Good eye Professor! I'm going to try this again soon, in 2D, to pick up things I didn't in 3D.  :D

Non Spoiler Review of Into Darkness

This was a very fast paced movie, and I for one was pleased to see the tempo be fast, as it was in the previous film. Now I was annoyed by Kirk's demotion then subsequent promotion after John Harrison's attack. Also if you read the comics and the Countdown Into Darkness comic you already know how McCoy has the tribble and how Kirk got the ship he used on Kronos, so I really enjoyed that since Star Trek is the only comic I get on a monthly basis. I think the best way is to just list some characters and give a few tidbits:

Admiral Marcus-I thought Peter Weller would play Bob April but I really liked his portrayal (also thought he might be a clone of Paxton from Enterprise too). Very chilling, very evil person. His set up was a good pay off, and you knew he would have a brief role once you learned of his connection to Harrison, but still a good performance

Chris Pike-It was nice to see Bruce Greenwood back.

Kirk-My biggest knock on Kirk is the lack of maturity, but at the end we start to see the James Tiberius Kirk we grew up with. His journey is what the movie is really about IMO, and hopefully in the comics we get to see that legend grow. But getting back to the film he had the 2 scenes that to me held back the movie. First was the bed scene with the same aliens as Lt M'Ress the Caitians. I liked their new more human look but it really made no sense. Neither did him checking out Alice Eve getting undressed. So I have it as my screen saver, BUT (pun intended) it really had no effect on the movie or the plot. Kirk saving the ship was a nice touch, but his @$$ should've been on the bridge managing the crisis. Turning command over to Spock was a bad move, and it hurt his character.

Spock-I have liked the way Zachary Quinto has portrayed Spock, and if he is your favorite character then you will LOVE this film. Yes he and Uhura are still together, but its been strained, especially since the 8th issue of the comics. We saw a wide range of emotions from Spock, and he has begun to realize that Kirk views him as a friend, which makes his state at the end of the movie all the more human for him. Once again I came away impressed with the acting of Mr Quinto, but he did kinda upset me with the one phrase Spock never should utter. The end fight with Harrison was very good as well

Uhura-Yes she is now one of the big 3. Uhura is my 2nd favorite character behind Kirk, so I was pleased to see her do more than just say "Hailing Frequencies open sir.". In this she gets in on the action, and in the end helps Spock. The relationship with Spock is only touched on, but after the jaunt to Kronos things look good for her and Spock on the realtionship front. Uhura had a lot to do in this film, so as an Uhura fan I was happy to see this.

Scotty-after being comic relief (he is in this too) in the last film, Scotty shines in this. He stands up to Kirk and goes as far to leave (Thats why Chekov is a red shirt). But Scotty once again saves the day. His part in the movie is larger (like Sulu in the 2009) and serves as a moral compass of sorts. His interactions with Keenser definitely lighten up the mood of the film.

McCoy-Karl Urban is sadly underused, but he is the ladies man that Kirk isn't. Most of his interactions are with Carol, and while he flirts she seems to flirt back. I wish McCoy had a larger role like he did in the previous film.

Sulu and Chekov-I already gave away why Chekov is a red shirt, but its nice to see Sulu not be afraid of the center seat. Read issue 20 for their origin stories. BUt in the film, not much for them too do, but Chekov had more lines and Sulu is well on his way to learning to be a CO in the future.

Carol Marcus-I don't know if she and Kirk will hook up, but if you ask me, Bones might be David's baby daddy in this timeline. Kirk briefly flirts with her when they first meet and in the shuttle changing, so maybe she'll warm up to him. I liked her reasons for getting on board, and she plays a crucial role in standing up to her father.

John Harrison-Benedict Cumberbatch will be a big name actor in the US b/c of this movie. I was really impressed up until a certain point, but since the movie moves fast I didn't have time to dwell on that disappointment about his character. He wasn't a typical Trek baddie and you understand his motivations for his actions, as they mirror Kirk's.

Klingons-Yes you see them, including one without the helmet. And they look fraking awesome.

Now if only Hasbro could do a 3.75 inch line of action figures for this movie....then I would be thrilled!  But go see this movie!

Zachary Quinto says that the next Star Trek film is tentatively set to begin filming next year with Abrams hoping to direct again. It appears that Paramount realizes that Into Darkness may have suffered from disinterest based on the 4 year gap and they seem to be trying to rectify that for Trek 3 (or 13 depending on how you count). However, I don't know how Abrams will be able to direct it as Star Wars Ep. VII is slated to begin filming in early 2014 so this will be interesting to watch.

I am thinking that Paramount might want to complete with Star War who is a more popular franchise? so they could try to push for a 2015 release as well.....

I think that Paramount would be wise to avoid going up against STAR WARS this time around.  Regardless of how either franchise would fare in an even competition as to which is the more popular franchise, STAR WARS VII would win decisively if it were to go up against STAR TREK III in 2015, just based on the fact that the anticipation level for STAR WARS VII will be significantly higher amongst the general public.

As for Abrams, I don't see how he's going to have the time for both.  Hopefully he'll just concentrate on STAR WARS and leave STAR TREK to someone else to take over rather than trying to juggle both franchises.

Jar Jar Abrams will at least stay on Star Trek 3 as a producer I would imagine, like he did with Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. If he doesn't return to direct it might appear he jumped ship for Star Wars as well. The bigger question for me is if Abrams will also direct Star Wars Episode IIX and IX.

I wouldn't mind Abrams passing the director's chair to someone else for Trek 3/13. We might get less lens flares and someone who has more time to devote to the film. I believe he will stay on as producer, just not as director. As for going against Star Wars, I don't think that will be much of a factor for the sheer fact that 2015 is HEAVILY loaded with films already that Star Wars won't affect Trek near as much especially if Star Trek releases at a different part of the year.

Somehow I began watching THE NEXT GENERATION again recently - and boy, they really had some great episodes.  Patrick Stewart is amazing as Picard.

I was thinking just yesterday about watching some of these. Haven't seen them since they're original run.
