I'm currently reading You Only Live Twice. Bond and Kissy have just had their chat overlooking the castle. After I finish this one, I may read From Russia With Love, or D-Day by Stephen E. Ambrose, or Band of Brothers by the same auther.

A few chapters into On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Interesting to note the alterations in the sequence of events early on in the story.

I started Doctor No a while ago and got too busy to get back into it. It's the last of Fleming's books that I haven't read, so I don't want to just jump back into reading when I have a few free minutes. I want to be able to dedicate some time to finishing it so I can appreciate the story. So... who knows when that will be. :)

I just finished the god-awful Colonel Sun by Kingsley Amis. It is the worse Bond book I ever read and I didn't think a Bond book could be worse then Brokenclaw by John Gardner but with Colonel Sun a worse Bond book has been written. I am very glad Amis only wrote on Bond book after reading Colonel Sun. The next Bond book I will be reading will be "The Man From Barbaroosa'' by John Gardner. Of course I have so many boks to read that it will be a while before I read "The Man From Barbaroosa". Most of Gardner's Bond books are good reading so I look forward to reading this book. The story to this book seems great. Of course I would rather read a new Bond novel by Raymond Benson anyday over any Bond book written by John Gardner.

Noting that this is all your opinion and you're perfectly entitled to it and I'm not here to change it for you...

...and I agree with you about Brokenclaw...

...but what's so bad about Colonel Sun? Story? Characters? Style? I'm not here to defend it - just interested.

NB - be wary of The Man from Barbarossa. It is weird.

I'm surprised to read that Colonel sun is awful!!
I was deceived by this book when I read it in the 70s. Because my only point of comparison was Fleming books.
But now that times as gone by, now that Wood, Gardner and Benson have written many Bond books my opinion regarding Colonel Sun has changed.
And now, I consider this book has one of the best nonFleming book.
And as Jim, I would like to know why IndyJones doesn't loke it at all?

Just finished with You Only Live Twice..... good read and is a good continuation of OHMSS. I'm thinking of picking up From Russia With Love after work this evening, even though I am also about 2/3 of the way through the Hitchcock Truffaut interview book which is really fascinating, by the way.

Ah! Another Ambrose fan. I have read most of his books, and also purchased the Band of Brothers DVD box set.

I really enjoyed his two non-military books: Undaunted Courage about Lewis & Clark, and Nothing Like it in the World about the building of the transcontinental railroad.

Cheers,

I am doing re-reads of all the new releases. Last time read was when I was a teen. The books are a lot more meaningful to me now as 40-something adult, especially since I am planning a novel based on some of my colleagues' and my own global exploits.

Here is the order I have re-read, which was based on bookstore availability:

Casino Royale
Moonraker
Diamonds are Forever
From Russia with Love
Doctor No
Live and Let Die
For Your Eyes Only
The Spy Who Loved Me
Goldfinger.

Fleming was truly a genius with his literary Bond. I will continue on after finishing Cussler's Golden Buddha, which I interrupted for TSWLM and GF.

Cheers,

Derringer

Watch out for the surprise ending where you find out that Bond has really been dead the whole time. You see, he was killed at the beginning of the story.

Finished the Hitchcock book and started in on From Russia With Love.

Still haven't picked up those books by Ambrose though. I loved the Band of Brothers series and want to read his books now..... Should I start with D-Day or Band of Brothers the book? And my bookstore has the one about B-24 bomber pilots in hardback on sale!

No, sir. Sorry, sir.

We weren't trained to read at Camp X, sir.

You know, its just too much effort to pour and hold a book at the same time.

I finished reading last night. I was a little confused by the last few chapters but I think I understand now. It was awesome. The only other Fleming book I have read is Doctor No and I didn't enjoy it. But hopefully since I am reading them in order I will like them all. I will start reading Live and Let Die tonight.

Live And Let Die is one of the best Righty. I'm sure you'll really enjoy it. It's another one of those that once you start reading, you can't put it down.
