I think that Reeves' punishment should be that he's only allowed to play only one character in Hollywood for the rest of his life...

To FULLY understand whats going on in the wacky world of The Matrix, yeah....buy everything with its name on from the dire video game to the comfy pillow-cases.
But its not necessary to understand the basics of whats going.
You only need to watch the 3 movies in order to ultimately do that.
The other elements merely add a few more tidbits of info for the obsessed geek.

That's BS....You shouldn't have to see one movie to understand another one.....and with TESB we had the strolling script at the beginning if you recall Jim.

Well I guess I'll just ignore the Matrix trilogy.

Fair enough, but would any of that scrolling script make any sense if one hadn't seen the first film?
The Two Towers...makes no sense if the first one unseen
The Godfather Pt II is also something of a mystery without the first film. Back to the Future 2 would also be arrant piffle (not saying it isn't...)

(I know I keep using TTT as an analogy, but its a darn good one.

The simple answer is - yes of course you have to see the first movie to understand the second in this instance. Just because the history of sequels is filled with brainless fare like Rambos or Die Hards that one can jump into anywhere and understand in a blink, doesn't mean they all are.
If you didn't understand it, you quite obviously need to see the first one.
And if you have no interest in the first, don't expect the 2nd or 3rd to make much sense to you.

I didn't see "The Matrix" but thought I would give "Matrix Reloaded" a shot when I noticed a friend of mine had rented it. As I said earlier I turned it off in 10 to 15 minutes unable to follow what was going on. Why should I sit through 2 hours of something else so I can understand the 10 to 15 minutes of something that made no sense??
I'm not going to twist your arm to see it. Now that Hollywood is strip mining the Hong Kong-style martial arts/action film genre with movies like Charlie's Angels, Charlie's Angel's Full Throttle, Mission Impossible 2, and The Transporter, The Matrix has lost some of its novelty.
Plus John Gaeta's innovate and exciting, for 1999, "bullet time" visual effects style has been widely copied and parodied in other films such as Kung Pow: Enter the Fist .
As for the idea that the film has a responsibility to get the uninitiated up to speed on the story, I for one am very happy that the Wachowskis just decided to get on with their story. It would have taken too much screen time to explain again what "The Grid" was, the purpose of creating "The Matrix", what was Zion, and why Keanu Reeves can make those incredible martial arts moves, which accounts for most of The Matrix's running time anyway. Did you expect a opening crawl with "The story so far..." or an opening narration?
I am shocked by your zero tolerance for a film, which is the second chapter of a three part series, that requires its audience to be familiar with the characters, premise, and themes established in a previous film to comprehend it.
I would respect your opinion if you said that you though that The Matrix series sucked because it didn't appeal to your taste. But I am very disappointed that you say that I]The Matrix[/I] series sucks just because it requires a little effort on your part to understand its complicated premise.

Good news: no songs (I hate a soundtrack album full of songs, especially if they are only "inspired by" stuff)
Bad news: Only half of the 110 mins of music composed has been included.

Perhaps too hard to answer as we have seen the A New Hope, but the scroll does at least set up the various groups of the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. It also establishes Darth Vader and his search for Luke Skywalker. A few things may not make sense (the force perhaps?) but the level of complexity is vastly different to that of the Matrix.

OK, it's a run on sentence. But if you are going to ignore The Matrix series anyway, I don't think that there is much point in elaborating.
There really isn't much point for me to persuade you to change your position because even the first movie isn't that great. It certainly will never be nominated as one of the 100 Best Films by the American Film Institute or ever be on a list of the "Great Movies" by film critics and scholars. It also isn't what I would consider essential viewing.
Let's move on and talk about something else.

Unfortunately, by many people my age, THE MATRIX will be considered one of the best movies ever.
My, what an uneducated generation I'm part of. It makes me glad to be a bit more mature then them....for the most part...

Interestingly I received an advance DVD review copy of the two disc "X2: X-Men United" from 20th Century Fox today and in the main documentary (which is kickass by the way) one of the production team made a comment that I thought was appropriate here. She said that they were not stupid enough to assume that everyone had seen the first movie.
Interesting that X-Men gets that but the buffoons behind Matrix don't.

You lucky, lucky man! How is the DVD? You know, I still keep kicking myself for not yet having listened to the frist X-MEN film with the commentary yet - I just have the impression that Singer gives good commentaries.

And yet despite that, there was nothing to bring audiences up to speed on what had happened in the first X-Men movie....only a brief VO describing the world of the mutants.

Oh dear.
Still, I'm sure it'll make lots of money. And I'll probably still watch it to put it out of my misery.

That's exactly the same thought that encourages me since I have to explain to my friends over and over why I hate it and they don't get it.
Though, it's still something special these days if you don't like something just because almost everyone does.
EDIT:
Original Quote from IGN.com
"Is it really the end, after all? Much of the heady talk of the Architect from Reloaded goes unaddressed in Revolutions."
Well, that's exactly what I expected; but it's not what I hoped after spending 10 minutes of my life trying to understand what this wacky chap was talking about.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 5 .
Glorious, isn't it?
My dear ...
