... but couldn´t this operatic, melancholic song sung by someone whose voice alternates between powerful and childlike be EXACTLY what the film will be about?

Just a thought...

Wait and see. It's much worse than you think.

Rumor has it Lana Del Rey was also in contention for Bond 24 title song:

If so, they were definitely aiming for a quiet (wimpy limp?) ballad.

Skyfall was about a disfigured bi-sexual lunatic, but that doesn't mean the theme should've been sung by Rupaul or the Phantom of the Opera.

Not that i wanted Del Rey, but her voice would've leant it mood, as opposed to Smith's wimpiness.

Del Rey is sultry, even when she's quiet and vulnerable. Her songs are saturated with and driven by sexual desire.

That's very different from Smith. There's no eroticism in "Writing's on the Wall."

"Skyfall" was about death and redemption, I´d say.

I'm fine with a vulnerable, romantic theme written from Bond's POV. But there's a difference between an older, experienced male encountering a love that has him questioning his life path and a depressed high schooler who just got dumped by his girlfriend. This sounds too much like the latter.

Indeed. But with themes that broad any number of songs and artist could fit the bill. I don't think that using such broad themes justifies Smith and his song, as again any number of songs and artist could fit. To justify Smith there's going to have to be far more specific reasons in Spectre - nothing as sweeping as death and redemption is going to convince the multitude of haters.

Personally i don't think there is a reason other than trying in vain to mimic the success of Adele's track and those unimaginative tactics worked out just as poorly for QoS.

I think SecretAgentFan's got it right. As much as I dislike this song and the lad singing it, I have this nagging suspicion that the track will complement the film perfectly - but not necessarily over the main titles.

This song is a lot better than you all realise just now. But more importantly, I think it will be a perfect fit for the film and for Craig's Bond in general. This is a future classic.

As for that cover by Alice Olivia - now that sounded terrible. I couldn't find this artist with a Google search, if that is her name, but it sounds from that clip like English isn't her first language.

Couldn´t have said it better, Harms. It´s just embarrassing. I won't be playing this song in my car, or even at home, that´s for sure. Ridiculous and embarrassing.

:) Yes, it is essentially the playground all over. And to be honest, we like it that way. If we´re all good sports, that is, not taking things to seriously ;)

I´ve seen people react offensively to the song and I dislike that sort of behavior. I, for one, don´t like the song at all. But I´ll draw the funny line just after the Zukovsky gag. That one was alright. Even though I´d cut the "Sam Smith, my mistress..." line. That was way too much. Not even infantile. Although a few days ago Smith posted a picture of himself trying to be the "best Bond girl he could" or something along those lines. Well, if you make fun about yourself, you open the proverbial can of worms. Not why I don´t like the song, BTW. It´s just a poor, embarrassing effort, as far as I´m concerned.

As I said before, while this is evidently a very controversial entry the ones who don't like it are probably more vocal about it. While its fans just buy.

The one thing I would like to know is, did Smith get the job before he even handed in a demo? I somehow get the feeling his contract may have been already signed when he sat down to write Writing's on the Wall.

My feeling is that he just got the gig (most certainly before he sat down to write it) purely because of his name and the fact he is very "flavour of the month" right now. His recent success with Disclosure on "Omen" and his hugely successful new album made him a shoe-in. He's male and British, which is the icing on the cake. The song will be a big hit, despite it being shite.

It would appear so:

"We literally wrote the song in like, 20 to 30 minutes. It was so quick," Smith told NPR. "And then I recorded the vocal, again, in probably like 15 to 20 minutes. And then the song was done. The vocal that you hear now on the song is the vocal from the demo, I never re-vocaled the song."

Sorry, but I struggle to believe everyone at Sony and Eon agreed this was the perfect song for one of their biggest films of the year.

I'd agree. Following on from Adele's success i think they succumbed to the pressure of ensuring the popularity of the X-Factor generation and thus made a business decision rather than an artistic decision.

Didn't Craig and Mendes praise Adele's song when it was released?  Have they done so for Smith's?

I don't think Craig and Mendes were out there praising Adele from day one of the song's release. They did as time passed.

On the other hand, Mendes has already praised WotW in an interview a few weeks ago.

I think from CR onwards the series has become more and more calculating.

The Bond franchise has always been calculating.

A friend of mine made this beautiful mashup with Michael Jackson's Earth Song

Hah!

As this demonstrates, the chorus of "Writing's on the Wall" works better as a bridge than as an actual chorus.
