role as Julian Noble has its comedic moments, he nevertheless portrays the anguish and uncertainty of his character's mental state well as he heads toward a nervous breakdown. In addition, Julian Noble is not a nice man, rather he's very uncouth and shallow, and yet Brosnan is able to make you care about him. It's a good performance--probably the best of his career.
By the way Blofeld's Cat, I do believe you're reading too much into the opening. I think it's just a coincidence.

The movie was brilliant. Very, very good. Shows Irish Dreamtime/Pierce's judgment in material. Very entertaining, great human, flawed characters, lovely, original story, beautiful photography by David Tattersall and wonderful central performances by Pierce, Greg Kinnear and Hope Davis.
Shepherd has made a formidable debut and has an ear for rich, fruity, funny dialogue. But his sense of humanity never places style above substance.
Whether this movie finds an immediate audience, this film will have a long, classic life rather like Tailor of Panama, Mars Attacks and Thomas Crown Affair.
Stuff the Golden Globes, Pierce should be content to let posterity be the judge of this marvellous, pithy, touching piece of quirky entertainment.
BTW, Richard Shepherd is wonderfully self-deprecating, camp and talented.
Please see it.
I'm smitten.

Finally got to see The Matador.
It's a pretty darn good movie, so why the wacky distribution, continuing delays, and poor communication?

No kidding! They're only opening it in 800 theatres on Friday too. (Typically a big studio release will get 2000-3000 theatres). Its got good buzz and reviews, so, yeah, what the hell is going on?

[box]Pierce Brosnan stands in front of Total Film rubbing his hands together. Not with glee you understand - although with a neat little flick like The Matador to promote, you could understand why he has every right to be gleeful

The best non-Bond Brosnan movie ever... 10/10 Better than "After the sunset" and "The Thomas Crown Affair".
I'll also post here the end title theme song, from "Los fabulosos cadillacs", an Argentinean music group. The song is called "Matador", and it was released lots of years before the movie.
Here are the lyrics in Spanish (translation coming soon):
Te estan buscando matador...!!!
Me dicen el matador, naci en barracas
si hablamos de matar mis palabras matan
no hace mucho tiempo que cayo el Leon Santillan
y ahora se que en cualquier momento me la van a dar
ahh matador.. ahh matador.. donde estas matador..
ahh matador...ahh matador
Me dicen el matador me estan buscando
en una fria pension los estoy esperando
agazapado en lo mas oscuro de mi habitacion
fusil en mano, espero mi final
ahh Matador, ahh matador
la cana te busca matador
la cana te prende matador...
matador..!! matador..!!, donde estas matador
matador no te vayas, matador..!! matador..!!,
oh yeah matador..!!, matador..!! matador..!!
Viento de libertad sangre combativa
en los bolsillos del pueblo la vieja herida
de pronto el dia se me hace de noche
Murmullos, corridas aquel golpe en la puerta,
llego la fuerza policial
ahh matador.. ahh matador..
mira hermano en que terminaste
por pelear por un mundo mejor
Que suenan, son balas me alcanzan,
me atrapan resiste, Victor Jara no calla.
Matador..!!, matador..!! matador te esta buscando
matador..!! matador..!! matador te estan matando
oh yeah matador..!!, matador..!! .. valiente matador
matador..!! ohh yeah..
matador..!!, matador..!!

Ther're looking for you Matador...!!!
I'm the Matador, I was born in Barracas
And talking about kill, my word kills
It wasn't long ago that Leon Santillan fell
and now I know that I could fall at any moment
ahh matador.. ahh matador.. where are you matador..
ahh matador...ahh matador
I'm the matador, They're looking for me
I'm waiting for them in a cold pension
crushed in the room's darker section
with a weapon in my hand, I'm waiting for my end.
ahh Matador, ahh matador
the cops are looking you, matador
the coops is getting you, matador...
matador..!! matador..!!, where are you Matador ?
matador, don't go, matador..!! matador..!!,
oh yeah matador..!!, matador..!! matador..!!
A wind of freedom. Fighting blood.
In the pockets of the town the old bleeding is.
soon, the day becomes the night
whispers, runaways, that knock on the door,
The police is here
ahh matador.. ahh matador..
look, brother, how did you finished
for fighting for a better world
the bullets hit me
they catch me, resist, Victor Jara doesn't shout his mouth.
Matador..!!, matador..!! matador, he's looking for you
matador..!! matador..!! matador, they're killing you.
oh yeah matador..!!, matador..!! .. corageous matador.
I'm the matador, from the 100 Buenos aires towns
I haven't got reason to be afraid. My words are like bullets.
Bullets of peace, bullets of justice
I'm the voice of the people who were shut up with no reason to do so.
Only because I think different, Oh God !
St. Mary of Buenos Aires, If everything could be OK...
Matador..!!, matador..!! If everything could be OK
matador..!!, matador..!! where are you going, matador?
matador..!! ohh yeah..
matador..!!, matador..!!
Hope you liked it.

Dull and a little hard to follow in parts (Brosnan's hallucinations of his younger self are confusing and unnecessary, and I don't quite understand just why
So, what with my newfound admiration for Brosnan's abilities, am I a convert to the "He Should Have Done One More Bond Film, With Suitably Decent Material" school of thought? Not really. I'm not sure that there's anything in Julian Noble that I'd wish to see brought to 007 (if anything, that would tip Broz's dreaded "Vulnerable Bond" over the edge), and THE MATADOR supports the view that, age-wise, the Brosmeister did indeed quit while he was still ahead.
Still, what a film! What a triumph!

If Brosnan was such a good actor it would show regardless as to what part he's playing. There was some real garbage starring Bela Lugosi, usually from Monogram Studios, but he would be acting as seriously as if he was doing a classic. The same is true with Dalton, you rarely felt like he was just slumming for a paycheck.

Didn't they already have the plot for "The Matador," in the Steve Martin/Rick Moranis movie, "My Blue Heaven?" This sounds like the biggest rip-off since "Fatal Attraction," took its plot from, "Play Misty For Me."
Last time I checked MY BLUE HEAVEN was about a former Mafia leader who became an informant for the FBI -- who has to try and protect said Mafia leader from attempts on his life.
Why does it seem like you're always trying to discount anything Brosnan is associated with?
