How about Jessica Paré as Gala Brand?

I agree with the posts on here that they should keep it to a relative unknown and preferably a European girl. They just have so much more panache and class.
It's not so much an American/European thing as much as European girls capturing the essence of a Bond girl. Other nationalities (and particularly Americans) seem to want to compete with Bond/be his equal in a Madonna (woman acting like men to seem liberated) like way - and they end up shedding their femininity and in the process making our hero seem like a wuss (Brosnan - Die Another Day alongside Helle Berry anyone?).
As an example, most of the Mad Men girls are American and they all exude class because they are still maintaining their femininity - it was expected for the era.
I'm sorry, but in a Bond movie, Bond is the man. Others are just window dressing and it's not appropriate to try to show up or compete with our hero - in fact, it's just plain disrespectful.
I agree that we need a blonde - but not a bimbo - it's been a while - I'm partial to the blonde behind the reception desk in the Oceans Club hotel in the Bahamas in Casino Royale - what a stunner. Or a Daniela Bianchi type.

I don't know it depends. I don't like Bond girls that do nothing, I like Bond girls that can take care of themselves in a way.

Did Britt Ekland capture the essence of the Bond girl?

No, she definitely did not. And neither did Tanya Roberts. But I liked Maryam D'Abo in The Living Daylights. She was smart and realistic without being a female Bond (Jinx, Wai Lin.) But it's been a long time since there has been a good blonde Bond lady (Miranda Frost was blonde, but a bad Bond girl!)
In the books, Teresa Bond was blonde, as was Vesper Lynd I think.

Agreed. Would be nice to have a decent blonde Bond girl again.

Not sure about Teresa (been a while since I've cracked open On Her Majesty's Secret Service), but Vesper had black hair in Fleming's Casino Royale.

You're right. "Her hair was very black ... ," Ch. V "The Girl from Headquarters." Curse my old age for not remembering!

Yvonne Strahovski... Attractive, Blonde, and attractive.

I've been petitioning her for years to be a Bond girl..... I mean who wouldn't want this in a Bond movie?

She's my top choice for the next Bond girl. Since Craig seems to be (overly, IMO) keen to reintroduce classic characters, Strahovski would be an ideal choice for an updated take on Mary Goodnight.

I'm not sure I would want Goodnight back. Maybe if they made her smarter and less whiny, but I'd rather Strahovski get her own character. And that, seems to be getting rare in the Craig era, actually has more than 6 minutes of screen time.

If Yvonne Strahovski was Mary Goodnight, does that mean she would also return in future movies?
I really hope she'll be considered for the part.

I don't know why, but when I Googleimaged Yvonne Strahowski (I had never heard of this person) the first thing I thought of was Mary Ann Russell in "From a View to a Kill". She had a fun, capable personality. Her expertise in handling Parisian traffic (bashed-up coachwork, no eye contact) was amusing and helpful to Bond. Perhaps if Goodnight were reintroduced along those lines (rather than as the bikinied Gawd-help-us of TMWTGG).
On the subject of hideously inappropriate names for female characters, I always thought "Legs Akimbo" would be a worth a giggle.
Ophelia Buttocks?
Pat McCann? (I think this is one of the joke names from "Car Talk")
With apologies,
Aziz

I agree, if they did reinvent Mary Goodnight, they would have to make her less whiny and actually do something..

Sure and while we're at it we can revive Dench and cast Taylor Swift as Bond's annoying, hypersexualized 15 year old stalker who writes a song about Bond dumping her for any number of stupid reasons.
