I'm 3/4ths of the way through Season 3, which I am finding to be very spotty. Sometimes it's great...and sometimes it feels like we're treading water or repeating ourselves.
Seasons 2 and 3 are the best. I love season 3 for introducing Andy, who has easily become one of my favorite characters. Season 4 is probably the worst. It was during the writer's strike, so there are less episodes, but even the ones they filmed and showed were really lackluster, and the direction the plots take are just too out there, annoying, and dark. And the first 4 or 5 of them are 45 minutes long, so the rest seem too short in comparison. But. Season 5 is effing brilliant - they really got back on track for that one, back to what made The Office a great show, even with some drastic plot changes, it's really one of the best seasons (and has the best cold open ever. Hands down.). This current season, though . . . well, that's another story.
As I go through the season, I start to find that Michael Scott is more inept and oblivious than David Brent was, which makes Michael a somewhat harmless character. He doesn't mean to be the way he is, which is why I think his character arc will ultimately be less satisfactory when the show ends than was David Brent. When the U.K. series ended, Brent had come to some sort of an epiphany that he needed to mature, both in and outside the office. I don't think Michael Scott can do that, because he comes across as if he was dropped on his head at a young age.
Odd - I feel the
exact opposite. I think that's what will make for a great series finale - there won't be an epiphany moment, which I always find eye-rollworthy. And this is the U.S. - we like our tv d-bags a little bit lovable.
Me included.
You're right about the "icky" performance from Gervais; I can't offer you any advice to get around it. He's playing a fairly repulsive character inside and on the outside.
BJ Novak appears to have come out of virtually nowhere. Somehow he knew the right people at the right time and manage to become a writer, an actor, and an associate producer on the show. He also knew John Krasinski before THE OFFICE, so that's how they ended up working together. I'm not buying the Ryan and Kelly or the Jan and Michael love stories; they are two office romances two many. I like Dwight and Angela and Jim and Pam.
Yeah, I'm never going to get over my repulsion of David Brent. Don't get me wrong, Ricky Gervais is great (I may be one of the only people who loved "The Invention of Lying"), but David Brent is what keeps me from going back to the UK version.
And I'm just not a fan of B.J. Novak the actor, or Ryan. Some of the episode's he's written have been quite good, but I honestly think he's only on the air because he's probably demanding it. I don't care for the Ryan/Kelly love plot, but I love Jan and Michael (have you seen the cocktail party episode yet? Jan is fantastic in that one). However, season 5 gives us the best office romance since Dwight and Angela: Michael and Holly Flax.
Also, have you seen Parks and Recreation? As much as I love "The Office," my love for Parks and Recreation runs so much deeper. It's in the same style of The Office, and same "creator" of the US Office (Greg Daniels), but I find it much more enjoyable. If you're in the UK though, I'm not sure how available it is, or even if the first season is on Region 2.
ETA: Yeah, so . . . you're not in the UK, Gravity's Silhouette, so feel free to watch P&R at your leisure.
