I'll start off with:
Vincent Cassell, I thought his performance in Mesrine was phenomenal, I think he can pull it off by playing a great sadistic villain.

Booyah happy someone else agrees with my Cassell suggestion. We should merge both mine and your threads
Happy as well. I think that would be a great idea as well!

Their a little similar in there build and look and very much so in the intensity of their performances - the way they bottle up the tension, seeming ready to explode at any moment (think EASTERN PROMISES and A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE).
To fully exploit this match-off, Viggo Mortensen would need to be in a similar role to Craig, perhaps a licensed agent of a foreign power pitted against Craig, such as Robert Shaw was pitted against Connery in FRWL.
Or, better IMO would be the return of QUANTUM, with their Number One (its Blofield figurehead) assigning their number one assassin Mortensen to finally eliminate Bond (a' la FRWL with a little MWTGG thrown in).
The symmetry would be nice in that QoS was Bond's trail of revenge against QUANTUM, whereas this would be QUANTUM's trail of revenge against Bond.

He's the new action star, and everything he does is done in a believeable way and I am convinced he would make a very physical and intellectual nemesis for James Bond...
...and he can act too, which is a bonus!!

Ulrich Matthes
He was considered for CR but had opt out because he was already contractually bound to a stage production in Berlin he would have had to pause for half a year. Impressive character actor with a number of haunting roles already in his career. You may have seen him as Goebbels in DOWNFALL. Another more widely seen production with him was THE NINTH DAY.

As far as who I'd like to see as a future villain, James Woods has always been kind of at the top of that list for me. I'd also like to see them go get Gina Carano to play either a henchwoman or the villain in an upcoming film.

I definitely would have liked to have seen Nicholson in a Bond film as well. I would have really liked to have seen him as Le Chiffre had they made Casino Royale prior to Craig coming on board.

James Woods is a great choice too. After seeing Gina Carano in Haywire, I kept thinking that she could be the Xenia Onatopp of possibly the Craig Era or future Era's. With her mixed martial arts background, I think she can pose as a legitimate threat to Bond.

I'd veto Steve Buscemi. One of the worst sins of the Brosnan-Craig era is that all the villains have been shrimpy little pasty guys. The villain has to be a physical threat. That's why Bardem was such good news.
OK you got me there. Dominic Green WAS a bit of a pasty weasel. But from a physical standpoint, most of Bond's villains weren't all that formidable; Scaramanga, Kananga maybe. Sanchez, Trevalian, possibly. But for the most part, the REAL physicll threat came from the minions & the henchmen. Goldfinger, Blofeld, Stromberg, Kamal Khan... all of these were just cranky old rich guys in tunics.
I agree Pussfeller. Le Chiffre only worked as a mentally equal villain for Bond, pushing him to the brink with the power in his hands but Greene, Medrano, Elvis...forgettable and not very threatening. Let's hope Bardem does us proud and gives us a REAL Bond villain.

I'd still like either Clint Eastwood or Jack Nicholson (toned down) - but I suspect time has passed mercilessly.
I cannot think of ONE film where Clint Eastwood ever played a villain, can you?

I've been thinking about possibly having someone like Jeremy Irons play a villain. I was very keen the hear at one point Kevin Spacey might join the film but couldn't. Spacey is another I'd like to see play a villain in the franchise.

Christian Bale
Use Bale's audio recording of him going off the set of Terminator Salvation. Should frighten Bond enough.

I wholeheartedly agree! If they ever bring back Quantum Matthes would great as its leader, a former East German spy with German-Greek ancestry who worked as a double agent in the 80's and went underground when the Wall fell, only to reappear as a private contractor working for people like Saddam Hussein, etc...
