Now, who's going to reel you in, Hitch? People want the heavy hitters, so it's not fair for you to sit on the bench with the shades on.

As I used to goad you with on the weekly challenges: you show me yours, and I'll show you mine  !

Oh, you stinkers.

Sorry, love to and all that, but I'm too busy. Besides, I've checked my crappy fanfic vault and it doesn't have a single irredeemably craptacular short story left in it. But best of luck to all concerned. I'm really looking forward to reading everyone's stories. The centenary collection is a great idea for a tribute to Ian Fleming.

I'm writing like mad here to finish off the short story this week. There's nothing like a deadline to get you moving! I'm sure to have my entry completed soon, hopefully on Thursday--the proverbial last minute. As the deadline has been set for February 29th, I suppose that we're safe even if we send off the story on Friday, yes?

Yes.

48 hours... the countdown has started...

...a very long countdown...

...imagine a bald fat man droning "Forty seven hours and fifty eight minutes, and counnnntink"...

...you'd be driven mad after two hours and kill him on three.

As the geyser was about to erupt under his chair MHazard dove off the seat elbowed Irma Bunt and dispatched Blofeld. When he had finished, he e-mailed his completed at the last minute story, took a deep breath and returned to what passed as his real life (except he took a few minutes to visit cb.net and share his relief at finally finishing. How do you folks who crank this stuff out regularly do it anyway? It takes me forever). Good luck to everybody else who's finishing up, you all deserve a vodka martini, shaken and not stirred.

Inspiration only struck me today - I now have an interesting start but I'm lacking the means to bring this to a quick ending...

You're not alone. I've just finished the story and will soon be pounding through my final edit. Then, another story will be on its way! I can't wait to see the finished project. This has been very exciting.

Today is Friday 29 February. A day upon which a lady may propose marriage to a gentleman; a day upon which, if you were born on February 29 1992, you are currently celebrating your fourth birthday, happy birthday, and a day upon which the deadline ends for submitting your short story.

Ticketytocketywahwahbingbongherecomededeadlinehurryhurryhurry*

*Not much of a title, is it? Although I appreciate that some may favour it over Quantum of Solace.

So what we'll do whilst pulling the stories together is open a poll (shortly) upon which story's title to use as the title of the collection. The titles received are all pretty cracking and this exercise in democracy is a way of avoiding the issue that I cannot decide myself. A traditional management ruse so if any of your real-world managers ever propose something similar in a "let the troops decide" extension of democracy, it is because they are too spineless and inept to make any sort of credible decision themselves and should therefore be removed as bloodily as possible.

All right, I surrender.

Sometimes a deadline is the right kind of measure to snap into focus and pound out something inspired. Sometimes, it's just detrimental to the quality of the story.

Clink, the idea still has a lot of potential - therefore I think a novel would do it more justice. Maybe once I'm retired I will have the time for that.

So, barring the sudden inspiration for a one-page-story hitting me somewhere during the day, I'm calling it quits.

Do I at least get a warm pat on the head for trying?

You kid, but I tell you, choosing a bloody title was the most difficult part of this project for me. Nothing seemed to suit the story! I submitted my story just before the deadline day was over, but I spent that last hour or so just agonizing over the title for the story. In fact, I'm still not satisfied with the title I chose. I think I now have a great deal more sympathy for the likes of Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Now that I've had a chance to think about it, and all that being said... Do let me know if there's any chance I can change my title, Jim.

There's still a few leftover Fleming titles you can use! You just might have some difficulty explaining them to the press.

Thank you to all who submitted. I will be in touch over the next few days with suggestions where needs be.

There appear to be 11 suitable stories, and we will work on that basis. The poll above is to choose the title for the collection.

I have not named the authors lest there be any suggestion of bias.

Poll ends 20 March.

(NB for those whose title is not picked through this highly democratic process, don't think that nobody likes your title!)
