Apparently there is yet one more potential 'name' still to be added to the cast, playing the mysterious Mr.Church, and it is none of the following : Bruce Willis, Tom Cruise, Christopher Walken, Josh Brolin, Tom Berenger, or Ray Stevensen. So...
C'monnnn, dino, you must have some hunches. Don't tease like that!

And Sly does look a little like Paul McCartney in that photo.

I dunno, I probably would have guessed Bruce Willis, to complete the Planet Hollywood trilogy of titans. Uhh, Frank Stallone?!

# Sylvester Stallone as Barney Ross a.k.a. The Schizo
TRUE: Barney Ross is the de-facto leader of the Expendables, called the Schizo for his rambo-esque ability to go from nice guy to bloodthirsty at the drop of the hat. This is going to be his last mission before retirement.
# Mickey Rourke as Tool, A former Expendable
TRUE: Tool and Ross were former partners in crime, until Tool retired to become an arms dealer. He is the supplier for Ross for the upcoming mission, and has a small role. He does come into play at the end, and does have a some cool moments of badassery with Ross in a flashback.
# Jason Statham as Lee Christmas, the second in command
TRUE: Lee Christmas is an British-American Expendable who takes over Tool's spot as a the 2nd in command. He is one of the most dangerous Expendables as he has a big mouth and bigger guns.
# Jet Li as Kong Bao, a former Chinese mercenary turned Expendable
TRUE: Kong Bao is a martial arts expert. Is despised by Gunnar as he is the last recruited Expendable and isn't one of the "Tool-Ross" Era. Has the most hand-to-hand combat scenes in the movie.
# Dolph Lundgren as Gunnar Jensen, a German Expendable
TRUE: Gunnar is an Expendable with a nihilistic view of their "business". Turns on the Expendables in South America in exchange for 10 million dollars and a city to call his own.
# Terry Crews as Hale Caesar, an Expendable
TRUE: The most "philosophical" expendable with a serious ego problem. His character is written well and is Kong Bao's best friend in the group. Takes alot of damage from villains in the film, but is a strong my friend.
# Steve Austin as Dan Paine, a Sadistic Former Marine turned Bodyguard
MOSTLY TRUE: He's former black ops, and for the most part he's Monroe's protective detail. A sick my friend, although we only hear of his former work, as it is alluded he has helped Garza in the past during the Bush Sr. Era during a secret C.I.A. war.
# Danny Trejo as Emanuel, a treacherous South American Contact
TRUE: Pretty much a glorified cameo, Emanuel helps the Expendables with housing and information about Garza's security and miniature-army. Sells out Ross after Christmas's loudmouth insults Emanuel. Gets whats coming to him, BIG TIME.
# Robert Knepper as Richard, the "Gay" Expendable
TRUE: Small role as Tool's personal "contribution" to the Garza coup, a former Navy SEAL who went AWOL during the first gulf war and has been doing small-time bounty hunting since. Is nicknamed "The Handyman" as an allusion to his homosexuality. Has a pretty bad run in with Paine which screws over the Expendables.
# Giselle Itié as Sandra
TRUE: A woman who secretly works for a resistance against Garza, as her brother and parents were killed by Garza. Falls in love with Barney, who later asks him to not participate in the coup.
# Randy Couture as Toll Road, an Expendable
MOSTLY TRUE: Toll Road is the last Expendable of the Tool-Ross Era. Expert at demolition and responsible for half the explosions in the film. Small but spread apart role.
# Charisma Carpenter as Lacy, Lee Christmas's Fiancee
TRUE: Lacy is in fact Lee's finacee. Threatens to leave him if he left to do the coup. Morally unwavered by Christmas's actions.
# Eric Roberts as Monroe, a C.I.A. Agent bent on arresting the Expendables and preventing the coup of General Garza
MOST TRUE: He is a C.I.A. Agent who replaces Will Sands, whose role is now reduced to a small scene with Monroe and a flashback, as the head on the case of catching the Expendables. Stubborn, Dedicated and is willing to go to extreme lengths to capture Ross. Has a history with the Expendables. Hires Paine personally after seeing his black ops record. Is partnered with French INTERPOL Agent Diane Lickson for most of the movie. Both are betrayed by Paine and let the surviving Expendables escape after being rescued.
# Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Bar Patron who encounters Barney Ross and almost come to blows.
TRUE: The character is described as "Bar Brute" in the shooting script. Screen Direction says the moment with Ross has "seemingly decades of history behind it". Fun gag.
# David Zayas as General Garza, The Dictator
TRUE: The Military Dictator, Alfredo Garza, although mostly the puppet master of the story. Kills Mr. Church's Friend to assure his strength over the political resistance. Gets *beep* UP. If anything needs to be cut to secure a PG-13, it's his scene with Christmas and Ross at the end.
# Brittany Murphy as Tool's Girlfriend, a Singer
MOSTLY TRUE: Is named as Amy, incredibly flirtatious bar singer who is Tool's girlfriend. Alluded that she used to be a call girl. Cameo at best, used as Eye Candy and further reason for Ross to retire like Tool.
# Gary Daniels as The Brit, a former Expendable who now works for Garza.
MOSTLY TRUE: He plays the Character of Wickham a.k.a. The Brit, who left to do more "dirty" work, including intimidation tactics for Garza. His spot was replaced by Bao, who he refers to as "Kung Phooey". Helps orchestrate Gunnar's betrayal on the group. His death causes Garza to turn to Paine for help. Small Role yet one of the cooler characters in the Ross-Tool flashback.
# The Nogueria Brothers as Garza's Henchmen
TRUE: Identified as "The Twins" in the script, are featured members of Emanuel's posse. No Dialogue.
# Scott Adkins was originally cast as Dan Paine; recast into a smaller role as Garza's Top Assassin, who kills the young man associated to Mr. Church
FALSE: The Assassin is in there, briefly at the beginning, but is not played by Adkins. Was in the running to play Paine but never cast.
So far I have no casting on Agent Will Sands, INTERPOL Agent Diane Lickson, Hector Almeida, or Mr. Church. But for some character information:
Agent Will Sands is Monroe's former senior partner and let the Expendables go in order to save the life of two children they were protecting. Sands investigation causes him to lose his job and Monroe becomes head of the case. Neurotic.
Diane Lickson is a smooth talking experienced INTERPOL agent, sent to bring in several of the Tool-Ross Era Expendables in for international crimes. Keeps Monroe in check for the most part, yet distrusts Paine from the start. Takes a pretty brutal beating from Garza during one of the end scenes.
Hector Almeida - A young south american political revolutionary, last surviving son of Mr. Church's former childhood friend, Juan Alemeida. Former friend of Sandra's and has a brief speech in the beginning of the film.
Mr. Church - a shady, gruff and scarred veteran whose childhood friend was Juan Alemeida. Made lots of money profiteering off War and had been funding Hector's campaign to overthrow Garza. Promised Juan that he'd take care of Hector, but when Hector is assassinated, he pays the Expendables millions of dollars to kill Garza. Sort've the bookend actor in both the beginning and end of the film. The email described Mr. Church's casting as a good surprise "in the works" that will "drop jaws and blow minds".

"Danny Trejo us not in the film. Sly met with him and wanted him but when he rewrote the script he needed a different look"
And, a bit more un-officially, according to Harry Knowles, Ahnuld would be playing himself in the film, not some anonymous bar patron. So, grain of salt with everything on that list above. Still, good find anyway, dodge.
Now, who wants to see Sly calling the shots on set? Clicky :

I cannot wait to see a trailer, let alone the whole damn thing!
Speaking of which...anyone have any clues as to when we might start seeing some serious footage? And...by gosh, I'll go for broke: though we don't see many sneak previews these days, any chance we might see one for this?

Well the blog said they'll be advertising at Cannes, this could just mean posters or a full on trailer. I'm sure Sly remembers the internet buzz that the first "John Rambo" trailer got, maybe he'll try and do something similar again.

Stallone is (perhaps somewhat surprisingly) very internet-savvy and well aware of the huge buzz THE EXPENDABLES has been generating on the web. You can bet your bottom dollar that he's got a small treat in store for his fans, and it's coming soon.

Yeah Sly's Q&A with fans at Aint it cool is the stuff of legend. I wish more stars would do that kind of thing. (Allegedly Bruce Willis made a brief appearance at AICN to promote Live free or die hard, but this mostly involved 'fans' dissing him for making a PG-13 Die Hard

Stallone gave us juicy advance footage of ROCKY BALBOA and RAMBO months in advance of those movies' release. I'm sure he'll do the same with THE EXPENDABLES. I'd virtually stake my life that there will be a teaser trailer at some point this summer, or, perhaps more likely, two or three minutes of awesome action appearing online.

I hope you're right, Loomis. Sooner the better!
One other thing that may be of interest: Sly's new box-office mojo may help a long-cherished project of his: yes, I do mean his film biography of Edgar Allen Poe. Robert Downey has reportedly expressed interest...I'd like to see it happen. And now be a better time. Twenty years ago or so, Sly may have been unable to resist adding a Rocky-like spin. Poe in his youth was a broad-jumper, they say. And way back when Sly might have been tempted to add a long training montage...

I'm intrigued by the ever-discussed POE project. I'm not sure Stallone is the right guy to do it, but I'll be interested to see what he manages to do with it.
If it ever happens, that is, which is a pretty big "if."
Maybe not so iffy?
"Robert Downey Jr. is riding a career that is only comparable to the one that is currently sweeping Mickey Rourke through Hollywood. Quite ironic considering that the two are starring in Iron Man 2 together. While The Soloist may not have set the box office alight last weekend, the upcoming Sherlock Holmes should assure some bums on seats. Downey may have the pick of scripts but the comeback kid appears to want to work with only one man - Sylvester Stallone.
The Oscar nominated star has stated that he’s interested in Stallone’s biopic of Gothic writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Stallone has been trying to get his Poe film off the ground for almost a decade and he even wanted Downey Jr to portray the infamous writer when the film almost finally took off in 2005. Years ago, Stallone and Downey’s careers were at their nadir and studio backing was not forthcoming. Now when questioned by the Metro over what types of films he would like to make, the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang star said:
“Stallone wrote a great script that he wants to direct about Edgar Allan Poe.”
With Stallone also flying high due to the back-to-back hits of Rocky Balboa and Rambo (or John Rambo) as well as the impending The Expendables, it looks like the Poe biopic might just make it to screens.
Poe was behind some incredibly important literary classics including The Murders at Rue Morgue, The Raven, The Pit and the Pendulum and many more.
In the 1960’s, schlock director Roger Corman made a series of masterful horror films based on Poe’s works starring horror legend Vincent Price (you really should check them out) and Lou Reed recorded an album inspired by his works.
We’ll have more news on the project as (if) it develops. However, if Stallone still wants to direct the film and Downey Jr. wants to star then I’m sure that it’ll happen."

Excerpt:
London's Daily Mail newspaper reported that '80s action star -- and our favorite comeback story waiting to happen -- Dolph Ludgren foiled an armed robbery attempt without even being at the scene of the crime. His picture was enough to scare the perpetrators.
The paper says that a trio of armed and masked robbers busted into Lundgren's villa near Marbella, Spain, and tied up his wife, terrorizing her into forking over cash and jewelry at knife-point. But after noticing a family photo of the brawny 6'5" karate black belt in one of the home's bedrooms, they realized that they'd bitten off more than they wanted to chew and fled the scene.
