Think the Faulks press release leaked a little early as well. Nice to see The Guardian took it right down. Suggests it might have just been a mistake and not a deliberate embargo jump. I wouldn't have seen it if it wasn't for Mi6 copying and pasting the entire thing to their site -- and it showing up right there in the feed on the IFP main page.

Hardest part now is not talking about it.

It was in the Guardian I read it in. Didn't know it had hit Mi6 till much later - the Guardian page does seem to have vanished now.

Yes, seems the Guardian spilled the beans; probably manage their page on a low-costs basis and some overworked poor devil put it up prematurely without even realising what he/she did.

If true, Deaver makes sense though. Back before DMC we speculated the author would probably be someone from the Steel Dagger backlist and/or introductions to the originals (Deaver wrote Casino Royale's if I'm not mistaken?).

Seems IFP went back to seasoned genre veterans with this step. Deaver seems to have a his roots firmly in the crime field (no bad thing!), but also would have proven himself capabable of espionage/intrigue/political thriller with Garden of Beasts (his Steel Dagger Award), which funnily enough I just ordered these days.

Must be a psychic. Or is psycho the word I'm looking for...?

Interesting that they've gone back to 'present day' continuation novels. Given the push to promote "Flemings Bond" a couple of years back I expected another period novel.

Do we thin it'll continue on from the Gardner/Benson books, or start a fresh present day continuity?

I realise Devil may Care was a commercial success - but do you reckon the critical response has something to do with this?

DMC comes at the bottom of many fans' lists, me included. But most buyers and readers weren't exactly hardcore fans like us, so they just got the equivalent of a poor spoof and didn't mind at all.

DMC's real problem is that it didn't satisfy as a thriller, a pastiche or parody.

Deaver would suggest that at least the thriller game is up again with Bond.

Still, am not so happy about a contemporary setting.

Great to hear there'll be more; I too am not over the moon about a return to the present day- there's always a temptation to bring it close to the film series and I think IFP have been doing rather well by keeping their distance recently.
Great to hear we're getting more Bond, but it seems like a bit of step back after all of the innovation of the last few years to simply go back to hiring a (without being insulting- bit of a potboiling) writer to do a series of novels in the present day.

Still, at least he is actually a professional writer: better than some of their previous efforts at continuation 'authors'!

I understand why it's easier for a writer to set Bond in the present day from a research point of view but think Bond works better in his natural world laid out by Fleming. Thats why I got so excited about DMC and I wasnt let down. Thats not to say it cant or hasnt worked before. Gardner did an ample job of it, so we must give the new chap our support as the proof will be in the pudding if all this is true. Sounds like the man has the right CV for the job and I cant wait to read it. Exciting times!

Having quite a few Deaver novels in my bookcollection, he is one of the writers I do buy blindly with each new book, I must say I am very pleased about this news.

I'd prefer them to write three or four. Gives them a chance to get comfortable. Then get rid before they get bored.
