Getting Bassey in would make it feel like pastiche. I really wouldn't want her to do it.

I see where you're coming from, but I think it's purely down to how good the song was. It wouldn't sound pastiche if it was just really good in it's own right.

I think just her presence, her name on a press release, would make it a pastiche.
It'd be like getting Roger Moore to play a villain. He could be great, but the baggage he brings would make for poor press.

It might also be difficult to find the right balance between singer and song then. Bassey everybody expects to deliver a certain sound, of course. The song itself would have to take the backseat to such expectations, would have to fall back on a generic version of The Bond Song™ and that would not help the performance either. It could easily turn out as a pointless exercise.

Shirley Bassey partly invented the The Bond Song™ with Goldfinger, to be fair to her. I don't see it as being at all equal to getting old actors into the film in cameos, because it'snot the same - the singer of the song exists outside the world Bond inhabits. I am just less of a pessimist, I think anything can be done well, and Thomas Newman is no noob or lacking class. Also, most of the Bond songs have been, in a way, pastiches of the Bassey sound. GE and TWINE most recently could easily have been written around Bassey and probably would have been better for it as it would have been more authentic.

Bassey has done a few songs in the series anyway.

But all of them written by John Barry. No Barry, no Bassey.

Listening to music off of my Zune, I came across The Heavy. British Band and I think they could do a great title song.

Y'know Shark, you're right. I think I posted one of there better songs, although How You Like Me Now is good, it's just overplayed now in Films and TV Shows.

I've always thought that the Red Army Choir should do something for the Bond franchise. I'm not thinking a main theme, but something like an end credit song or a diegetic piece incorporated into the plot. Perhaps Bond is stalking a foe during one of their performances, like the Tosca scene in QOS. The whole tongue-in-cheek retro Soviet vibe is perfect for Bond.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I always did think the Tosca scene was great, and it would be great to have something like that again, basically what you said.

Since most of you don't think any of them should sing a Bond title song,

Celine Dion
Mariah Carey
The Cranberries
Andrea Bocelli (a good singer don't know would it work with him)
Vanessa Williams
Phil Collins
The Who
The Rolling Stones
Bon Jovi
Evanescene
Robert Duncan
Chris Isaak
Harry Connick, Jr.
Sting
Eric Clapton
Gloria Estefan

What about any one of them,

Josh Groban
Diana Krall
Sarah Brightman

I suppose he'd create a bit of a buzz. But it's obviously going to be Adele.

They're going to have to start working on it quite early (or at least before the film score is composed), because Newman will have to incorporate the instrumental part of the song into his score.

If Adele doesn't do it for whatever reason and I can only think of one, which is money. I think Lady Gaga would be a safe bet for a plan B, I wonder how many and what performers have approached EON to do it.

If they couldn't afford Adele, there is no way that they'd manage to get GaGa. As for money being a factor, I don't think that would come in to it.

Eon seem to be trickling news out in a well thought out way. Weekly clapperboard updates, online videos, Teaser poster/trailer with Cannes. They know just the right time to release which information - it may be frustrating for fans, but it'll be worth the wait.

You also have to think about contracts, artists agents/management etc. They may have restrictions on when information can be released - incase something falls through (can look bad on them), negotiations between different companies for the rights etc.

Amy Winehouse was reportedly signed and ready for Quantum of Solace, and we know what happened there. They don't want to release information too soon as things are want to change.

I think there could be loads of factors: availability; not wanting to do it; contractual situations; the label not wanting her to do it etc.
I hope she does. I'm not a huge fan of hers or anything, but she does seem very right for it.

Chris Cornell solo is great (minus his last solo album) Chris Cornell in Soundgarden is great (their latest song "Live To Rise" is good) Chris Cornell in Audioslave is great! (Rage Against The Machine with a different tone and attitude and with Cornell) I would love to see Soundgarden do a song! Not only are they one of my favorites, but they truly have some great music and can pull off a song for Bond not just because Cornell has done it before, but because It can be a different approach to it. Something like that, I'm getting too carried away.

Well, as Soundgarden is back EON could choose them to do the new song. 'Live to Rise' is great, it would reflect somehow the mood and the dark side of Skyfall, even though their song was already used for 'The Avengers' ;)

I can't think of a previous time in Bond history when there has been such a general public consensus on who the singer should be. It is a happy coincidence that the biggest star in the music industry during the 50th anniversary is a female British balladeer.

If Adele can't/doesn't want to do it, then whoever does it is going to have the "second choice" stigma attached to him/her. Ask Tim Dalton how that worked out.

Well after seeing our submission for the embarrasing contest that is the Eurovision Song Contest, our UK singer shouldn't have been dragged into that mess as the song was utterly brilliant - hauntingly powerful and beautiful.

The male version of Shirley Bassey...ladies and gentlemen, for one legend to another...bring in Englebert Humperdinck for 'Skyfall'!!

We need someone new to sing the song over the titles so lets forget Shirley Bassey, Lady Gaga and Adele.

l still say it should be Ren Harvieu - she has a retro modern voice which would perfectly suit the tone that Skyfall would appear to be taking.

I agree. After Casino Royale and the very successful rebirth of the franchise & character, money isn't an issue the way it might have been in years passed. Quality seems to drive the films now (thank God). If they want Adele - and I very much hope they do - they'll get her. If it doesn't happen, I seriously doubt money will be the reason.

To me, having Adele do the title song is a sort of harmonic convergence. I really hope it happens.

As a 007 nerd since 1973, the soundtracks have been huge in my world. I'm never without several in my car, and listen to at least one weekly. That said, there have been several where I made a copy of the soundtrack specifically so that I could eliminate the title song (a-ha, Sheena Easton, Sheryl Crow, Garbage, Madonna, Jack White\Alicia Keys). I hope Skyfall doesn't become another one of those instances.
