"...expectations are at an all time high."

Well done Harkers.

Thank you! I'm was very proud of that one. Glad someone picked up on it. ;)

Boy, weren´t we just talking about that one yesterday? And here it is. Hah, EON does read all our posts, right?

October 22... hmm, that is kind of around the corner. Lovely to be able to listen to the score before seeing the movie. Just like in the old days of my moviegoing experience.

..... I would love the track previews to be revealed tomorrow.

That's right, EON. You heard.

Saw this on a soundtrack forum. If that picture of the scoring sessions is for real we can expect lots of brass and horn:

Not necessarily - that might be the entire brass section, for all we know! ;)

I kid. Encouraging to see Bond's horns there. I think my affinity for the wailing brass comes from being a trumpet player myself.

I hope we don't get 8 horns (or even 10, 12 or some other ridiculous number), which has become the default size in Hollywood action scores these days. Overkill if you ask me.

Barry's early Bonds did well enough with only 4 - close-miked and playing very loud.

I wonder, wasn't that decision more a result of the budget? Making four sound like six? Not that saving money was a big issue after GF...

Possibly, but it was also the standard number for almost all film scores at that time, till the late 70s and 80s. 4 is still is the normal number for a symphony orchestra, though some of the larger works in the repertoire require 6 0r 8. The only real Hollywood exceptions in those days were some of Bernard Herrmann's (the Harryhausen scores like MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS - plus ON DANGEROUS GROUND, CAPE FEAR and the rejected TORN CURTAIN) and Alex North's sword-and-sandal epics (SPARTACUS, CLEOPATRA, plus the later DRAGONSLAYER), but those were for a strictly colouristic effect. Warped ensembles to create a unique tone pallet that would be feasible under a studio budget, but impractical in the world of concert music. It was never done out of rote like it is today.

I think the big turning point was after STAR WARS (which used 6) with the rise of surround sound, and the subsequent arms race between the sound effects track and music (with no winners). The reason why the standard number of horns is now 6-8 or more, with 5 or more trombones, is partly due to the excessive wall of sound (particularly in the sub-bass region) in contemporary action films.

The habit of stacking layers upon layers, characteristic of composing with a MIDI keyboard, sequencer and sample library, where the sky's the limit - might also be a reason.

Either way, something needs to change.

Interesting, I didn't know this (though I now remember the appearance of large additional speakers in theatres when the 'sensurround'-thingy became state-of-the-art). I alway assumed when Williams used the London Symphony Orchestra it was just natural to have the largest possible number to blow people from their seats. Never occurred to me it was to compete with the sound effects.

I extracted the Audio Channel from the Turkey Videoblog only with the music (no sfx, no dialogue) from the begining. Can we say this is indeed the first snippet of the Skyfall soundtrack?

Thanks for this: that man's talent is magical.

I didn't know that about ET. I've heard that piece played live by the LSO a couple of times and it's an amazing bit of music.

Any word on the US release date for the soundtrack?

I don't see a listing on Amazon for it yet.

There's also a new Best of Bond cd collection coming as well. There's a post on this one in the music section of the forums.

Hope not. If Arnold's accused of being 'generic', that snippet is 1000x more so.

Agree Matt, that clip was as generic as they come - I hope it was sourced from a media library and not for the film.

In all likelihood, it was. They've been recording the score for barely more than week. No such precedent for using the score in videoblogs this early, anyway. The first QOS score snippets we heard was in Arnold's dedicated video blog that came out - I believe - sometime right near the end, IE October-ish.

Sounds incredibly generic, like David Arnold type stuff that you might hear in Die Another Day...

Could the background music on this site be from Skyfall? It sounds very good regardless from where it's from. It doesn't really sound like your usual generic lobby music. It sounds like something taken straight off an OST.

Wow. That does sound like it could be Newman.

In fact, it sounds almost exactly what the high end of the range of my expectations for a "Thomas Newman Bond score" would be. It's like the spirit of John Barry + the spirit of David Arnold + Thomas Newman's skill for depth and ambience.

Wow, I like the sound of that. Richly textured and evocative, with judicious (non-blaring) use of brass. There's a definite Turkish quality to the instrumentation. If this is indeed from Newman's score, then I guess we can stop worrying about weaksauce "tinkly piano".

Exactly, it's sounds like the conventional Bond sound we've been getting for the past while, with a touch of Newman.

"Weaksauce tinkly piano." Brilliant. Never in my life have I heard a composer's work reduced to such a hilariously perfect description. ;)

I kid. He's amazing, actually. ("JUST NOT FOR BOND!" - Me, every day, up until now).

I honestly can't stop listening to this new piece. It's just freakishly interesting. There's so many different things going on. The opening sounds like it could be from Serra's GoldenEye, but in a good way, and then it's like an expansion of "Inside Man" from QOS, which was easily my favourite track from that entire score. Plus, some definite hints of the Bond theme!

If this is Newman's work and a good indicator of the score he's turned in for Skyfall, consider all my fears laid to rest.

I love it. I was fearing they would go for a very classic style, so it's great to hear it sounds very Arnold-esque but with a lot of Newman's sound as well.
