I'm not familiar with the songs it was up against, but I guess that says something about them.

Well, it's not my favourite Bond song by any means, but well done Sam.

As I already said: I liked the song a lot.
But seriously - award worthy?
Ricky Gervais is absolutely right...

It's a shame that these were the two songs that EON had to choose from for SPECTRE. Either way they went they were getting a poor song. Ultimately, though, I think they chose the better of the two.
Absolutely agree, tdalton.
They're very similar in sound, too. It goes to show how specific EON's brief must have been for SPECTRE's theme song. I wonder if Newman was involved in both songs?

Yes, terribly sad. R.I.P to a true artist of music.

It's a good feedback to the movie for the DVD launch and although I'm not a big fan of the song, it would be a crime to consider the other nominees (jeez!!).
Nice job for the ones who get to choose. Skyfall and WOTW - 2 GG in a row.
Good bump for the Oscars!

Ditto. A fair few people obviously liked it, so congratulations to all involved. Another one for the EON trophy cabinet is good news.

I have to wonder how many of the voters actually listened to the song. There's just no way "Writing's on the Wall" is the best original song of 2015.
If it truly was the best of 2015, I'm going to go grab a kazoo and start work on my submission for 2016. Might have a decent shot at the Golden Globe next year.

The Golden Globes are a joke - and the industry knows it. They are all about getting famous people on camera.
I probably prefer "Writings on the Wall" to the other songs nominated - but Sam Smith doing a Bond song is getting headlines. Another lesser known artist doing a song nobody ever heard of won´t. That´s what made Smith win.
And that´s what made the other films win, too. Leonardo DiCaprio getting an award? Instantly click-worthy. The film which has just been released gets the award, too, of course - great PR. (Insert money here, please). It doesn´t hurt that they are actually good. But other films have been, too. THE MARTIAN, huge success, will have no chance against the "serious" other films, but the Golden Globes desperately want to get Matt Damon on stage and prove to the audience that their favorite can get a major award, too. So... push THE MARTIAN to the Comedy/Musical-category. Where it just does not fit. In no way. No way. Really.
But that´s what the Golden Globes are all about. Stars on camera.

People may not like the song as it is - by people I mean most Bond fans - but in the context of the film, and during the title sequence, it works more than many others in the series actually and by that token it is a very original song relating to the character and the film itself.
Watching it makes me see this more, that it works away from listening to it mostly without the film visual aid.

Because there is no category for science fiction films, or action adventure films. Like drama and comedy/musical are the only type of films that are award-worthy. As if.

And, with its win at the Golden Globes,
now must be considered the favorite for the
Oscar!!!

I can't vote in the Belgian election but I try not to bitch about the result if I can't take part. Apart from now, obviously.

Must have been a bad year for songs if "Writing's On the Wall" can be considered one of the five best of the year. Sadly, EON will take this and the Golden Globe as a sign that they don't need to try to improve the quality of the music.

I'm not a fan of WOTW but I thought this singer's rendition of it was pretty good. She has a beautiful voice. In fact, I wish she had sung it in the film itself:
I discovered it via a SPECTRE fan video highlighting Monica Bellucci's part that used Amanda Cole's version of the song:

No, it's not elections they do without in Belgium, but sometimes governments. Not long back it took about eighteen months to form one, but Belgium got on fine without it.

Question for all the UKers...I had this weirdd dream where we lived in a parallel universe where David Bowie didn't do a Bond song and Sam Smith got nominated for an Oscar for one ... oh wait ... damn!
Did David Bowie have a lot of respect over there? I ask because of the fact he never did a Bond and he seemed to get shunned at the Olympics. I was hoping he'd do Heroes at the opening ceremonies.
Or is it just a matter of living in the Beatles shadow?

He didn't do those things because he didn't want to. There was a whole Bowie section at the Olympics opening ceremony; he just wasn't there himself. His final live performance had been six years before that. Famously they wanted him for the villain in A View To A Kill but he didn't like Bond movies.
Likewise: McCartney has a knighthood and Bowie didn't because Bowie turned it down. He never lived in anyone's shadow.
