Of all the remakes announced this decade, this is one of the most bizzare:
1) It only came out in 1993 for God's sake! If they make it R-Rated like the original practically everyone who is "supposed" to be able to see it will have at least been alive when the original came out.
2) It's not as if the idea behind Cliffhanger (e.g. cool action stuff happens in the mountains) is so unique that they couldn't do a similar-ish movie without buying the rites (see point 3). Wasn't Vertical Limit pretty similar in some ways? Wasn't Cliffhanger itself described by some at the time as "Die Hard in the moutains"?
3) Is Cliffhanger really a recognised brand name which will bring in people who wouldn't see it were it called Mountain Madness or whatever?
And check out the producer's rationale behind the picture; "Just as they rebooted Star Trek, we're going to do the same with Cliffhanger". Yep, that's exactly what you're doing. Very apt analogy, sir.

More Cannes goodness, including individual character posters of Sly, Jet, and Stat. (Does he have a nickname? Is it 'The Stat'...?)

Plus Sly and Dolph on the set in New Orleans :

The shots of Sly and the Dolphster are way-cool. The heat just keeps on building. I'm not so sure about that banner with the skull.Seems to me they can do better than that.

In other Stallone related movie news, there's a Cliffhanger remake on the horizon:

Yes, very silly isn't it. It's not like Sly couldn't do a sequel, and even if they think he isn't 'relevant' enough, just pair him up with a young trainee climber. Sly is nearing retirement and showing his student the ropes (literally), when Terrorist Stuff happens on the mountains etc etc.

Another possible candidate for the un-announced Church role in “Expendables”, could be Hulk Hogan. The Hulk hasn’t had a movie role in a long time. Sly and Hulk could reunite again. Sly and Hulk has been buddies for years, Sly was the one who inducted Hulk into the WWE Hall of Fame, so who knows that Sly could get Hulkamania as Church as well.
Sly, Arnold, and the Hulkster all in the same scene together? WOW!

The prospect underwhelms me. Still, any news is good news from the what must surely be one of the most locked-tight sets in memory. They've been shooting for two months now--and still they throw us crumbs. Not even crumbs--crumblets!

I think it's fair to say that casting wont exactly blow any minds. It might drop some jaws though.
And certainly raise a few eyebrows...iffin that it's true.

Exhausted from watching Sly & Steve Austin beat the crap out of each other. Slammin against a real brick wall=real blood. busy medic
Not much to go on, but we take what crumbs we can get. Let the leaks begin in earnest!

Yeah I think Hulk Hogan would be underwhelming casting. Although Loomis may go full geek-out at the prospect of a Rocky III reunion, it'd mean that we'd have two wrestlers "acting" in The Expendables which would lower the coolness factor a little bit.
Anyway, if there's one cast member of Rocky III I'd like to see as Church, it wouldn't be Hulk Hogan. You know who I'm talking about...the T himself. Deaaaaaad meat!

According to the blog, a script rewrite has occured and Brit Murphy is out. They are still waiting on Church due to a schedualing conflict that's being worked out. Some other interesting tidbits in the new post include mention of a 60 second behind the scenes vid that they have cut but are holding back because the marketing company doesn't want to start things to early. Whatever, I just want to see a teaser trailer and hear who's playing Church.
Any news on why Brit is out now?

Well, here's one especially for you, dodge: the first look at Mickey Rourke's character (or at least I'm not aware that these pics have surfaced anywhere else):

Note also the shot of Sly sporting facial bruising of a sort not seen since ROCKY II.

Thanks, Loomis. It's also nice to see Mickey apparently taking full advantage of the persk of stardom.

Stallone describes the movie about a group of missionaries trying to over throw a South African dictator as "Rambo times 10."

Oh, Lord, that'll work for me.

As we wait for news re Church from this insanely tight-lipped bunch:

Actually he does say "mercenaries", it would be a somewhat different movie if they were missionaries

This movie has me really excited, I just wish the cast was filled with more action stars. As that seems to be what Stallone was going for in the first place.
Well Stallone did offer parts to Kurt Russell and Jean Claude van Damme, and allegedly Wesley Snipes too, who all turned it down. However the cast we ended up with is definitely a once in a lifetime gathering of old and new school action stars. And there is one more role yet to be cast, the ever-mysterious Church...
Anyway the blog lady posted some character names and attributes which you may find amusing, especially the names :
Barney Ross (SLY) is the sage and strategist of the team. Lee Christmas (JASON STATHAM) is former SAS and a savant with anything with a blade. Toll Road (RANDY COUTURE) is the intellect of the group, a skilled and deadly demolitions expert. Hale Caesar (TERRY CREWS) is a long barrel specıalıst who has been friends with Barney for over 10 years. Ying Yang (JET LI) is a master at close quarters combat, who because of his size is the brunt of jokes from the bigger guys. But they all know he can be as deadly with a kick as they are with traditional weapons. Gunnar (DOLPH LUNDGREN) is a combat veteran and an expert at precision sniping. He’s also the problem child of the group.

Ying Yang (JET LI)
Wasn't it Kong Kao back in the day? I liked that name. Ying Yang sounds a bit silly, although presumably Li would have been consulted (if only to make sure it didn't have any unfortunate connotations in Chinese).

Agreed, it sounds a little silly, but it's right in line with Lee Christmas and Hale Caesar. We can only hope that this level of humor is kept in balance with the action and suspense, that the film won't average out to be one winky-wink. As of now, I'm not worried, but I too would have prefered Kong Kao for Jet Li.

(I wonder if this will be a Bond PTS style action scene where we are introduced to The Expendables doing their thing. Since the main plot is about taking down a South American dictator, it seems odd that they'd have to randomly deal with some Somalian pirates in the middle of all that!)

Is Sly cannily adding some ripped-from-the-headlines style action to The Expendables? The latest blog entry refers to some "Somalian pirate scenes", which I don't think were ever mentioned before. For all I know its been in the script since day one, but I suspect Sly liked what he saw on the news a few weeks ago and decided to get some of that on screen!

Well, we can only hope. I'm not encouraged by the news. But female Somalian pirates might be kind of cool. Or female Somalian strippes moonlighting as pirates...
