I agree JimmyBond, I have seen flickers of humour in Craig over the last two films, and know he can pull off a good pun easily without it sounding too scripted or un-natural.

If anything I thought he was doing great with the little lines here and there, the cheeky mannerisms of 007. Hopefully the script will give him more ammo, and we can have yet more of that hinted Daniel Craig-007 wit...or at least half of it.

(NEVER understood the point of that line in 'Die Another Day'...sorry, off topic slightly!)

Sorry to stay off topic - but it's just for one more post and I can't resist bashing DAD.

DAD is full of such clangers - “As they say in fencing, what’s the point?”
Umm, no they don’t, that’s just something people say, generally.

“Mr Kil, now there’s a name to die for.” – Umm, the script writers have only called him that so Bond can say that. It’s jam-packed with patronising rubbish that’s an insult to the audiences’ intelligence. Even if said audience was entirely made-up of subnormal 8-year-olds.

You're quite right on these points. I watched DAD about a year ago for this first time in several years and cringed repeatedly. My wife, who has seen very few Bond films, couldn't believe how cheesy it sounded and made fun of me for liking these movies. Thankfully, she's been able to enjoy CR, QOS, and even FRWL, so she understands that the Bond films can come in different "flavours."

Now if only I had an awesome Skyfall image to post.... Back to you guys!

Q was cleverly calling Bond a "half-wit," or in other words an idiot.

Yes, I understand what it’s intended to say. Trouble is, it’s not particularly witty itself – perhaps half-witty.

I was 15 when DAD came out, and at the time i loved it. Alas, as i got older i saw what a cringe-worthy film it was. However, Cleese's delivery of the 'half wit' line is probably the best thing about it.

Saying that i think the "she's seasick" line in QOS isn't delivered well by Craig, so i'm hoping Mendes gets the humour right in SF.

..what a nit-wit...I've disjointed a thread, and brought bashing against 'DAD' when the quote came from 'The World Is Not Enough', not 'Die Another Day'! Agh...sorry everyone!

Nice work to bring that clanger back to 'Skyfall' guys, good one!

But yes...Craig delivers the lines perfect, for the humour I think Bond should/want to emit, but it does depend on the scripted line and the situation it's in for it to really work. I wont' say no to the humour though, I mean we can moan about it but looking back at, say, the Roger Moore era, we all secretly love the puns, even Connery and Dalton etc had them.

It's part of the legacy after all I guess!

CR and QoS are slightly marred (and there are very few things that I don’t like about Craig in both) by the occasional line that is delivered (and placed) as if it’s intended to be a joke, but could not possibly be. I find it quite bamboozling. “She’s seasick!” - “Welcome to my home!” - "It’s time to get out!”

The placement in the chain of events and Craig’s delivery, all says, “time for a joke” - but nobody could call the above, (and other similar lines) “jokes”.

This could easily be remedied, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this is what they mean by Skyfall being funny. ie getting shot of this sort of thing.

"It's time to get out,"...I don't know how that's supposed to be taken, pretty much how calm he says it after pretty much bombing around the quarry and the tunnels, he just reminds Mr.White what's next, as he's battered and bruised in that little trunk. I always see it as another example of Craig's Bond being quite sarcastic, cocky but witty.

In fact, most of Craig's "joke lines" arrive and I can't tell if they are meant to be puns/wit or simple observations he's making!

Yep, I understand what they were trying to do, but it’s just not good enough for where it fits into the film. Contrast it with the line that finishes the PTS in Goldfinger or “She’s just dead” from Thunderball.

This sort of cold, deadly sarcasm needs to be that good. And If the Skyfall script is as good (and funny) as we are told, I shall expect better (a lot better) than such lines in QoS and CR.

I see your point Shrublands, in that contrast....I see your point indeed! Good one.

PPK_19 - Thank you for that! That will be one EMPIRE I'm getting for the collection - Craig looks very, I dunno, harkens back to a classic '60s style pose, he looks very dapper! Has to be one of the first official character shots of Bond from 'Skyfall'? Thanks for posting!

Geographical wise, that must meen he's on the side of the Thames with Big Ben and HoP in front of him...MI5 is way off screen to his left, and MI6 is further down river to his right.

I wonder where this building is he's on..I've never been that far back behind the H.o.P before!

It's The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) it’s on Whitehall Place, just off Whitehall, where the original Scotland Yard was.

I just checked that JCRendle, great minds...!

Since they are a month ahead...this will be the June issue, I believe, as we're coming into May. That's still 4 months away so I bet if this normal cover features a smaller, alternate shot of Craig as Bond for the article, we will get that but I bet come September/October we will have a full blown 'Skyfall' special cover for non-subscribers, full Bond attire on the front!

We non-subscribers at the minute I bet will get either an ensemble cover, or that image, but smaller and with all the crap around it.

It's The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)

Thank you Shrublands!

Article insights, concerning plot/imagery:

"Bond's mission has taken him to Shanghai first, and there he gets a lead that the person he is looking for is in Macau. He has one slender lead and it takes him to a casino on a lake. Its a very transitional piece you're seeing tonight. It's just an arrival."

Empire nips inside a dark Gazebo where a huge plasma high-def screen monitor displays the view through Deakins' lens, as Bond stands at the entrance to the Casino, dead centre: "This is definitely the best-looking, most painterly few seconds of Bond that Empire has ever seen."

"Bond is back from the dead" , casino creator Dennis Gassner says, somewhat cryptically. He adds "This whole film is about illusion."

Empire makes an educated guess, from what they have seen during various set visits in February and April, that "Silva's MO has something to do with computers and the control of information".

Lastly, Mendes assures us that Skyfall will see 007 "physically pushing himself".

So there it is. A few insights from the article, make of it what you will!

Here's the cover photo again, i've taken a better picture and touched it up a bit with photoshop:

Goodness me PPK - just those few lines made my heart skip a beat of how this film will look! I think we really are going to be in for a tremendous Bond film, and I really hope EON market this big style, because it could eclipse 'Casino Royale' and be Craig's best Bond yet!

And... "This is definitely the best-looking, most painterly few seconds of Bond that Empire has ever seen.." - From Empire, that's a pretty big wow!

"Bond is back from the dead" , casino creator Dennis Gassner says, somewhat cryptically. He adds "This whole film is about illusion." - You can't GET any more cryptic than this and what this ties into the plot / characters!

Fantastic read, I'll have to check this out in print myself. Many thanks again!

No probs, Thecasinoroyale. They actually described Bond's attire a bit too: " Guarding the entrance of Skyfall's Golden Dragon Casino, are a pair of gigantic Chinese dragon heads, lion-mouths petrified into a permanent roar, eyes popping wildly...Standing aboard a small boat, punted gently through the archway, between the dragons and toward the steps is Daniel Craig as 007: tight lips pensive, blue eyes wary and glistening hard.

"A Tom Ford Tuxedo is pulled taut over Craig's honed frame. Its small lapels and '60's line subtly recall the character's mythic-historical homeland. His hair, once such a source of Bond-not-blonde fan outrage, is cropped short and immaculate. The fireworks crackle behind him, but his attention never wavers, concentrating hard on the task in hand, on the meeting that awaits him ahead, within."

Thanks, PPK.

Looks like Bond is in a potting shed in the one with the machine gun (most likely that outbuilding where Bond holds Kincade at gunpoint). That might be where Kincade's stockpile of weapons is being kept.
