I'm actually not that opposed to the idea. If he could play Howard Hughes, why not Fleming?

Why not... He's a great actor. He looks a tad too young IMO, but if it fits the script, I say: Why not?

I wouldn't be against it either. He's a pretty great actor IMHO. Not exactly a dead ringer for Fleming, obviously, but if he channels what Fleming was all about, like say, Anthony Hopkins in Nixon, I can see it working.

a lot of people really hate DiCaprio... for no really good reason. He's a really good actor imo... so if he wants to tackle Fleming... go for it. He just bears no resemblance to him whatsoever.

You know who would fit though... Geoffrey Rush.

He might be a bit old looking... but I think he could pull it off. Hell, he did it well with Peter Sellers, and he looks more like Fleming than Sellers.

I agree, mate. He would be the one who would be most suitable for me to.

He was great at playing Peter Sellers. Quite uncanny in a lot of ways.

Cheers,

Ian

Funny, I just had a meeting last week at DiCaprio's production company. Too bad this didn't come up.

Is this about Flemings childhood days at Eton? As long as nancy doesn't try to play over 12 years old I'd buy it. Hell, I'd buy the dvd.

And he didn't exactly sell Howard Hughes.

Rush is totally my choice. Not only a brilliant actor, but he bears a remarkable resemblance to Fleming.

As much as I think Leo is a good actor, Geoffery Rush is by far more appropriate to portray Fleming.
I disagree with the idea of beginning the film at the eve of his wedding. I think it should start far earlier. I know there are flash backs but I think it would make better narrative to begin somewhere like:

* Ian begins at Reuters, or
* When Ian first meets Ann, or
* The beginning of WW2

Where does it say that DiCaprio will play Fleming? It just says his company have the rights to make it, as has been reported here by Cbn

I think Rush would have been ideal a decade ago but now is too old and DiCaprio himself is too young, but the better option of those two

I hope the final film will be good as his life deserves a movie to fascinate the general audience outside of the likes of us

Let's hope DiCaprio plays Fleming. I think Leo is the finest actor of his generation (superb in This Boy's Life and Blood Diamond - Fleming's drawl should be no problem for the kid). If handled correctly, it could be Oscar-bait. If Leo is attached, the film has a vague chance of being both made and seen. I sincerely hope the project sees the light of day.

I loved Charles Dance's Ian Fleming in the underresourced but underrated 1989 TV movie biopic, "Goldeneye" (as opposed to "GoldenEye" ). But they should, at all costs, avoid the quasi-Bond movie approach of Spymaker - Jason Connery's stunt casting as Fleming was fun but desparate.

Good luck, Appian Way and forward with "Fleming"

I'm sure DiCaprio could do a decent Fleming - but I sort of rather see him as one of Fleming's American friends, like Bryce or whatever his name was. Rush would be a great Fleming. Although I think Prince Philip would be the best choice LOL.

I'm not convinced that DiCaprio would be playing Fleming just because his company is producing; that's a bit 2+2=5.
I like the way they're talking, though- 'we're not trying to emulate a Bond movie' is enough to interest me. Spymaker and Goldeneye were both pretty adolescent affairs.

Casting-wise, I suppose I could go for the person a few people have been suggesting: Hugh Laurie.

Geoffrey Rush was a bit too old to play Sellers and is now older than the age Fleming died at.

I was asking about the existence of this script only a few months ago - nice to see it is still being floated around the Hollywood corridors of power.

DiCaprio is an excellent actor; his Howard Hughes biopic was superb.

Good luck to all.

DiCaprio as Fleming? Hmmm.... I was hoping for Mark Wahlberg. Oh, well.

Seriously, though, I'm pleasantly surprised that most people seem open-minded about the idea of Leo as Ian. Agreed with ACE that the man is superb in BLOOD DIAMOND, and while I wouldn't go as far as to call him the finest actor of his generation I do think he's good and might well be a fine choice for Flemmmmmmmming.

I think he is in some sort, to accept the offer. I would rather have Daniel Craig play Fleming though... it would actually be pretty cool.

If Daniel Craig can star in a James Bond motion picture, then there is no reason that Leo cannot play Ian Fleming.

It's not that DiCaprio is good at his craft, it's the films that depict historical people that bother me.

If you compare his version of Howard Hughes to that of the one Cubby Broccoli personally knew, you would wonder 'Who's right?'.

I'm afraid that DiCaprio will bring Scorsese onboard and the person of Ian Fleming will become a disjointed psychotic. Can you see DiCaprio standing and looking at himself in the mirror, saying to himself, "You talkin to me, Blofeld?"

This script actually dates back a few years, but the centenary is as good a time as any to get the ball rolling.

CBn first reported on it in October 2005, here.

I don't mind in the least that DiCap is young, famous, goodlooking, talented and absolutely filthy rich. Hey, we all have our faults. But the idea of a film about Fleming doesn't really excite me. No matter how big the Bond films are, does anyone really care about a writer's life? As for the writing itself, it's a solitary act and the best film I can think of on that aspect was Capote. Like Tru, Fleming knew everyone. He was witty, he was charming, he had some war adventures and no doubt he shagged around (some say every which-way). But man, that's like so yesterday. Lord Byron did all that and more and yet his life still doesn't cry to be filmed. We've got Fleming's wonderful books. They're enough for me.

G. Rush would be my choice for Ian, but Hugh Laurie also intrigues me. Hmmm...

As much as I like Leo's acting, I don't think he would quite fit the role.

Hugh Laurie is another excellent choice.

He's too old now (sans some X-Men-esque digital de-aging), but I'd also be intrigued to see Ian McKellan have a shot at playing Fleming.
