God, that QOS fight is so amazing. Perhaps the best hand-to-hand ever in a Bond movie. Thrilling, amazingly done, never confusing, and thoroughly engaged with an ironic narrative. I may be over-analyzing 45 seconds, but damn, what a scene.

Concurred. It's great. Smart choice to isolate it from any musical accompaniment as well. The scent of death has never been so smelly in Bond.

I disagree. Not too keen on that one. To quote Mark Kermode it felt like "Tellytubbies fighting and hitting their heads of walls". It's a good scene, but not a great one. The cinematography is pretty basic, too.

Nothing in comparison to Bourne ultimatum fight in morocco against assassin (had middle eastern name can't remember).

Must add that I'm a fan of the QoS scene esp when hes feeling his pulse

Speaking of kermode has anyone read/heard his review of skyfall. He's highly analytical and a Bond fan. Fingers crossed hes a fan!

Rotten Tomatoes has dropped to 95%. 42 fresh reviews and two rotten.

Negative review from IndieWire: http://www.indiewire...er-than-skyfall
They do, however, predict an Oscar nomination for Roger Deakins.

Interesting review. Pretty sure i'll disagree with every bit of it though, once I've seen the film.

Also, could anyone tell me what's so funny about...

One thing that has been constantly worrying about this movie is my fear of it not having intense fast paced quick action scenes

like this from Casino Royale

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZLFfyzEUX8

or this from Quantum Of Solace

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4ZgXiHPXMs

Please put my fear to rest !

Jeez, I forgot how brutal that fight in QoS was....anyway, on the action front, hand to hand combat, you'll be pleased.

Never confusing? Just what weed are you smoking? I remember 2008 there were dozens of threads about how Slate died. Was it a shard of glass to the neck? Scissors the femoral artery?

4 years later and it's still an over-edited mess. Almost as inept as Paul Greengrass.

David Bordwell calls the style "intensified continuity." More like intensified incontinence.

Okay I'm confused a B rating is considered Rotten by Rotten Tomatoes? I know the tone of the review isn't gushing all over Skyfall but jeez a B is still a B!!!

Could not agree more. Just because the fight is more aggressive, which is largely because of the quick cuts, lack of music, and increased sound effects, in no way does it make it the best fight scene. A matter of fact, I firmly believe this is where the film began to slip. Slate was poorly explained and was merely made to die. I love comparing it to FRWL on the train. Small space, one on one and look at the difference. FRWL still feels intense but is crystal clear in continuity.

Comparing the Slate fight to Greengrass' work is unfair.

To Greengrass.

While I agree about the problems with the QoS fight scene, I admire it and the CR stairwell fight for being more like the fight scenes of the Connery era in substance - short, tense one on one battles that don't strain suspension of disbelief too much. I'm not a big fan of the huge Brosnan era one man army kill fests that have somewhat unevenly stuck with us even into Craig's tenure. I want more fights like the FRWL train fight, the GF Oddjob fight, and the TB's pre-title sequence fight.

Jesus. I thought the artery puncturing was obvious, and distinctly Flemingian. I had zero problems - ever - understanding that. You want a [censored] up action scene? Go after the Port-Au-Prince harbour boat chase. How that ends makes literally zero sense.

Can't I even like a fight scene without the contrarian onslaught, anymore?

Thread going down the drain. Fast.

Yes, quite. The Arnold kunundrum with manipulative, badly placed, cues. The guy is good for writing themes. And that´s about it, as important as that might be, of course.

I can only speak for myself, but the only action sequence I found remotely enjoyable in QoS was the Tosca shootout, perhaps because the fragmentation was more clearly deliberate.

And I'm not really being contrarian, I assure you. I'd honestly prefer the hilariously limp Macnee + Moore fight scenes from AVTAK than the bulk of what's going on in QoS.

Exactly. Its editing syntax is utterly out.
It’s been put together by someone who seems to not understand the language of film – cinematically illiterate even.
To give a clear example, early on there is a cut to the flick knife opening – who’s holding it?

For me, this sequence perfectly illustrates all that’s so very wrong with QoS. It attempts to be all modern and tough, but it’s just confusing. It’s very difficult to be involved in a film when you're just watching chaos without any attempt at cohesion. It's why I don't care about the story, anything that happens in it and every character involved. It really is a disaster of a film.

As you said, it's the tone of the review that they use for a fresh/rotten review, not the final "score"

His gun drawn, 007 finds a fellow agent down and the baddie responsible on the lam. The baddie is always on the lam

Anyone know what he means by this?

I believe when he says "on the lam" he's referring to the fact that Patrice is getting away, or escaping. I looked searched the phrase on the net and it appears to be an American idiom. Probably why you are unfamiliar with it.
