Besides, imo, Muse is a way too americanized band for a Bond, and I'm just tired of that, I want a (very characteristically) bristish act for the next Bond theme. So I suggest Jarvis Cocker, Blur, Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, The Last Shadow Puppets or even Bowie (if he gets out of his supposed retirement).

historically Bond has usually used quite contemporary acts (Chris Cornell excepted! :) )

That is somewhat arguable... we have to add to this supposed exception: Louis Armstrong, Rita Coolidge, Gladys Knight, Tina Turner and Madonna; whom weren't particularly young when they recorded a Bond theme.

I think five out of twenty two makes it okay to say 'usually'.

Muse right now are too pretentious for Bond. They've been on a steady of incline of poserish self-indulgence since Supermassive Black Hole.

Depends how tongue-in-cheek you think that is. I don't think they take themselves entirely seriously.

I reckon a shortlist of credible and "relevant" artists would probably look something like this:

- Lady Gaga
- Muse
- Florence and the Machine
- The Killers
- Coldplay

Other previous favourites such as Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis appear to have gone a bit quiet, but plenty of time for that to change before 2012, I'm sure.

Florence is a pretty decent bet, actually. Yeah I could see that happening: a very clear, distinctive voice and a nicely credible yet popular artist. She did a Twilight song too.
I don't think Coldplay would be quite right, nor Gaga; no way.

Despite the costumes they're wearing, they're still taking themselves too damn seriously.

Smile for crying out loud.

Morrissey; British, and knows how to hammer a point home.

Keep him away from Arnold and we're onto a winner.

I would say none of the above.

The Bond in Fleming's book didn't strike me as being much of a music lover.

What's wrong with simply music and NO singing.

This pop band of the week thing is like...so 80's...

I'm pretty sold on the suggestion of Florence and the Machine. I'm not a massive fan of hers or anything, but she ticks all the boxes: very strong voice, a penchant for the dramatic; very much of the now; credible; popular and even breaking through in the US (I think).

In a performance on an Italian television music show called Playback, MUSE pulled a prank. Dominic did "vocals" and guitar on UPRISING, while Matt did drums, all of them lip-synching. In the video you can see Matt laughing his [censored] off while "playing" the drums, and Dom grinning as he "sings".
...

Someone really ought to start a Facebook campaign for what we want in the next Bond movie, starting with MUSE doing several songs.

Another classic Muse anti-lipsync performance:

New Born - Muse (on Live and Kicking)

Whoever is making the case for Muse needs to stop! Very mediocre band. Lets turn our attention to a band like The Last Shadow Puppets who would be a throwback to the 60's. They have beautiful string arrangements in their songs that would fit in nicely with the theme. Somebody like Modest Mouse would be interesting choice. Other bands would be Duffy, Mando Diao, Ray Davies, Bryan Ferry, or Franz Ferdinand.

Hm...a country artist doesn't seem like a good idea to me. And Cristy Lane's mainstream success was in the 70s and 80s; since then she's mostly recorded gospel songs, Christmas albums, and compilations. She's certainly older than Bryan Ferry and has been out of the mainstream longer than he has, and do we really need to be catering to the Christian demographic with a Bond film? With Bryan Ferry, at least he's active enough to have a Grammy nomination in the last decade. Not to bash Lane, but she just doesn't seem appropriate.

I mean, think about it this way...

The audience is in the theater for Bond 23. After the trailers, etc., the movie starts.

There's the gunbarrel, with the dripping blood. And then the teaser scene with frenetic action and maybe a hint of sex, all set in a sophisticated foreign locale.

Then there's the title sequence...with a country/Christian song playing over images of silhouetted nude women and slo-mo firing guns.

Then we get back to the mayhem and sex in sophisticated foreign locales.

Now...something about that doesn't seem right to me....

Eh, I dunno...The last few Bond movies have made money like crazy, so I don't think there's much of a need to expand the demographic base, and actually it could be counterproductive in the long run. I can't help but think that a Christian/country tune would be jarringly out of place as a Bond theme, and even if the song itself isn't overtly religious, she could face backlash from her fans for "selling out." (Pat Boone's notorious 1997 album of easy-listening renditions of heavy-metal songs was greeted with hostility from his Christian fans, who viewed anything even remotely associated with heavy metal as in bad taste, if not worse. A Christian country singer doing a song for a Bond film would most likely face a similar backlash.) And another thing I can't help but think is that making Bond appeal to religious audiences would require much, much, much more than simply slapping a Christian song onto the standard sex-and-violence-riddled Bond film; that risks seeming cynical or even insulting.

I'd argue that Franz F is more popular then Muse here in the states. Now Ferry might not be popular enough nowadays but he would put out something interesting. After listening to Cee Lo Green's new album Lady Killer, I think he would be a great choice. Some of his songs on the new album sound very Bondish. He is definitely popular enough to get a crack at it.

If you get an awesome orchestra behind Cee Lo, he would have my vote 100% of the way. Use his voice though. It can do some amazing things. Don't let the music taste of the week drown it out.

Bryan Ferry is too old and out of the mainstream to do a Bond song. And I don't thin he has hardly any name recognition in the U.S. anymore. Franz Ferdinand has not followed up their 2004 success in the United States. i still only know one song of theirs.

Calling MUSE "mediocre" is a bit of a stretch. They may not be your cup of tea, but they're very talented.

If not MUSE, I'd suggest Christy Lane:

You could really pull in the Christian demographic with Christy. She's sold millions of albums and is a well-established, well-liked Christian/Country singer.

No.

I really don't care, but I'm of the opinion it should be an instrumental track - I just don't know if Arnold can pull off another From Russia with Love or On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I hope he can.

Well, obviously Bond isn't known for having Christian or Country singers do the title/theme songs, but change isn't always a bad thing. I think Christy would be willing to do the theme song if EON toned down the violence, got rid of the guns, and eliminated all sex and nudity for the next film. Maybe make Bond-23 a journey of self-awareness for Bond as he embarks upon a path of introspection, spiritual enlightenment, and emotional fulfillment, and getting in touch with his feminine side without having to resort to using guns, sex, or living on the edge.

Or....Bond goes on a mission of brutality as he looks for the head of Quantum killing plenty of henchmen in similar looking clothing, shagging on ton of women that are oddly good looking compared to societal norms, drinking enough martinis along the way that would make any other person black out and doing crazy living on the edge things like driving the DBS off a cliff as he falls into another DBS as 'The Killers' start the intro.

Just saying.

Given the fact that all males singers have performed a bond theme since Daniel Craig came on board (although Alicia Keys was involved in a duet with Jack White), I say continue with a male. A male vocal kinda gives a darker vibe, which is exactly what Daniel Craig has. The Muse would be a good choice. Coldplay could do something dark, maybe. It's gotta have a rock/pop sound to it. If David Arnold comes back, which it sounds like there's a chance, I would like him to contribute to the title song. I mean think about it, two of the better bond themes he wrote..."The World is Not Enough" and "You Know My Name."

Would be pretty funny if they got Bono to do something. I'd rather him write instead. Nicole Scherzinger (however you spell it) did an excellent job with Goldeneye. I'm just trying to think of male singers and I'm drawing blanks. I'll think of something.

How about Dave Matthews? not the band...just Dave. He could write something pretty catchy...
