Great pics SKYFALL. I don't know. I get the feeling this is going to be one of those movies that is either really good or is going to really disappoint. At least for me I suppose. I'm kind of an old school Trek fan. I see potential in this new series, but I am not expecting anything.

Early reviews for the new Star Trek game are scathing. Definitely not a good sign.

Hmm, I've not seen any bad reviews! The only "bad" thing I've read is the 3rd act is a little under-cooked, but that doesn't bother me if the rest is still well-done.

IGN gave it a 4.2. Metacritic currently has it at 45 out of a 100 for critic reviews and an abysmal 2.7 for user reviews.

Strange. When I log on metacritic, there is no user review (as it should be since the film does not open for about two weeks) and only the Total Film review which is considered to be 80 percent in favor.

The IGN review that he's talking about is for the videogame tie-in.

The video game review?? And there can't be user reviews legit yet as there has only been the Australian premier! I reckon their anti-Trekkies giving it a bad name.

In all fairness, he never did claim that it was the film that was getting scathing reviews ;)  :

Early reviews for the new Star Trek game are scathing. Definitely not a good sign.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if Star Trek Into Darkness ended up getting scathing reviews.  Much like Abrams' first film, it looks dreadful.

Oh, boy. Do not search for reviews for "Star Trek Into Darkness" unless you want to be bombarded by major spoilers. I was too weak to stop reading. Damn.

However, the revealing infos sound extremely exciting. And the film itself promises to satisfy those who liked the first Abrams-Star Trek. If you did not like that, you won´t like this one. That´s fair, I guess, and no surprise.

Aww no, sorry SAF - has it pretty much ruined things for you?! I was about to look for some reviews and see what's going on, but after that I ain't doing anything like that!

I've got just over a week to hold off on a film I know nothing about but what I've been fed by TV spots, posters and trailers.

The Empire review is not spoiler-y and very good: http://www.empireonl....asp?FID=136708

Benedict Cumberbatch: I want my Daniel Craig moment!

The Sherlock star reveals his ambition for a James Bond-style role

BRITISH actor Benedict Cumberbatch is the toast of Hollywood with a starring turn in new movie Star Trek Into Darkness - and now he's set his sights on a James Bond-style role.

The hugely popular Sherlock star tells TV Magazine that stacking on muscle for his role as villainous John Harrison in the sci-fi film has given him the taste for a Daniel Craig-type gig.

TV Magazine... Saturday 4 May 2013
"Star Trek is, to all intents and purposes, an action movie as much as it is a sci-fi drama, so that involved a hell of a lot of training and long hours,” he says. “I had to put weight on, so I’d eat 4,000 calories a day. I went up four suit sizes at one point – it was hard work but a lot of fun.
“I’d love to transform my body into some ridiculous war machine. I want to run around a desert shooting guns at aliens and looking as if I barely have to take a breath.
“I would love to do all that s***. I definitely want my Daniel Craig moment!”
For now, he's more than happy with roles in two Hobbit sequels and as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate - oh, and not to mention the return of THAT character we know and love Benedict for.
“You’re in for an absolute stonker of a resurrection [after the ‘death’ of Sherlock last series],” teases Benedict, who will return to our screens as the Baker Street detective in late 2013 and has committed already to a fourth series. “It’s going to be a treat...”

I know for a fact if Benedict is as ground-breaking as he seems in the trailers, I would CERTAINLY welcome him in the James Bond universe!

I'm happy to say I've seen the film, this morning at the 00.01 showing at my local cinema and I was blown away - literally!

So happy I stayed spoiler free....wow!

"So, shall we begin?"

Well, this was a film I've been excited for the last couple of months. Lots of speculation, fantastic trailers and the promise of something bigger than the first film back in 2009 with possible links to the original movies.

If you REALLY want to know the answers to the big questions, just click the spoiler...

Is Benedict Cumberbatch playing Khan?

Spoiler

Do we have Tribbles in the film?

Spoiler

Will one of the USS Enterprise crew die?

Spoiler

Is it a remake of 'Wrath Of Khan'?

Spoiler

Are the Kingons back?

Spoiler

Do we have lots of lens flare?

Spoiler

All these questions were answered and more, and I'm glad I didn't read spoiler reviews so everything was fresh and exciting on presentation. I'll have to watch it again to take it all in, as this review is going to be tricky with so much going through my head, and I will not divulge any spoilers.

From a blistering opening pre-title sequence like the first film, we are thrown right back into the company of our crew who have obviously used the time to develop their skills and become a real team. Kirk (Chris Pine), "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), "Scotty" (Simon Pegg), Uhura (Zoe Saldana, and Spock (Zachary Quinto) are all on top form and even more like their original incarnations. It's great to see and hear them together and adds a real sense of unity to the film.

With stronger tones of real-life events, it's not long before a terrorist bomb is detonated in a busy London city, which lasts only a few secons but looks haunting and sounds scarily real. Enter John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), a former Starfleet special-ops officer with a score to settle with the top brass, namely Starfleet Admiral Marcus (RoboCop Peter Weller). As with most narratives, innocent lives are lost and lines are crossed and eventually it falls to Captain Kirk and his crew to seek out Harrison and bring him in before more lives are lost.

From the eerie plantet Kronos where a brilliant action sequence takes placs, straight through to a good middle portion of the film set in and around the Enterprise and deep space, leading to a rather subdue finale back on Earth, the film doesn't let you go. It throws shocks, laughs and memorable character development, mostly from Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Sulu and Harrison (or so I felt anyway). The crew still learn lessons along the way and how to interact with eachother when the pressure is on, but that's part of the charm of taking the journey into darkness with them.

It reminded me of the poker sequence in 'Casino Royale' during the sequences in the Enterprise as they focused on the crew working together to battle the enemy whilst keeping the ship operational and didn't need to do anything else except that, and was a really good sequence focusing on something that may sound boring on paper but is full of tension, emotion and action on screen.

With sexy support from Alice Eve as weapons expert Carol Marcus, it's a far greater cast than the first film, and it's the easiest thing to say that Cumberbatch makes Eric Bana's Nero from the first film totally forgettable. He's a one-man army, he's clever, he's brutal and he's evil. He reels you in along with Kirk and the crew and then suddenly lets rip and doesn't let you go until the end. A truly epic performance with the best villainous voice heard on screen for years!

With moments that you really don't see coming, that makes the experience even better as you travel across the stars with a Starship family you care for and want to succeed, and with room open for a third film, I really hope they make it so because this builds on what worked from the first film, amplifies it and really hits you hard with thrills, visually stunning seqences (the falling Starfleet ships to Earth is scarily realistic) and exceptional characters and story.

Star Trek Into Darkness- ****1/2

While not as good as 2009's film, Into Darkness builds upon the mythos created by Abrams to craft a truly unforgettable adventure. As pointed out by tcr, I can't go too far into detail without revealing MAJOR spoilers, but suffice to say this one was one helluva ride. From a rivetting opening set piece rivaling the Pierce Brosnan PTS's for craziness, the Enterprise crew are thrust into a galaxial manhunt after a terrorist attack in London. Committed by none other than Mickey Smith (Noel Clarke). Apparently, the TARDIS really had a negative effect on him!

Following this, the Enterprise is sent to the other end of the galaxy to track down John Harrison, played insatiably by Benedict Cumberbatch. What ensues is a deadly game of cat and mouse between Harrison and Kirk until the very end.

The story is great and really picks up at about the half way point. Unfortunately, the first half drags somewhat making the film feel slightly inferior to its predecessor. The cast is beyond excellent. Pine and Quinto really come into their own as Kirk and Spock and Simon Pegg is every bit as good as Scotty as he was in the previous film. As already stated, Cumberbatch steals the show. His performance blows Eric Bana's out of the water. John Harrison is cerebral and downright scary. Basically, the Trek version of Silva. Alice Eve is as lovely as always, however, she just doesn't have enough screen time. This is a problem with Chekov, Sulu, Bones and Uhura (not quite as much) as well.

Overall, Abrams has crafted one heck of a thriller and a worthy successor to the 2009 reboot. I just hope that Abrams' work on Star Wars 7 doesn't derail his plans for a third Trek.

Ditto for me.  Just came back from a 2nd viewing (this time in 2D) and picked up a few little things (like a cut on Kirk's face in the shape of the Federation logo!)  And the foreshadowing is clearer when you know where the story is going.
