It's so erotic the way Fleming fleshes HoneyRyder on those pages. She is such a cock tease.

Yeah, I'm doing that now. I'm actually up to Gardner ... or at least I will be but I took a break to read a Ludlum to switch it up.
Yeah, I think you need to take a break in between. My plan is to read the Higson novels, take a break and then go straight into Fleming.

I like that the story is emotionally real. The best Bond stories are the ones that have a human centre. Bond here is as messed up as all of us, and it's almost like a character study. The last half especially. He has a distinct character arc, and that's something of a rare thing. The Bond that we start with gradually changes, only for him to revert back by the end of the book. After the torture, he values life and considers retirement, wondering if he's on the right side. He lets his guard down for love and is betrayed to the point where he will find it very hard to trust anyone again. And with that, you have the basis for Bond's character.

In my opinion, if you're not enjoying Licence Renewed then you probably won't like the others. Licence Renewed isn't the best Gardner but it sets the tone for his take on the literary Bond.Great idea Righty007, although Im struggling to enjoy Licence Renewed.
Tell me do they get better
I suggest finishing Licence Renewed and then giving For Special Services a shot. I like it better because it's got the return of SPECTRE and Cedar Leiter.
