'Quantum of Solace' Announced On DVD and Blu-ray

"Quantum of Solace's anamorphic transfer is rock solid. The 2.35:1 image is crisp and good-looking, with nothing noticeable in the way of digital artifacts. Roberto Schaefer's cinematography plays mostly in grays and blacks, which are deeply rendered with appropriate contrast. When brighter colors occasionally appear--as in the Italian chase sequence or the deep blue waters surrounding Giannini's villa--they pop nicely."
"No complaints with the audio quality, either; the 5.1 track is sharp and exciting, with crystal-clear dialogue and well-mixed music. Directional effects are very good in the action sequences--and not just in the big, subwoofer-shaking explosions, but in the well-placed swinging planks and crashing glass of the church fight and the whizzing motors of the boat chase. Overall, a very impressive mix."

The exclusive set is a no-brainer for me. Having already planned to buy QOS there, an extra $34 to get two Blu movies (LTK and TMWTGG) not available anywhere else until May is too good to pass up. If only that set was combinable with Vol 3 for $25 off...

Is it definitely not? They all seemed to be priced at $59.99.

I was wondering... what is the right (original) aspect ratio of this movie?? IMDb.com and this review says 2.35 : 1. But amazon.com and my copy (Zone 4) says 2.40:1DVDactive have updated one of their reviews of the DVD of QoS with video and audio ratings which both get 4/5 stars and here is what they said:

That was my bad. I was looking at footnote 3 instead of 2. It turns into one hell of a deal if you were already planning on purchasing QOS.

2.40:1 is the right aspect ratio and reviews and other sources tend to say its 2.35:1 since its a common aspect ratio and the differences between the two would not be noticable but I believe that CR had a 2.40:1 aspect ratio and I assume that its the same with QoS so what it says on the DVD is probably the right aspect ratio.

Now that provision of an analogue track is not neccessary, the space taken up by it is filled with a wider image, hence 2.40 for films post about 2000

The menus are very basic and uninteresting, it doesn't even animate into the different items on the menu like you'd expect it to. Doesn't really bother me though.
Looking at some of those pictures reminds me of how glad I am to have the PPK back.

Panavision used to be 2.35:1 as the film had to contain an optical analogue soundtrack. The Dolby digital signal is recorded in-between the sprocket holes and the DTS signal is on a seperate CD linked via a timecode on the frames.
Now that provision of an analogue track is not neccessary, the space taken up by it is filled with a wider image, hence 2.40 for films post about 2000
That's not the reason. Anamorphic prints have no separation between film frames as they use all the height of the frame. This created the problem that every time there was a splice, a flash of light would occur at the top or bottom of the screen. In the early '70's (way before digital sound was introduced), it was decided to slightly matte anamorphic projection from its native 2.35:1 to 2.39:1. The film is wider not because it shows more but because it shows less. 2.4:1 is an approximation for practical purposes but the actual AR is 2.39.

Thanks, Darren. Think I've outgrown CBn now. Only signed in today to answer a PM, and will not be posting anymore. CBn used to be great fun, but now there's too much negativity (and this is from the QoS supporters).Who's rattled your cage? Your kind of post has kept me away from here for weeks.I'll buy Quantum of Solace to sit on my shelf alongside Die Another Day.You know you're a Bond fan when you can't wait for the DVD/Blu-Ray release of a film even if you didn't like the movie that much.
I wasn't too warm on QOS, but just for the elements I did like about it March 24th can't come fast enough!
I personally will not be purchasing the Blu-ray on March 24. I am much more excited about the Goldfinger/Moonraker/The World is not Enough Blu-ray three pack and the special edition of Never Say Never Again than Quantum of Solace.
My thoughts on the 2008 movie did soften on a second viewing but I still rank it in the bottom five of all Bond movies. It's not a movie that I have an interest in viewing a third time.
Oh, bring on the haters to spray their hate. Can't have any thread about QoS without them showing up.
"The movie sucked... but I'll buy the DVD anyway... and the Blu-Ray... and the double-dipped Deluxe 3-Disc Edition whenever that comes around."
Which is sad given that your humorous posts Bondian are one of the few reasons I visit CBn.
See you around, my friend.
All the best.
Cheers,
Ian
