the moore movies have always been some of my favourites... mostly because of the humour and moore's playful portrayal of bond... if you don't lighten up when watching a moore bond you'll probably hate him!

#1. MOONRAKER

I love the pre-titles sky-diving sequence, as well as the whole Jaws chasing Bond, cat and mouse thing... this isn't supposed to be a hard-edged espionage thriller, so don't treat it like one... it's great entertainment...
To me this Bond movie has the most fun, the best jokes, the most gadgets, and the most sinister scheme...
The first half of the movie... with Drax's henchmen trying to kill Bond one after the other is great, Chang is hilarious ("play it again, sam")... that sniper in the tree... the guy in the hearse... lol and the Gondola! c'mon... a Gondola that turns into a hovercraft and glides through the city... that's the funniest thing i've ever seen... and that double-taking pigeon is a classic... and when Bond's speed boat ejects him in a hanglider while Jaws goes over the waterfall... this is classic Bond stuff...
the only thing that annoyed me was the Dolly-Jaws thing.. but now i find it kind of funny...
and am i the only one that enjoyed the space sequence? i mean... Drax is about to eliminate the human race and replace it with his own super race...so Bond goes up to stop him... what's wrong with that?
one of my favourites, a great, entertaining ride...

#2. OCTOPUSSY

At first i really hated this one, aside from the awesome opening teaser (Bond leads the missile into the hangar and destroys the very thing he was assigned to destroy in thr first place =) ), i was bored as hell throughout the india scenes with Bond and Kamal, and could never make it through the rest of the movie... but once i did, i saw the amazing second half, which is pretty much non-stop action, great stuff!
All the bad guys were memorable (that buzz-saw yo yo!) and the train+circus bit was great and creepy... the ending is the best of all... climax after climax.. Maud Adams- "Oh, James!"
the Tarzan yell was overdoing it though!

#3. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN

This used to be my favourite... Scaramanga is the best Moore villain, he just seems like a true assassin... i loved how the whole movie built up to the final showdown between walther ppk and the golden gun
this is even sillier than Moonraker... but that's what makes it so entertaining! i mean look at the main henchman... nick nack.. lol
the karate scene was hilarious...( kung-fu schoolgirls! )... and the 360 barrel roll over the bridge with the kazoo sound effect was priceless...
although JW Pepper and that elephant selling kid are so annoying!

the rest aren't as entertaining for me... can't help but fall asleep...zzz

#4. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME

great bond film with a strong start... although the yellow snowsuit was kind of ridiculous... XXX is the one of the best Bond girls, Jaw's debut, and the awesome Lotus Esprit car/submarine!
otherwise i found the 2nd half somewhat boring and Stromberg was a flat villain... boring to watch

#5. LIVE AND LET DIE

a cool Bond movie... with a great cast of villains second only to Octopussy's... Whisper's funny, as is Tee Hee (the finale on the train was cool), Mr. Big is sinister, and Baron Samedi stole the show...
Solitaire is also one of the coolest Bond girls... the only thing this movie was lacking was a good story and good action scenes!
i mean the boat chase was horrible...

#6. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

I've only seen it once... and barely remember it.. so it's 2nd to last on my list... a memorable car chase on the hills, a great setting in Greece, at least it was a lot better than:

#7. A VIEW TO A KILL

This probably would have been better with a fresh Bond... roger was just too old... and he slept with Grace Jones? eckk...
my pick for the worst Bond movie...

in closing... LONG LIVE THE DOUBLE-TAKING PIGEON!!! =D

If CGI was available in 1985, AVTAK would be much more fondly remembered.

Anyhoo, here's my rankings:

1 TSWLM
2 FYEO
3 TMWTGG
4 AVTAK
5 LALD
6 OP
7 MR - Ick, ick, ick. It's cheap entertainment, but I prefer SW, thank you very much.

I think Moores Movies are the most fun to watch. The give you that pure escapist fantasy, and that is how they should be judged. Here I go,

1. TSWLM (a longtime sereis highlight for me. It is magical whenever I see it!)

2. FYEO (A serious down to earth Moore film? Wow never thought I'd see the day lol!)

3. Octopussy (A great cold war plot, with some of the best Bond villians. Just the downfall like in Most of Moore's later performances is age. Not just with him but with everyone else too.

4. Live And Let Die. (Predjuice and No Q, but a fun and enjoyable romp!)

5. Moonraker (Not bad until outer space comes along. It is ahead of its time but to much of a SWLM remake. Perhaps if it was made a few years later...)

6. The Man With the Golden Gun (despite Scaramanga and another solid Roger Moore performance, this one is totally predictiable, and completelty ricdicouls)

7. A View to A Kill (Oh my Lord, Roger Moore just cant do anything small can he? It has to be an extreme with his films, they are either extremely good, or extreme ****. Why? Not even poor old Mr. Moore can save this one!)

I have never really fancied Roger Moores way to act James Bond. Way to much humour, and when the most serious movie is here, it

1. For Your Eyes Only - It really is the best of the Moore outings, probably the only Moore film where you could picture Connery in the role.

2. A View To a Kill - If I was ranking these films a while ago, I would have not put AVTAK so high, but I just watched it the other day, and I realized, I really really like it.

3. The Spy Who Loved Me - Moved down a few notches over the years. I love it, and love the huge turn around they made from Moore's first two...stinkers.

4. Moonraker - A odd choice I know, but I just love it. Yes it has over the top humor, yes it goes to outer space. But you know what? I love its excess, I love it for what it is (which, incidentally is my reason for loving TND, the other excessive Bond film of the series).

5. Octopussy - Great film, the pace slows down a bit when Bond is sneaking around Kamal's palace. Once Bond gets to Germany though, the film picks up again and never stops. Gotta love Bond in clown get up :)

Huge chasm (thanks to MBE for inspiring this :))

The Man With The Golden Gun - Horrible cinematogrophy, makes the film look really cheap. Maud Adams is good in the film, but she's given to little screentime and then killed.

Live and Let Die - Horribly horribly dated. Saved only by Yaphet Kotto who is great as Mr. Big/Kanaga. Moore has a fun time with his first time out as the role, but he's overshadowed by all the negatives of the film.

I'm so late into this topic ... never mind. I've been trying to avoid it but here goes (it is also my ranking as to which one I'd watch given the choice of all seven):

1. TSWLM - quite simply the best Bond movie, period. Everything is right for me, nothing seems ill-advised, the soundtrack, the title song, the locations, the actors, the story, thet stunts - all brilliant

2. MR - more of the above (in many ways, but that's another story - it's my list right?). MR is such a feelgood film. You may not like the space sections, but ... imagine that it were made today. Space flight by shuttle is possible (there seems to be a launch every fortnight), they're building the international space station etc. Sure lasers aren't really to the same level as in MR, but my point is MOONRAKER WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME.

3. LALD - clever. A great way for Eon to bring in a new Bond. A really quite tight storyline, mostly intelligent script, good characters (Yaphet Koto is quite fabulous as Kanaga/Mr Big), well-used locations. It's fun to watch and takes itself not too seriously (but just serious enough).

4=. TMWTGG, Octopussy and FYEO - I can't really separate these as I like them all. They each have negative points, but I would be really cruel to bring them all up again.

7. AVTAK - sorry AVTAK fans, just don't like it nearly as much as Moore's other six. One word summarises the whole film: flacid (still better than LTK though)

Sorry, my keyboard is being difficult..

Don't get me wrong... I love MR. All of it but the hoovercraft part in Venice, when the case was over and he was on land. That is an odd bit of ordein, IMO. Doyou prefer Bond's comedyto his action? I like comdey in Bond, but not that much, and good jokes, ones that are somewhat intelligent, not (IMO) ridiculous and obvious... (I didn't mean this insultingly o you in any way, in case it comes across as such)

Anyways... on topic... I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Ok here is what I have got:

1.The Spy Who Loved Me: Saved the series, Moore gives his greatest performances along with everything that makes Bond tick around him. Eaisly one of the series best (after the Brosnan's, of course :))

2. For Your Eyes Only: It is extremely enjoyable, and despite what people say, I like the score. Moore's performance is top notch along with a great Bond girl and villian. See, MGM, 007 going back to earth is not always a bad thing. The one thing that keeps it from number one, is it lacks the importance and all around myistque of TSWLM.

3. Live And Let Die: I rather enjoy this movie. Sure, its the most racist Bond, and No Q, but nontheless a FUN movie. It was a nice transition into the kind of films the 70's would bring.

4. Octopussy: Once again Moore proves why no actor should do more than 5 Bonds. (ok so maybe Brosnan can break that rule :) !) But while is defintiely unbelieveable, the plot is tense, and the villians are great. As usual with most Moore films, its fun to watch.

5. Moonraker: I think this is the lowest it has ever been. Its too bad becuase without the space parts its really not that bad. Sure the gondala takes it to far, Jaws is overused, and Drax is kind of boring, it is still neat to watch.

6. The Man With the Golden Gun: Well it would take to long to list all the bad things that went wrong with this one, so I will list the good things, Roger Moore, and Christopher Lee.

7. A View to a Kill: OMG, Moore just cant do anything small. The plot is a remamke of Goldfinger, Mayday is so ugly that I would rahter see Bond bed Max Zorin than her. And Stacy Sutton is the bigges bimbo in any 007 movie, ever. Poor Mr. Moore, he should have left w ith OP.

1) FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
2) OCTOPUSSY
3) THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
4) LIVE AND LET DIE
5) A VIEW TO A KILL
6) THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
7) MOONRAKER

1) FOR YOUR EYES ONLY - It lacks true class, but it's great fun without goofy gadgets and indestructable villains. It's just fun and down to earth.

2) OCTOPUSSY - This, for me, is a hair behind FYEO. The Moore Bonds were dumb fun, and this one was a lot of fun. Maud Adams and Kristina Wayborn are both great, and the film has nearly everything. I like Orlov and that set with the map of Europe.

3) THE SPY WHO LOVED ME - This one doesn't have a particularly brilliant plot, and I think Barbara Bach looks like a martian. However, it's just a great experience to watch. Great fun, great locales, great look, great score, great song.

4) LIVE AND LET DIE - There isn't too much to say about this one. Basically, I think of it as The French Connection meets James Bond meets Dolemite. Even the music in the New York sequences sounds like it was inspired by The French Connection. That's really all I have to say about it, except for Jane Seymour was extremely hot (not a word I like to use often) in the 70's.

5) A VIEW TO A KILL - I used to rate this as the worst Bond film, but it's growing on me- like a tumor. :) No, for all it's MANY faults (no pun intended), it does work plotwise. Roger Moore should not have been in it, Grace Jones and Tanya Roberts are TERRIBLE actresses, and Christopher Walken seems outta place in Bond movie. Still, it works on a (very low) level. I no longer think of it as a total loss.

6) THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN - This could have been a good movie, but I think it's awful. Christopher Lee is awesome, and I appreciate the whole duel between opposites idea. However, it's so underdeveloped and just plain stupid that I think it's one of THE worst Bond films.

7) MOONRAKER - This is beyond stupid fun, this is braindead. The narrative (what little there was) held together, but I didn't like what it built up to. I would not have minded so much going into space, but the damn lasers. Lasers were the last straw. This James Bond, not Flash Gordon. Note: I'm a huge fan of Flash Gordon. :)

1) FYEO
At last, a hardened, realistic Moore film. Excellent plot, with Moore's only really convincing performance.
2) TSWLM
A YOLT clone, but still excellent fun. Bond's fight with Jaws on the train is memorable and overall this is strong in every department, with a welcome cropping of much of the overt humour.
3) OP
It does have a little bit too much humour, but the plot is clever and the villains are brilliant.
4) LALD
Moore is a little bit bland, but it has many good elements, especially the set pieces and the sequences set in Harlem. Disappointing plot though.
5) MR
Wasting such a fantastic book and jumping on the Star Wars bandwagon is unforgivable. Jaws makes an unwelcome return, although Hugo Drax is superb, with some cracking lines.
6) TMWTGG
At times this is ridiculous. Bond's 'fight' with Nick-Nack at the end was absurd, as were the reams of silly jokes that were more suited to a carry on film. Moore has some good lines however, and the film manages to salvage some credit with the brilliant Scaramanga. Mary Goodnight was embarrassing, however.
7) AVTAK
A cheap Goldfinger re-hash with the biggest drip of a Bond girl ever who fails to notice an almighty air ship 'creeping' up on her. Moore looks due for his old age pension, and the fire engine sequence is forgettable. The whole film is dull, enlightened only by a masterful baddie, Max Zorin.

The Spy who Loved Me: Bond zenith. Stromberg is, agreed, a stupid villain - go live underwater, leave me alone, I don't care - who wears resplendently unpleasant nylon and really hasn't thought out sensible nutrition. A diet of fish will pall, and you've irradiated all the potatoes, yer daft [censored]. Furthermore, lack of forward planning means that, should Atlantis spring a leak or develop rising damp, he's nuked all the plumbers. And the nylon factories. And the detergent factories. You will be very smelly very quickly. Twerp. However, plus points here must be XXX's woolly hat and the feathers joke. Some of the stunts aren't too shabby, either. Top fun, albeit one is rapidly gaining the impression that Britain serves James Bond, rather than the other way around.

Moneypenny check: Still frustrated, the poor moo.

Live and Let Die: Sartorially the most resolutely fascinating James Bond film (and perhaps, of ANY type of film) ever. Quite barking and uniquely, albeit brilliantly, horrible clothes they all have to wear. Dr Kananga; most underrated Bond villain ever. Fact. Best final shot by a mile too; see, Bond films don't have to end with stupid puns upon the leading girl's name. Sometimes, the endings can be original and clever. Oh, it was all so long ago...Minus a point for spilling coffee into the saucer, which is unforgiveable.

Moneypenny check: Bond's mum. Try flirting with her now, eyebrow boy.

Moonraker: Oh, this is such fun, and thunderingly violent "to boot" (whatever that might mean). Gaze upon men being gassed to death. Gaze upon some half-witted bint being hounded to death. Gaze upon some chap with a flexible name being bunged through a glass clock face and then cut apart by piano wire...umm...to death. Look at all those adverts dash by! Chuckle heartily at Q's only decent line ever. The last epic and unashamed entertainment. Oh, the wonder of the performance of the camp bloke in the Rio hotel. The wonder of the performance (and dialogue) of the second most underrated villain in the Bond films. Thrill to the lines he's given! Cry joy-joy tears at the thought that he will spare all the little potatoes, even if he's killing off the human race (an overrated race). It's not all roses, though. Oh dear me, no. The Bondola. That damn fool air stewardess at the start who doesn't seem to object to a crashy death once the controls are shot out. The...space bit. And Shirley Bassey does disco. Run!

Moneypenny check: Not Bond's mum any more. Now she wants him to do a sex wee in her. Listen to that biological clock hammer away. It's hammerin' for you, you hopeless bitch.

The Man with the Golden Gun: So mediocre, they made it twice, albeit even more poorly (as The World is Not Enough). James Bond is a bit of a weasel here; the first hotel scene, slaps flyin', with the less inept Swede is about as Fleming as he got. He can't dress as a clown and bake quiche and grin all the bloody time, can he? The Lazar bit's fun, too. All collapses horribly whever that toxic midget and his comedy tune appear. All collapses horribly when the plot decides to become a) "topical" and :) unfathomably coincidental. All collapses horribly when there's a decision to have a duel because...well, just "because" (good enough reason). Waste of a good villain and a good Bond. TWINE worsened the situation by having neither of these redeeming features.

Moneypenny check: Menopausal. Grumpy. Get real, hag, he's never going near.

For Your Eyes Only: You're so old. You're so tired. And she's far, far too young for you, you randy old buzzard. And whilst we're in this aviary, this soi-disant "hard-edged" "thriller" relies on the whim of a parrot to save the day. Popular opinion: Moonraker, chock full of nasty violence = stupid. This mess = gritty. Yeah. Gritty parrot. Who's a gritty boy, then? Something of a missed opportunity with the lesbian/underwhelming villain/teenage nymphet/East German bodybuilder sex quadrant in that deserted monastery; could have been very lively. No dear, I said lively. Lively. Oh, turn your deaf aid up, you half-baked old pillock. Five million dollars to reprise the role? Oh, you heard that all right, didn't you? Put your clothes back on, and I'll buy you a Horlicks.

Moneypenny check: drag act.

Octopussy: Here comes the plot! Three-quarters of the way in! What is Kamal Khan for? Does he really care if the Russian walk over Western Europe? Why? Or is he in it for "the jewels". That's very camp. It's also twaddle. And when the fate of the world hangs in your mitts, and only your mitts, do you a) try to stop things at once or :) apply lipstick, a silly hat and a pair of comedy trizers? Multiple climaxes maybe, but firing blanks all the way. Does this film ever start? Wake me up once the racism's over and try to explain the plot to me in one minute or less. Hmm. Better make that two. Hours. With diagrams.

Moneypenny check: Cloned. Why?

A View to a Kill: Ah, shadows fall. So very tired. So very tired. Just let him sleep now. So very old. A film which introduces us to the notion that the villain can be a) a communist and :) a nazi, at the same time. Revolutionary. Or nonsense. Take your pick. Max Zorin: French? American? Russian? German? None of the above? Who knows. What's going on in that accent? Ah, as we enter the golden years, we are advised to take up new hobbies to convince everyone else we aren't dead yet. James Bond's is cookery. A genuinely terrible film, shockingly lazy, but I'm very fond of it. Perhaps that's why.

Moneypenny watch: necrophilia.

Oh Jim...where does one begin....perhaps I really should just let this dog lie...but there are few points I must challenge:

You are absolutely right to question the hotel scene in TMWGG. I think Moore caught on that the wasn't being quite as hard edged as he could be, so he took the easy way out in that movie and slapped Maud Adams around. That action makes his Bond far more mysgonistic than Connery ever was.

Now....as for FYEO...yes, the nymphet was far too young, and that is why he doesn't sleep with her. I know you might have missed that point since there was so much action elsewhere, but no, James did not bond with the ice skater. (And thank you for not making any Lisl jokes, because then I would have had to kill you.)

I wish I could argue about Moneypenny...but I can't. Alas.

But that makes him James Bond, nicht wahr?

Umm - unclear, admittedly, but I was referring to the moustachioed crossbow woman thing - she's far too young for him as well. The nymphet is off the radar.

Lisl is an insufficiently memorable or adequate character for any "jokes" to work

That and in the depth of maturity and pain he displays in a few scenes in FYEO and TSWLM mark him as Bond.

A) What moustache?
:) Yes, she is young, but she has maturity that life has given her, that makes her acceptable.

The nymphet is off the radar.

She is off many radars.

You and I have a different sense of memorable then. I was always impressed by the "grown-up" nature of their encounter. Both know that the other knows what game is being played -- and they don't care. They enjoy the time they have together.

And I would think anything PB related is joke worthy to you. (Surely, the great PB anti-fan knows that Countess answered to a far greater paramour than Columbo, do you not?)

I just watched all the Moore Bonds again recently. I'll give it another try.

1) For Your Eyes Only
2) The Spy Who Loved Me
3) Live and Let Die
4) Octopussy
5) A View To A Kill
6) Moonraker
7) The Man With The Golden Gun

1) For Your Eyes Only - Still my favorite Moore Bond. One of few of his films with any real excitement. Kristatos and Columbo are great, and I like Locke too (even though he reminds me of a murdurous Sir Elton John). The tacky score is a lot of fun. It sounds like ESPN music.

2) The Spy Who Loved Me - Great, magical experience. It's over the top and campy, but not too over the top. It's just right. It's also shameless in a way that I enjoy. The song and score embody that perfectfully.

3) Live and Let Die - God, I love this movie. Kananga is one of my favorite villains. "Did you touch that?" :) The whole cast is top-notch, and it's just so damn fun. Solitaire is great too. :)

4) Octopussy - This used to be #2, but it's really gone down. At times it is great, and and times it kinda lags. It also seems to drag on, and on........ and on. Kamal should NOT have escaped Germany, because the whole palace attack/plane fight really sucks. The end with "JAMES!" is great though.

5) A View To A Kill - Almost NOONE belonged in this movie. Roger Moore would have made a great exit with OP, Tanya Roberts just plain sucks, and Christopher Walken is very "un-Bond". Grace Jones worked, and so did Patrick Macnee. It could have been much better with a different actor, because the plot is actually quite fun. That's what is so sad, the plot could have been great (with some changes), but the people just sucked. Great song and score though.

6) Moonraker - *sigh* What the hell was Cubby thinking? James Bond with lasers. The narrative was decent enough for a while, but it got really stupid: How the hell do you CRAWL to escape the blast of a shuttle ignition? And lasers, my god. Jaws was pointless as well. The score was great though, I'll give it that.

7) The Man With The Golden Gun - Am I putting this last? "I sho' am, boy!" IMO this is the worst Bond film ever made. I like the duel idea between polar opposites, but this thing just fell apart. There was no plot. Don't bring up Gibson and the solex, that is ****. Goodnight was a moron. Roger with a cigar? The film was also EXTREMELY ugly and tacky. I'm glad I was born 1983 so I never had to see 1974. Not even Christopher Lee could save this thing. Or, for that matter, Maud Adams taking a shower.

Yeah, but it's neither important nor relevant

And not so much "anti"; more "immune" (qv book Pussy Galore and film Pussy Galore)
