It's interesting that they called him Mallory, though. Since it's a name that's usually associated with British heroism.

Off the top of my head, the one Mallory I remember from the films is Captain Mallory, played by Gregory Peck, in The Guns of Navarone. Would you care to enlighten me about the ones related to British heroism RD? Thanks in advance.

George Mallory

Oh of course, I remember reading an article about the search for Mallory and Irvine. Thanks.

I´ve followed productions many many times, through many many years now, but this one is the first in which we have to really do some spy work and deduction. How fun.

I immediately thought of the Everest dude, and I'm not even British. Of course, a villain might be given an ironically noble name. Personally, I hope Fiennes turns out to be the new M, pure and simple, rather than a mephistophelean eminence grise. The last several Bond flms have gone rather overboard on the "MI6 traitor" angle.

If it is M's office at the end, how cool would it be if the last line were "Sit down, 007." Bond sinks into the usual chair, ready to hear his next assignment, and cut to end titles.

That could be quite decent. Would you have the new M remaining anonymous and unseen in the scene?

This is an cryptic statement by Mendes in the latest blog "There's something about the last part of the movie, which is deliberately, very conscioulsy, could have taken place in 1962."

That would be to good to be true, don't you think. CAUSE I LOVE IT!

What if M gives Bond his next assignment and mentions a guy named Ernst Stavro Blofeld at the very end of the movie? It would be a bit similar to Batman Begins but I think it could work. :)

That might be crossing the line, I don't know. That is just me though, if done well I guess.

That would be an interesting scene by far, if it were only the hands. How about just hands handing Bond a folder with the title of the next film on it? To much?

If there is a hint in Sam Mendes comment, I can't figure it out. He seems to be referring to Dr. No but how so?

It would totally fit with Mendes' comments about SKYFALL making a kind of "loop" with DR. NO.

Thanks Harms! I thought I’d imagined that, I talked to Vauxhall about this yesterday, but didn’t put anything here because I just wasn’t certain.

Plus, isn't there at second 56 in the blog a sample of old M's door in the background ?

Very well spotted – Thank you so much too. That certainly looks very much like a bit of the traditional, leather upholstered door to M’s office.

You can see M's door from Skyfall at the Barbican exhibition. They have two "old style" leather padded doors there. They are marked up as one from TSWLM and one from Skyfall. I was surprised to see the one labelled "Skyfall" as my assumption was it would be the modern style office we've seen in recent films. Makes sense now

Well done mate.

Now I'm interested about how they factor the old style of office into the story - Bond meeting a new M in classic style offices? Bond visiting the old SIS offices in Westminster? A classic redesign for the MI6 building? Quite a few possibilities.

I interpreted the "could have happened in 1962" comment as a reference to the plot, and more specifically to the absence of certain plot devices that have cropped up in recent years. Most Bond plots since the Brosnan era have depended heavily on computers and wireless technology. I could easily imagine the filmmakers constructing a plot that is deliberately low-tech, a plot that could plausibly have taken place in the technological context of the early sixties. This plot would provide an opportunity for Bond to recapitulate his original character and shake off the "remote-control Bond" dynamic.

Closing scene, 007 in M's office, both seated in antique leather chairs, gloomy day out the window, M offers 007 a brandy, declines.

M (Fiennes): Very well then, 007.
007 (Craig): I'll take a Heineken if you have it.
M: (Disgustingly leers at 007) Get hold of yourself, 007. You'll need the resources of your upbringing on this next one.
M: (Leans over to press the intercom button) Moneypenny, bring in the "Lamplight" file.
Moneypenny enters through the double-leather-bound doorway.
Moneypenny: (1st appearance in film) Here it is, sir. (Glances at 007 with interest, replied likewise by 007.)

I don't think it has to end right at a Dr. No reference for the whole idea to work. In fact, I think it would be better if it didn't address any one film in particular. I think a lot of us expect the film to end in a way where it sort of levels the franchise back off in familiar surroundings. I'm all for the modernizing of the Cold War era Bond. It can be done, Casino Royale was a perfect example. Global terrorism is every bit as topical as Cold War terrorism was 50 years ago.

Skyfall could end in the old familiar M room, which I think is a very cool idea. Have Bond walk in, a voice say "Moneypenny, bring me the file we were just discussing".... a female voice over an intercom; "right away"...and then an envelope is handed to 007.....

Posted Image

Q and Moneypenny don't have to be dropped back on us all at once. The slow build has been just fine. Bondian car and gambling in Casino Royale, proper gunbarrel in Quantum, now Q in Skyfall, and then Moneypenny in the fourth.

There are a few items from Skyfall. They don't give much away but just in case:

I simply can’t understand people thinking it might have something as mundane as a paperweight in it. Wouldn’t that be just so underwhelming?
Bond stands on a roof top overlooking London, with a serious expressing hands over an old china bulldog. The audience gasps!!!

Unless it's not just a paperweight.
