I've been watching segments of Casino Royale over the last few days, and wow. What a film it is. Reaching this kind of level again is going to be a tough ask.

I agree. I don't think they'll even match it within Daniel Craig's tenure.

Quantum of Solace. To paraphrase Brad Whittaker, man's greatest invention was not the wheel or the alphabet, but the dvd. It enables you to instantly skip to the good bits (PTS, rooftop chase, Tosca etc) whilst cutting out all the dull or so-so stuff (er, a lot)

Had a B) day yesterday and couldn't sleep so I ended up putting OHMSS on at about 1am! Wasn't really paying attention as my mind was elsewhere, but it was good to kick back with one of the better Bond films in the series.

Quantum of Solace. This is a weird one, sometimes I can outright despise it and others, I can thoroughly enjoy it. Had a great time watching it today, Daniel Craig stops this from being crap. Ah well, It's not going to go away, so I guess I'll just have to get over it and accept it for what it is.

Thunderball

I really have grown to love this one over the years. There's an excellent sequence right in the middle of this one, from the briefing of the 00s in that wonderful room, to Bond meeting Domino, getting the better of Largo at the casino and those great scenes with Leiter, Q and Pinder.

By the way, I found the underwater battle a lot more interesting this time around.

Goldeneye

As I work thru the Bond films again, it's Pirece time; I'm consistently frustrated with GE for many reasons (which I wont bore you with); I know it's a fave among many, but for me, it's issues make it one of the weakest of the whole series...

FYEO is on TBS this morning. Really wish it had been more tightly edited for pacing. I've said it before, but whenever I watch this one anymore I'm ready for it to be over after the warehouse raid/death of Locque. I like the scenes afterward-- the ATAC retrieval, the rip from LALD and the climbing scene, but it feels like it takes 3 days to get there.

There are some nice moments of old school spying (the fogged up mirror) and I like the break from the cold spy world as Bond courts Melina a little, but I'd have liked to have seen just a little more of the former.

I'll certainly be turning it off before the Maggie/Max finale. MR never knew that level of unfunny schmaltz. B)

Double feature over the weekend:

The Man with the Golden Gun, which I hadn't seen in decades and whose quality was a very pleasant surprise!

Moonraker: A fork in the eye

The World is not Enough

It was on Channel 7 here in Australia, on Friday night. I really enjoyed it. It's a well made Bond adventure. Pierce is at his best, and I even like Denise Richards as Christmas Jones.

There's a bit too much night-time action (a la AVTAK, DAF and TND) but I always enjoy the boat chase and the underrated ski chase (still looking good after 10 years). Great to see Robbie Coltrane back as Zukovsky, although he could have had some longer scenes.

I love the song.... B)

Also, excellent titles sequence by Daniel Kleinman. In my mind, only his work on Casino Royale is better.

Rewatched Die Another Day on friday.

The Good:
- Kleinman's title sequence + Madonna's title song
- Pierce Brosnan
- Q scene (John Cleese)
- cinematography (David Tattersall)
- Raoul (Emilio Echevarría)
- sword fight at Blades
(- teaser poster with silenced Walther in melting ice)

The Bad:
- bad dialogue
- plot for a video game
- ludicrously unplausible action sequences
- Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens)
- overdose of CGI use
- second half of the movie is more like xXx then Bond and that is a vital mistake
- Jinx (Halle Berry)
- Mr. Kil's laser machine
- wasted good potential (Bond's capture)
- Icarus = almost exact copy of Blofeld's space laser in Diamonds Are Forever

Die Another Day and Tomorrow Never Dies are the competing movies for the questionable honour of being the weakest Bond film of them all (22 EON's and 2 non-EON's), because more then any of the others there is the lost charm of a James Bond film (machine guns, CGI, video game plot, etc. not compensated by masterful sets or a beautiful soundtrack or unforgettable villains or character development).

I'd agree with most of that. It's a shame about the 2nd half of the movie, because, Jinx aside, it started pretty well. I still enjoy the PTS (it's action-packed but it's also quite gritty and dark (the weather in England, I mean Korea helps!)), and the sword fight. I also enjoy the scenes in Cuba, and I'd like to have seen more of Raoul, although we did get a similar character in Mathis in the following film.

Watched Octopussy last night.

Just great fun. Roger does a superb job in the role despite he was beginning to look a little old here. It's a really action packed adventure with a lot of funny and classy scenes. And I also feel the music of this one is really underrated.

Sure it has it's flaws, but I only noticed very little of that this time. I think I have to put this film higher in my Bondfilm rankings.

Had a Casino Royale and From Russia With Love Blu-Ray afternoon on the new TV downstairs.

I never actually noticed how scared Mollaka's hand was! Wow... it's only a 32", but I've seen a lot of cool new stuff.

I watched Octopussy the other evening.

It was great fun. Good music too.

I think it's hilarious when Q (in a hot air balloon) knocks one of Kamal Khan's goons out cold and as he lands, Magda and one or two other Octopussy girls start to grab him. He tells them "Stop, there's no time for that. Later perhaps!"

Does anyone else like to think that Q ended up in bed with at least 2 of them?!

Enjoyed it as always.

Still don't see what makes the boat chase boring or the skydive offensive. But that's okay. B)
