Maybe Bond doesnt smoke anymore...

You are absolutely correct with that point. Deaver will have him not smoking at all.

Well that's fair enough in this day and age, Bryce003 will be pissed about that though! I am not going to tell him.

Yes, let him find out for himself when he reads Deaver. B)

Oh my, what you've mentioned about what he's done with 'Penny, Mary and the others have me rather intrigued. Will we find out exactly what he said about them to you in this interview?

The biggest change is Bond himself.

So Bond will now be a woman then? Biggest change I can think of!

Did you find that he was excited about being a Bond writer? I hope he embraces it and is proud of it, unlike the last one seemed to be.

One of the first adult books he read, at age 8 or 9, was Moonraker. He is a huge fan of Fleming's work including his travelogue book Thrilling Cities. I don't want to give too much away from my interview but there will be some surprises that may shock some purest.

If I had to take a guess (hope that's okay), I'd say that Bond is no longer a "Cold War relic" and that he's been given an ordinary age span in conjunction with IFP's return to the modern period. Gardner and Benson used the floating timeline, but it's conceivable that another author would find it unwieldy, particularly as we move farther and farther away from the Cold War era.

No smoking makes perfect sense in this day and age. Wonder if Deaver will give Bond a different vice to fill the gap (though it's not necessary).

Will Bond drink tea?

Okay - my initial thought was that he was going to alter Bond's ethnicity from caucasian to something different, giving him an African, Indian or maybe even Arabic ethnicity.

Well you're not too far off from that guess.

I will be disappointed if thats true, very. It doesn't sound like Bond if you muck about with the heritage, confiscate his cigs, by all means. Hopefully your just teasing us with your snippets Shatterhand, unless IFP want more media coverage with the shock of Bonds heritage being mixed up a bit. A cheap trick that would be.

Hmmmm. Not too far off. So it's an almost but not quite. What could be almost but not quite a change of ethnicity - unless they've *gasp* made him American?

As Trident said, the guesswork just fuels the anticipation for the final work.

Aw, let's wait and see. There are a number of interesting things one could try, once certain artistic license is granted. I think of the 'one-shots' for the SPIROU AND FANTASIO comic series that has helped to bring new life to that old series. I'm certainly willing to give any attempt a chance. Perhaps it's just a change of perspective, a new focus on the character. Perhaps this Bond has married, but wishes he hadn't?

A change of ethnicity in another character, not necessarily Bond himself. Oh the suspense is killing me, I hope it last.

Oh, well that's alright. It wouldn't be Bond if he were changed, but I think the supporting cast are pretty much fair game. I can't imagine anyone would be TOO upset about an Asian Goodnight... Though I gather from your drumroll that it's something bigger than that. Seeing as Deaver seems very comfortable with an African-American voice (and earns praise for it), I'd guess that Righty's on the nose. A black Felix would also tie in nicely with the current films, the way the female M did in the Benson era.

Before you relieved that bit of tension (thank you!), I was afraid that he might be turning 007 into a Legacy character... so that it WOULD be in the same continuity as the original Fleming books, but with a new young agent (of potentially any ethnicity) having assumed the mantle of "007" and presumably even "James Bond" for the 21st century. I wouldn't be cool with that.

Anyway, can't wait for the interview! Sounds groundbreaking!

Maybe Bond is older and has to come out of retirement, or perhaps he's about to retire and has to train his replacement, or something like that. Maybe he quits MI6 and starts working for the CIA.

I'm a cynical person though, so I'm wondering why Deaver would disclose information about the book at all. I would think IFP would have instructed him to keep quiet about it. He didn't give anything away in the BBC radio interviews.

Good point, that definitely COULD still be the case. Bond as an older agent out of retirement or about to retire training a young black hero poised to take the lead in future novels. Hm. (Still, I kind of doubt it.)

I doubt Bond's become American or switched to the CIA though. Deaver did talk in his BBC interviews about what an Anglophile he is.

I guess we should be having this conversation in the new Deaver forum, though...

No smoking makes perfect sense in this day and age.

Agreed. I think this change is necessary. With all the facts on the table, people in this day and age know better, whereas people in 1953 did not.

But I have to admit, even though the consequences are not cool (seriously, what do you gain from it?), the image is undeniably cool. Bond’s introduction in Doctor No would not be what it is without the smoke.

Maybe Bond is older and has to come out of retirement, or perhaps he's about to retire and has to train his replacement, or something like that.

Ugh. I hope not. I’m tired of ‘the old gunslinger comes back for one last mission’ angle. Or Bond having to prove he still has the goods. Just give us an eternal Bond taking on a job. No emphasis on age or anything like that.

What I should have also said was, would they be good authors: Jeffery Archer, Robert Harris and Anthony Horowitz in writing a Bond novel.Or they wrong for it.

Jeffery Archer  B)

IFyou or anyone who don't know who is Jeffrey Archer. He the one who wrote novels like Shall We Tell the President, A Prisoner of Birth, A Matter of Honor, The Eleventh Commandment and Paths of Glory. But if it just the name wrong by putting the e before the r, then forget about it.
