But since Blu-Rays with proper transfer (not some shoddy DVD transfers as some are manufactured with by companies going for the quick buck) offer much better sound and visuals, it would be pointless to remain at DVD quality. You would not want to stay at VHS quality if you could have a DVD, right?

Skyfall was probably the finest DVD I've bought in the last 5 months that was spectacular in all the technical and visual departments. I see what you mean by shoddy transfers, (2004 Predator Collector's Edition) I guess I should start pricing now...

I wonder how many more stars they can add to these films before they become far too cluttered with characters (although that may have already happened). I wonder if Jovovich's role in this film would be one that she could potentially reprise in the "female Expendables" film that has cast Katee Sackhoff and Gina Carano in the past couple of months.
I also see from reading the above article that they've gotten a director for EXPENDABLES 3. I always knew that it probably wasn't going to happen when Stallone mentioned it in an interview a while back, but I was really hoping that they could find a way to bring Mel Gibson on to direct. I've enjoyed most of Gibson's directorial efforts, with the exception of APOCALYPTO which I just couldn't get into, and I'd really liked to have seen what he would have done with a straight-up action film.

I thought Mel Gidson would have been real exciting as well. Would have been real fun film for him compared to his normal work.

De Niro, Pfeiffer go back to the mob in THE FAMILY
Apparently, according to the article, Luc Besson's film MALAVITA will be released as THE FAMILY in the United States on September 20. The article contains quite a few quotes from Michelle Pfeiffer, De Niro's co-star in the film. We also get our first stills of the production:

The Wrap is reporting that Skydance and Annapurna Productions are in early negotiations with Paramount to distribute the next TERMINATOR film.
Full Article Below;
" The Wrap is reporting that Skydance and Annapurna Productions are in early negotiations with Paramount to distribute the next TERMINATOR film."
We all know that there is going to be another TERMINATOR film (despite McG's best efforts to kill the franchise) and now we know the studio that is likely to distribute it. The Wrap is reporting that Skydance and Annapurna Productions are in early negotiations with Paramount to distribute the next TERMINATOR film.Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to return and at one point Justin Lin was going to direct but had to drop out to complete FAST AND FURIOUS 6. That was when production was supposed to start earlier this year, but now that production has been pushed back and Lin has excluded himself from FAST AND FURIOUS 7, it is unknown if he will come back. He would certainly be a step up from Jonathan Mostow and McG.The producers have already hired Laeta Kalogridis (AVATAR) and Patrick Lussier (DRIVE ANGRY; DRACULA 2000) to script the fifth film that they now hope to have in production next year. The other thing that is interesting about this is that they only have until 2019 until all of the rights of the franchise revert back to James Cameron. Are they going to try to get multiple films out in that time? Are they going to give us the big, grand finale we all want?I wonder where they are even going to go with this fifth film and how they are going to work Schwarzenegger back into it. If they were smart, they would create a multi-film arc that would be the definitive end to the war between man and machines. It sounded like McG tried to do this, but he failed so miserably in the execution of the first film that it killed any hope of continuing in his vision. (I still find it amazing that he was able to get a bad performance out of Christian Bale.)I don't really know what to expect with this. On one hand TERMINATOR 2 is one of the films I have watched the most in my life and I have always had a deep love for the franchise and mythology that Cameron created. On the other hand, I was so damn disappointed in TERMINATOR SALVATION that I was ready to give up on the franchise altogether. It seems as though Cameron is the only one who knows how to get a good film out of this franchise.

I'm comfortable with this. Annapurna Productions has put out some fine films (Zero Dark Thirty, Killing Them Softly, The Master), just getting the right script and director, which of course I have faith in.

In other news, the first trailer for 300: Rise Of An Empire came out. Will pass on it. Looks even more over the top with more Slo-Mo, and ridiculousness, not to mention the ever so flat Eva Green is in it. Still think they should of left the original alone. That's Hollywood for ya.
I know where I'll be on 03/07/14, at home...

I can't say that I'm as enthusiastic as I once was about the film either after having just watched the new trailer on Youtube. Given that the studio has moved the film from a release date of this summer all the way back to March of next year (and doing this within two months of its release date), one has to wonder if the studio doesn't think much of the film either.

Absolutely. Also sequels/prequels should not change the creative team, nor be released too many years apart from the original. Two years is probably the maximum.

I'll say as a lover of the Greek myths and that sword-sandal style of film, and as I enjoyed both the recent 'Clash' and 'Wrath' of those titans, and the first '300' film, I'll check this out on DVD I think. Just looks more of the same forumla if you loved the first film, it will give you louder, bigger thrills in this follow up.
Eva Green is always a pleasure to see in any role, and the action looks majestically slo-mo nonsense, but that's half the fun I think!

You guys are nuts. 300: Rise of an Empire looks fantastic. Sure it's more of the same, but isn't that what all sequels are? Man of Steel is really just Nolan's Batman with Clark Kent in lieu of Bruce Wayne. Besides, Eva Green is in it and that's a win right there. Speaking of Man of Steel, it currently sits at 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic. I will be staying away from this one.

Most of the time, sequels try to be different, this one isn't. Eva Green couldn't act her way out of a paper bag, and Casino Royale is the only film I will ever be able to stomach with her. As for Man Of Steel, I don't listen to Rotten Tomatoes (The Purge has a low score on there, but I'm still seeing it.) or critics, but when the reviews start stating the same thing, I could only imagine that they must be right and that the film really is what they stated. Though of course you should always see it to judge for yourself, I'm in no rush to see this at all.

I don't put much creed into reviewers either. The Punisher and Punisher: War Zone sit at 29% and 27% respectively on RT and I love both films. I wasn't planning on seeing Man of Steel until it came out on DVD anyway.

George Lucas agreed that massive changes are afoot, including film exhibition morphing somewhat into a Broadway play model, whereby fewer movies are released, they stay in theaters for a year and ticket prices are much higher. His prediction prompted Spielberg to recall that his 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial stayed in theaters for a year and four months.

Schwarzenegger Confirmed For EXPENDABLES 3!!
This comes as no particular surprise, but Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed his appearance in the third EXPENDABLES film - he says he'll begin filming in August. This per TheArnoldFans website. While some of the film's casting doesn't appear to be finalized at this time, it's looking like Schwarzenegger will be joining Mel Gibson, Milla Jovovich, Wesley Snipes, Nicolas Cage, and possibly Jackie Chan - all of whom are being added into the returning mix of established franchie regulars (Stallone, etc).Patrick Hughes (RED HILL) will direct this time around. Look for EX3 Summer 2014.

Steven Spielberg on Wednesday predicted an "implosion" in the film industry is inevitable, whereby a half dozen or so $250 million movies flop at the box office and alter the industry forever. What comes next -- or even before then -- will be price variances at movie theaters, where "you're gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you're probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln." He also said that Lincoln came "this close" to being an HBO movie instead of a theatrical release.
I could see something like that happening, and I'd also be very interested to see how that would ultimately affect the cinema industry. I can't imagine that people would shell out $25 in nearly the same numbers that they currently do to see some of these blockbusters. At current prices, you're looking at, if you order something at the concession stand like say a medium popcorn and a drink, somewhere around $40 for a single person to go to the cinema. That's just not happening in the same numbers that are currently attending the cinemas. I'd actually think that they'd see the grosses for these movies stay relatively the same or maybe increase by a much smaller margin than I think the studios would be expecting.
If they're going to potentially charge $25 for a single movie ticket, I wonder if that would hasten the march towards a simultaneous theatrical and On Demand release of these types of films. That's something that's been going on for a while now for much smaller movies, and something that I've been enjoying on sites like Amazon, and it could potentially help the studios make a bit more money if things were driven to the climate that Spielberg and Lucas mention in the article. I sure wouldn't pay $25 to go sit in a theater full of brats who do nothing but talk and play with their cell phones during the movie, but I might be inclined to pay $25 to rent a major film on the day of its theatrical release and watch it in the comfort of my own home.

Great news. I see that they couldn't get him to direct the film, but at least Stallone got Mel Gibson to be involved in The Expendables 3 in some capacity. I still haven't seen the second one (and didn't really enjoy the first all that much, to be honest) but if they're adding Schwarzenegger (I'm assuming he's got a bigger part here than his previous cameo), Gibson, Snipes, and Cage to the mix, I might have to give this one a chance.

To be honest, I didn't enjoy The Expendables either. I haven't seen The Expendables 2, and probably won't, but the involvement of Mel Gibson and Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Expendables 3 will be enough to get me to give it a viewing when it arrives on Blu-ray.

Same here.
I was interested in the first film, having grown up in the 80´s and being fond of certain Stallone films of that era. But the first film left me absolutely cold, with a story that was barely there. I did not even see the second film - but since I enjoy Mel Gibson´s work (and find his life story tragic) the third film might persuade me to take a look.

with a story that was barely there.
That was my issue with The Expendables as well. From what I remember, the finale of the film was reasonably entertaining, but the story was almost nonexistent, and the film was leaning more on its star power and some of its cameos in order to win audiences over.
With regards to Mel Gibson, I'm still disappointed that he's not directing The Expendables 3. I know that he's more interested in directing those big, epic scale historical dramas that he is so good at doing, but I'd really just like, for once, to see him direct a straight-up action film. He's had so much experience over the years starring in them that I would have to think that he's got some ideas as to how he'd go about making something within the genre his own. It's also rare, I think, to have an action star who is also such a good director, and there's the potential there for him to maybe offer something new to the genre that the typical studio hacks that the studios like to put in charge of these types of films can't bring to the table.

So Fox has dropped a ton of release date news onto our lap today according to Box Office Mojo:
INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 has been dated for July 3, 2015. It is still unknown if Will Smith will be returning but Roland Emmerich will be returning to direct.ASSASSIN’S CREED has not surprisingly been pushed out of May 2015 to June 19, 2015. This is probably to avoid STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and THE AVENGERS 2.DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST have switched release dates. DAWN will now hit on July 18, 2014 and DAYS OF FUTURE PAST will now be released on May 23, 2014Nothing too surprising here, but I guess this means INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 is officially a go almost 20 years after the original. Roland Emmerich has already talked about what the sequel would be like and it is supposed to lead into a third film.I think we all assumed that Fox was going to move ASSASSIN’S CREED as May 2015 is going to probably be the highest grossing month of all time with THE AVENGERS 2 and STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. I am not sure why DAWN and X-MEN switched spots though so speculate away.
New Set Photos of 1970's Wolverine from X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST!
According to what appears to be a casting breakdown, Bad Robot, Lucasfilm and Disney are looking to fill seven new roles. The first three could be filled by the mid-1970s versions of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher:
1) Man Early 20s. Not classically handsome. He is witty and smart. Physically fit.2) Man Late 20s. Physically fit, handsome and confident.3) Woman late teens. Physically fit, independent and with a great sense of humor. Then there’s this:4) Man 65-75 Tough and opinionated.Alec Guiness was 63 in 1977.5) Man 30ish An intellectual. So they’re finally sticking a nerd in “Star Wars”? This is the only character among the seven who can be fat.6) Man 40s Physically fit, military type.A military type in a film with “Wars” in the title!7) Woman late teens. Tough, smart, physically fit.A female Biggs Darklighter to serve as BFF to character 3?
Here is some news to take with a grain of salt. According to WWE Examiner, the makers of TERMINATOR 5 are developing the film with a role for “Franchise Savior” Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in mind. Honestly, reading the story made me feel like it was more fan casting than anything else but crazier things have happened. Oh, and that’s not the craziest thing that is reported.
According to their sources, one of the ideas they have for the sequel is to make it a prequel that involves Sarah Connor’s parents and would be the first time a Terminator was sent back in time. They continued by saying this:Incredibly, Schwarzenegger may not play the role of a machine in the next film, but a potentially heroic human figure in or close to the Connor family. One theory is that Schwarzenegger's remarkable ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 1950s with antiquated weaponry by today's standards ultimately inspired the machines to develop a terminator in his likeness that was eventually sent to 1984 when Sarah Connor was first targeted for termination.Of course, this would contradict Schwarzenegger’s recent comments where he confirmed that he was indeed playing a Terminator. I would also think that they would already have the story locked down, considering they hired screenwriters six months ago and plan to be filming next January. It would be pretty surprising if they are still “throwing around” ideas as the article states. Would they really take a chance on a 40’s or 50’s setting for what is sure to be a summer blockbuster? It’s possible though, Johnson has jumped aboard the JOURNEY, FAST AND FURIOUS, and G.I. JOE franchises and to have the chance to do battle with Schwarzenegger has to be appealing to him. Not to mention the chance to ultimately take over the TERMINATOR franchise. We will find out soon enough if there is any merit to this rumor so stay tuned.
I'm not sure I would be on board with this.
FAST & FURIOUS NEWS;
Exclusive: Jason Statham Talks Fast & Furious 7
In case you're one of the eight people who hasn't seen Fast & Furious 6 yet, then let it be known that none other than cockney ass-kicker Jason Statham (Crank, The Expendables, The Transporter) cameos at the end as Ian Shaw, the brother of villain Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). He blows up Han (Sung Kang) in an event that ties into "Tokyo Drift," which featured a cameo from Vin Diesel looking to get some revenge for his dead buddy.
At a press day for his upcoming gritty indie flick Redemption, we got to ask Statham about the audience reaction to his appearance and the promise of what lies ahead for him and director James Wan on Fast & Furious 7.ComingSoon.net: Are you aware that your cameo in "Fast & Furious 6" is making people go BALLISTIC?Jason Statham: Is that right? They go nuts for that, yeah?CS: Is it gratifying to know that your mug for five seconds can bring the house down like that?Statham: It's fantastic. A lot of people have said it today and I'm like, "Really? Is everyone outside saying the same thing?" You must be number ten who said it today, they say it goes nuts. That's just the best news I've ever heard, it's fantastic to hear that!CS: In "Fast 7" you and James Wan are gonna be the new kids on the block. How do you infuse new energy in a series with that big of a number in the title?Statham: Yeah, it's daunting. I can't wait to sit with James. I just wrapped a movie over in Vegas, so I haven't had a chance to sit with James. We've had a couple phone calls, I'm dying to sit down with him and we're gonna figure something out. I'm really excited to be a part of that franchise.CS: Will you use what your onscreen brother Luke Evans did as a template or are you gonna be your own beast?Statham: I'm gonna do what I do. (laughs) Obviously we're trying to work out now what angle to come from. Some people say, "Wait, are you gonna be the villain? The guy who threatens the world and wants to blow everything up?" No. "What kind of an antagonist are you gonna be?" I'm not gonna say what I'm gonna be. The spoilers are the worst, when people already know what you're gonna do when you come and do it. "You told us last year that's what you was gonna do and so you did it." I'm gonna try and keep my mouth shut and not say what I'm gonna be doing.CS: Can you just signal me to let me know if you and Vin Diesel are gonna knock your bald heads together at some point? Is that gonna happen?Statham: (laughs) We'll have to wait and see. (laughs) I'm sure that's what they want me to say.CS: Is production of that going to interfere with "Expendables 3"?Statham: No, we've worked it out. I'm gonna be able to do the two back-to-back. Let's just say for the next seven weeks I'm gonna do nothing. I'm gonna lay on my back and do nothing, and then go to work. It's great to have two ensemble pieces where the weight's not on my shoulders, it's just gonna have a little fun and enjoy myself.
Fast and Furious 7 will begin new trilogy in continuing franchise
Star and producer of the 'Fast and Furious' franchise Vin Diesel, has said in an interview with Hitfix that 'Fast and Furious 7' is the beginning of a new trilogy. With Fast and Furious 6 currently doing big business in cinemas and 'Fast and Furious 7' set to begin shooting this summer in time for a 2014 release, fans will be revving their engines at the prospect of not one but three more films in the series.
Vin Diesel has been busy promoting the most recent film in the fancy car franchise and box office figures are promising to be huge for the sixth film. Diesel has been producing since 'Fast and Furious', the fourth in the series and will continue to shepherd the films in the future. The growth of Dom TorettoVin Diesel has spoken of the challenges he has faced in bringing his character Dom back to the big screen again and again for over a decade. He says that he has incorporated his own growth into the changing character of Dom, letting Vin Diesel affect the fictional Dom and letting an evolution of the character happen. With Diesel having his own child in 2008, the increasing importance of family in the latest 'Fast And Furious' film could be credited to Diesel's input and own life.Vin Diesel's creative inputDiesel has also emphasised the massive creative input he has put into the franchise, particularly since becoming a producer on the fourth film. He accuses the first three films of throwing continuity to the wind by not featuring Dom in '2 Fast 2 Furious' and not caring about the fates of any of the other characters except Brian. Diesel seems slightly critical of the original three films as a trilogy that does not connect properly, arguing that after he came on board as producer on 'Fast and Furious', that all changed and the following trilogy was mapped out. He demanded that the franchise would from the fourth film onwards be treated as a continuing saga. The third trilogyWith a new director comes a new phase and Diesel has admitted he always thinks of these films in trilogies. 'Fast and Furious 6' and 7 were almost filmed back to back but with all the location hopping, it was not deemed to be cost effective. Director since 'Tokyo Drift' Justin Lin, has bowed out in time for new director James Wan to steer the franchise through the continuing saga which Diesel promises has a mapped out story structure. The direction of this new trilogy is clear to him and fans will just have to wait to see where the next films take us at high speeds. With the Middle East and Tokyo confirmed as locations, 'Fast and Furious 7' is sure to bring more thrills and leave fans dribbling for further sequels.
