"You Know My Name" - Discussion

'You Know My Name' by Chris Cornell has been released to Radio Stations, and it has been 'leaked' onto the web.
Its certainly different, and it certainly won't please everyone. But I was very impressed - its damn cool. Thats right, 'cool', and I think its really going to help Bond's image - especially with the younger generation. The song itself could probably be compared closest with 'The Living Daylights' or 'Live and Let Die', but its very unique and very aggressive. I like Cornell's voice (but I always have anyway), and it suits the song well.
It would have been nice to hear more from the orchestra I think, it compliments the roaring guitars well but could have done more. The lyrics are nice, if a little OTT.
Overall, its different. But I'm whistling it now, which is a good sign!

I won't link to it for fear of getting AJB into trouble
(Ahem- it's only polite to get your hosts' name right!)

I'm just glad we've got a guy singing the song again. YAY! That really makes me happy. I don't know how keen I am on the lyrics yet, but they do sound good sung. I like the chorus...
Arm yourself because no one else here will save you. The odds will betray you and I will replace you. You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you; It longs to kill you. Are you willing to die? The coldness burns through my veins. You know my name.

I'll link to it, and then if it violates CBN's policies the mods can delete it. I'm going to link to it, though, because I think everyone should get a chance to hear it before discussing it.
Hmm... illegal file sharing... I wonder if that might just violate the forum's policies... tricky one, ain't it?

Sony hasn't officially released the song. It leaked therefore we can't link to it. That's why it's illegal.Well, I'm not really up on file sharing, so I don't know what legal vs. illegal is. I don't share files. However, since the reviews of the song are pretty good, I figured SONY wouldn't careHmm... illegal file sharing... Well you just did, and it's pretty straightforward; if it don't belong to you, you don't give it away for free. Especially not in someone else's house.
I sort of understand wher you're coming form on his voice; although I think he's great in the verse and gives it some nice licks, it sounds like he's holding back in the chorus (although I don't think he is). I think he has a sort of lazily powerful voice. He's a more gifted singer than Sheryl Crow, though.

Question: Is 'Casino Royale' mentioned at all in the lyrics? I've listened a couple of times and didn't notice a mention, however I could be (and probably am) mistaken.

I've gone back for seconds. The tune is very catchy. But oh how I wish someone else would be singing this song. Cornell's voice is just not that interesting. At this point I'd rather hear American Idol's Chris Daughtry have a go at it. It needs a deeper voice to go with some of these lyrics. Dare I say Eddie Vedder or Scott Stapp?
As a huge fan of both Pearl Jam and Soundgarden I'd have to say that Cornell is the better vocalist, with a wider range...having said that he doesn't really "let rip" until the last ten seconds of the song, I'm assuming Sony or whoever didn't want the song to go into all out heavy rock. I had also assumed the song was going to be a ballad type of thing, and Cornell can be a bit droney on those songs, and I'm glad that hasn't happened here.
Y'know what else, the song isn't pretentious, which I think has plagued the last couple of Bond themes. They were all trying to, in their way, make their songs sound like a Bond theme, and I don't get that vibe here. It is a catchy rock song, it'll probably get more airplay than the last couple of themes.

The lyrics are laughably poor, no memorable melody. This is nothing more than c*ck-rock.

the guitar work is VERY Bondian at times.... such as around the 1:45- 2:00 mark.... mixed with the trumpet
great stuff!!!
(my only gripe is he's really hard to understand at times)

I wonder if Arnold is going to use any of the tune for a theme in the films.. maybe the love theme? could work...
It's not a love theme that's for sure. Sounds more like the song of a man who kills, going by the lyrics that is. I hope Arnold gets to use "La Vie en Rose" as the love theme.

Do you think I'd let rip with such an opinion after just one listen? I've been listening to nothing but this song. It's utter cack, and I hate to write it, but it's just dirge. Stick it on the back of a Spiderman film. Have you read the lyrics, too?

I've heard complaints that the song sounds very "80s," but I didn't get that vibe at all.

This is awful. They should have gotten Nickelback in. Or Bon-tossing-Jovi. They'd have wheeled out the same rubbish. Forgettable. Asinine. It's as aggressive as a
ing plum. I'm devastated.

I know exactly where you're coming from, although I guess I like it more than you do. But, yeah, it reminds me more than a bit of Dirk Diggler's rock song in BOOGIE NIGHTS.
Would anyone agree that, in parts, it sounds horrifyingly like Spinal Tap's "Rock & Roll Creation"?

I love it! I think it might be my new favorite Bond song. It's definately a different direction, and I think it works. Chris Cornell's voice sounds great, and I especially like the guitar work. Overall, a fantastic Bond song.
