Thanks! :] And I'll make sure to post during/after I finish the book. It'll be something interesting to finally discuss with someone, I don't know anyone who's read any Bond books.A perfect way to start the series. Welcome to the CBn Forums as well.

I don't know anyone who's read any Bond books.
You'll soon find that is definitely not the case here.

I'm on Chapter 15 of Goldfinger. I started reading the books in order recently. I have to admit when I heard they were doing Casino Royale in 2006 I made sure to read that one right away! I had never read them before. I was always a big fan of the films. I'm really enjoying the comparison. The Fleming Bond is much more real. The books are great!
I did the same. When CR was finally in theaters, I was reading 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service. But basically I got hooked on the double-oh-books, when I was anticipating for Casino Royale.

Finished Thunderball and I'm almost done with Live And Let Die.
What were/are your impressions of those two?

I'm currently re-reading CR. I can't believe it has been two years since I last read it for the first time.

Seeing as this would be the case, I started reading Casino Royale early last week and am already through to Diamonds Are Forever. I had read a few Bond books before, but reading them in order is very rewarding. I plan on reading all the Flemings, Colonel Sun, the Gardners, and the Bensons while here this summer.
I'd like to know what everyone thinks about including The Biography of 007 (Pearson) and the two Woods novelizations into my reading in between Colonel Sun and Licence Renewed. I've found this subject is very widely contested. Any help would be appreciated.
Side Note: I've started my UK Cape first edition collection. I've scored Octopussy, Man with the Golden Gun, The Spy who loved me, you only live twice, and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Any help in securing any of the others for a reasonable price (Under $70), would be much appreciated.

I'm in the process of reading all of the Bond books, in order, at the moment. I recently found out I have to go to summer school to graduate college this year. I don't know about everywhere else, but in Baton Rouge, Louisiana (a strictly college town), the entire city is dead in the summers, so I'll be here pretty much isolated from anyone I know.

My friend,
I, too, have collected a number of the UK Cape first editions. The ones you've listed are the most easily obtained, and also the cheapest (because they were more widely printed, and thus more common). Unfortunately to find very many of the others for under $70 will be near impossible. In fact, expect to pay into the thousands, then the tens of thousands the closer you get down to Casino Royale. Not to dampen your spirits of course! As an alternative you might want to search around ebay or online used book shops for FEL reproductions. In the 90s, FEL published the entire Fleming set as exact copies of the UK Cape firsts (I think there's only a small FEL logo on the back flap or something in order to discourage buyers from being duped into thinking they're actual firsts). They're so exact that even the same typing errors and the original cover price are marked on them. I know they aren't the true firsts, but they're the closest you'll get without spending tens of thousands - and they look great on the bookshelf! You can usually pick them up for under a hundred bucks, though Casino Royale sometimes tops that mark.
Just some friendly advice!
As for your task of reading all the Bond books in order, I say go for it, and soak up every Bond book, including Pearson's excellent "biography." I did this, too, around the time Benson had started writing them. I went back and started at CR, went through all the Gardners, and continued with Benson as they were released. Now I mostly stick to just reading the Fleming's every now and then (not counting Higson and the other new books coming out), but I wouldn't mind another crack at Colonel Sun which I haven't read in years, but truly love.
All the best!

I was aware of the FEL editions, but I just couldn't live with myself having them sit up there with my true firsts and not feel guilty every time I looked at them. As I near Casino Royale, I'm content with the later impressions of the 1st editions, so long as the books boards/spine/dust jackets are the same as the originals.
Casino Royale seems to be trouble, though. Hopefully some unfortunate soul will sell it not knowing its worth and I'll be there to take advantage. Also, I've considered the possibility of swiping it from a library somewhere (Sorry, miss. I lost the book...) and paying for a brand new hardback copy for the library...they'll never know what hit 'em.
