In fact, watching Casino Royale right before viewing QoS is almost required viewing for anyone going to see QoS in the theaters

Indeed. And I know quite a few people who went into QOS without having seen CR, or being aware of the new direction of the Bond movies. They would have been totally lost as to what they were watching.

I saw QoS with a friend and neither of us had seen Casino Royale.

(I had given up on Bond in the Dalton/Brosnan ere, I watched QoS because it was starting at the right time and we didn't want to hang about for later film).

Neither of us had any problems following the plot. We had both seen the QoS trailers when seeing other movies and that was enough really. The plot was fairly straight-forward and, as I say, neither of us had a problem.

I then went out and bought CR and watched it prior to seeing QoS for the second time. Certainly, watching CR added to my enjoyment of the second showing, but it didn't really add anything essential to QoS that I had not figured out for myself in the first sitting.

It was the fact that QoS is so very different from previous Bond movies that pulled me back into being a Bond fan.

3) they have to keep Dench and Craig together - just wouldn't work with a tough male M - they would clash too much - "your mother?" "She thinks she is." - it would seem this is true of their characters as well as actors in a Bond film - it's almost as if there is a familial bond between them. Not only this, but the one brings out the depth of the character in the other, IOW Craig makes Dench's M more interesting, and Dench makes Craig's Bond more interesting (this comes out in both films). Eon can't break these two up - their scenes together work too well.

I agree with you about Judi Dench, she is perfect for Craig's Bond. We all need to keep our fingers crossed that she does not retire.

She is 74 years old and will be 77 by the time Bond 23 comes around.

God forbid, and it is a miserable thought because she is a national treasure, but she may not fit enough for such big screen work.

Yep a simple, subtle moment when after she says that her face shows that she's aware Mathis isn't coming back. Ever. And Craig downing his glass with no sentiment showing sells this scene beautifully.

I noticed Bond's request of M to note in her report that "Fields has shown true bravery" while he is escaping the hotel.

While I know that Bond is being very nice to say such kind words towards a fallen comrade, I wonder what kind of bravery Fields has really demonstrated?

Not telling people her first name?

I have the script, they cut a bit out of that line, what Bond was really supposed to say was: "Fields has shown true bravery in not telling people her ridiculous first name."

A few moments of silence to allow the cinema audience to laugh, without missing any important dialogue.

- Doesn't Bond wear a blue vest under his suit at the end of CR because in the PTS he isn't wearing one.

It's actually an entirely different suit than the one at the end of CASINO ROYALE. Similar in striped-pattern, but the cut is different, and as you noted, there's no vest. This is due, I'm sure, to the change in tailors.

As Harmsway said, Brioni made the suits for CR, but Tom Ford made the suits for QOS. Seems like a pretty stupid time to change tailors to me, but...
