If the lightness isn't to your liking Safari that's fine but there's more talent in masking seriousness with lightness than there is in making a serious story without any humour entirely.

Erm, I probably quite agree and I'm not entirely sure what I said to suggest I don't.

So, er...

What has been the general consensus so far (even if it's too early to tell) about the Eleventh Doctor?

At the moment I'm more than willing to give Smith a go. I was perhaps a little disappointed to see one of the more high profile candidates not get chosen, but I have a lot of confidence in the new producer, Moffatt (who is apart from being a fantastic writer is also a genuine life-long fan of the show). A new Dr is always an exciting time so fingers crossed!

My question to anyone is: in what direction would you like to see the show go in 2010, in terms of story, locations, old adversaries etc.?

Indeed, Moffat worked wonders with Jekyll IMHO (if the Master is ever to return, I hope that James Nesbitt gets the part).

I'm always willing to receive a new Doctor as well, but will miss Tennant a great deal :(

In terms of direction, I'm just curious to see what new or old things they will bring.

No corridors.

No alien corporations with an abundance of corporate logos and placards.

No henchman / ethnic academics spouting morals on everything like the UN.

No London girl as the assistant. There is more to the universe and indeed Britain than South London.

No :(ing daughter character played by an actress who cannot act and has only been cast because of the family link.

No Murray Gold. Okay - he got heaps better in the last three series, but his music can be hit and miss. Get Rob Lane in!

No Daleks.

No aliens that don't make an impact on the iconography of the series. Tennent has been era-defining, but his alien adversaries (apart from maybe BOE and the SLITHEEN) have hardly set the sci-fi world alight.

No tie-in design competitions with BLUE PETER. They're probably fixed anyway.

No Christmas Special that feels the need to depict a high street and council estate Christmas (check out THE NEXT DOCTOR for how to pitch a festive special successfully).

No ideas (such as the return of Peter Davison) that can be wasted on inane, audience twittering CHILDREN IN NEED / COMIC RELIEF special episodes as they are wasted and could enhance a proper series no end.

Well I'll reply to myself and get the ball rolling!

What I'd like to see in 2010:
A bit more mystery about the Doctor.
More 2 parters. Isn't it great when there's a cliffhanger to ponder over the week!
Ice Warriors. Yesssssss.
Sea Devils. Yessssss.
Sally Sparrow! Yes it's sad fanboyism, but there you go...
An episode set entirely within the crazy, magical world of the TARDIS (but done so much better than the naff INVASION OF TIME)
The REAL UNIT. Not that silly cardboard-cut-out bunch from last season... And while they're at it give 'em proper uniforms too!
At least one episode partially filmed outside of the UK. Even the old series with no budget at all managed to get to Europe a few times!
A multi-doctor story! McGann, McCoy, or Ecclestone would be great!
Bessie!!! I don't care how or why, just get 'er out there on the road!

What I'd rather not see in 2010:
Rose. Really seriously tired of her now...
The new companion is a Londoner with a family. Does the Doc only pick up chicks from Souf Lundin with cloying relatives?
Murray Gold getting so carried away. He really killed many episodes last season with his intrusive OTT scores.
No bigger than enormous Dalek / Cybermen season finales where the Universe itself is about to be destroyed, Earth is moved etc! Maybe it's just me but I just don't know where they can go with these monumentally massive cgi finales anymore! Every season they've got bigger, crazier and more than just a tad silly. Those old foes need to be properly menacing with stories that do them justice. How brilliant was DALEK in Ecclestone's seaon? That's what we need again!

Those are my thoughts. What would others like to see / not see in 2010?

Not wanting to detract from the present theme, for those who have read The Doctor in either comic book or novel form, what would you recommend to read and to avoid (and why)?

Jekyll - I guess it's one of those love it or hate it kind of stories. A lot of people seemed to also detest Nesbitt's performance, but I loved it.

And for my suggestions:

Bring Bessie back (even if it's at least one episode only), I'm sure there are numerous ways.
Bring back a better UNIT.
I've missed quite a few episodes lately, but I'd love for The Doctor to have an adventure in feudal Japan.
A couple of stories featuring some other alternate versions of Earth not seen on Who yet.
An alien race that could become a staple as strong as the Daleks or the Cybermen.

My goodness, I checked the spoiler - I'm keeping my fingers crosed for it to happen.

I think that it would be nice to have a couple of specials or TV movies showing us the adventures with said one.

Tease, tease, tease, those McGann rumours toying with this 8th fan's affection. :( It would be great to see him back just one more time even for a flashback. :)

Not wanting to detract from the present theme, for those who have read The Doctor in either comic book or novel form, what would you recommend to read and to avoid (and why)?

I would recommend the two Panini Books volumes of Doctor Who VOYAGER and Doctor Who THE WORLD SHAPERS.
Both of these volumes are reprints of 6th Dr stories from DWM in the 1980s, The artist is John Ridgway who IMHO has drawn the best Dr Who stories ever. Ridgway's art is extremely detailed and black and white (so Colin Baker's coat won't offend the sensibilities!). Some of the storylines are amazingly creative and clever.
The complete geek in me would love to see Voyager and Once Upon A Time Lord from those comics filmed... ah well...
As for novels I've not really gelled with the current range of original stories released for the New Series. For me they're aimed at a younger market and for the same reason I've also avoided the dramatised readings of them you can get on CD.
But if you haven't already done so I would also highly recommend the Big Finish audio adventures. They have dozens of new adventures featuring the Drs (Davision, Colin B, McCoy and McGann), companions and villains from the original series! Many of the stories are just terrific with impressive original music, effects and voice acting!

Agree with most of your points Zorin - especially this one.
Tennant has been fantastic and does deserve some original villains that could become icons.

I also agree on your "No Daleks" point but I only want them back if they're done properly.
New Who reintroduced them magnificently with DALEK being one of the best episodes in the show's long history because it made them frightening again. And that was just one! The overkill cgi Dalek hordes of recent years has unintentionally demonstrated a neat law of inverse proportions. The more there are the less frightening they become!

Lastly, totally agree on the "souf lundin" companion point! New Who is obsessively Londoncentric (irony since it's all filmed in Cardiff). Do they think no viewer will relate to a character that doesn't yell "WOT YOU SAY'N DOCTAAH GEEZA" !?!
In some ways it's like an extreme reaction to the Received Pronunciation bias that the old series suffered from. One extreme to another I guess...

Actually I disagree. Tennent need not be sidelined if there was a McGann angle as the latter could easily be trapped in the trapped Time Wars (something I would bet large amounts of Romulan Ale on to feature in Davies closing specials) and we have never seen McGann regenerate in Eccleston which could be the angle Davies can use and which will see his tenure as show runner go full circle. Davies has also made a point of featuring McGann in his episodes where possible (HUMAN NATURE / FAMILY OF BLOOD I believe) so could well be planning a return of the McGann. Actually, I'm going to disagree with my own thread here and suggest we will see McGann again before the year is out.

My money is also on a splinter of the Time Wars kickstarting Tennent's Christmas Day regeneration into Matt Smith.

Is mine the only heart to sink at the thought of their tackling the Time War? It's like all those dreary Time Lords sagas they did back in the 70s and 80s; piss poor mock mythology, like the unthinking man's Lord of the Rings (which I abominate in the first place). Give me Daleks blasting Cybermen in Tooting Bec (a nod there to Jon Pertwee :( ) anyday...

I take your point DB5.
Part of me would really like to see the Time War, but now that you remind me of it one thing DW has always done poorly is Timelords / Gallifrey stories... and RTD does have a tendency to massive overkill in some of his specials so perhaps it's better left alone... The biggest problem with the whole Timelord mythology for me is that it's so inconsistent and patently derivative of the Roman republic...
Still I would like to see a genuine multi-doc story bridging the old and new series. (THE NEXT DOCTOR had a lot of potential but welched out of doing something truly remarkable.)

hmm interesting idea but judging by the generally light tone of Christmas specials (and their general Christmasyness) I'd be really surprised to see the Time War then...

I don't know the old series and its mistakes / ambitions but I know an offshoot depiction of that is something Davies has held as his era's mythology from the start.

I didn't think there was anything "light" about the tone of THE NEXT DOCTOR which I rate as one of the most (if not THE) successful entries since the new era kicked in.

Agreed it is THE best so far and I don't mean to imply light as inconsequential... but I can't see a Time War at Christmas... may upset the digestion...

Couldn’t agree more. I want all those things. Sure, I’ve liked Tennant, but with a new Doctor, I want a complete overhaul. It’s the change we need.
