BTW, we can make our displeasure known to MGM Home Video here: http://www.mgm.com/help.do

I just sent them this:

'Lots of James Bond fans are upset at the way you are planning to release the Ultimate Edition dvds. Four poorly packaged, poorly thought-out sets? No attache case? No option for all the dvds in one set? No individual dvds for sale (so that fans are "forced" to buy the "sets"? Staggered release dates? Many of us will just hang on to our Special Editions and possibly rent a couple of the UE's via blockbuster or netflix. What a shame for us all. Your marketing/sales dept are either ignorant in extremis, or greed overcame sense and you thought you could get people to buy these poorly-thought-out 5-dvd "sets". Think again.'

I bent the truth a bit with the stuff about only renting a couple of them! I'll find a way to see them all. But I hate to reward the sods in the sales/marketing dept with a full price purchase of the lot.

Bon-san....you are aware that Fox are handling this release aren't you.

Yes, I'm aware MGM gave Fox the distribution deal instead of giving it Sony. But I'm sure that letters to MGM will have an effect. And, Fox's dvd site doesn't seem to have a 'contact us' link. I did send the same message to the general Fox.com site. I will probably send it to Sony, too. They might use it to make Fox look bad. :) That might be the most effective method of complaint.

The sets are now up for pre-order at Deep Discount DVD for $55 each with free shipping. That's $220 for all 4 sets.

I'm as disappointed as anyone that they're being broken up over a month but you have to admit, that's not a bad price. Looking at Amazon UK, they're charging $386 for all the films.

And remember that 2 weeks after they come out on Nov 7th, DDD will have their 20% off sale when you can get them for a very nice $44 each...

Quite a price improvement at least.

Not bad prices, but I'd rather hold out for the brick & mortar deals. I'm betting they'll be $49.99 in the first week, AND one of the stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc) has some kind of bonus Casino Royale preview disc.

Amazing that we never got an official announcement about these. All we know came from DVD fan sites, and now here they are on Amazon. Maybe official word is yet to come with the box art.

You know...they've really screwed this up for the anal retentive collector like me. It's bad enough we're not getting a monster box, not able to buy them individually, not getting them all at the same time. But look at these new boxes. Now, I like the vol number in the gunbarrel on the box spine...looks cool and would look good side by side on the shelf. But why do they list the titles on the spine as well? I don't want these on my shelf in their screwed up random order. Just as with the other sets, I pull them all out of the boxes and rearrange them in order. But now with the titles frozen on box spines...ughhhh!...looks like [censored].

I can't look at GF beside TWINE beside DAF. I can't. I won't!

I'm going to toss the boxes (or at least put them away somewhere) and just have the DVDs in proper order on the shelf.

As much as I wanted these, I probably won't get them out of principle. 4 boxsets as I said earlier just really turns me off. I'm tired of getting screwed over with this type of [censored]. I'll wait till I can acquire them in the fashion that I want to rather than being force fed them out of order for no damn reason.

Fox really screwed up.

I'm also with Zencat on the spine bit. What kind of idiot puts all the James Bond films on their shelf out of order? It's one thing to not care, but something like this? Come on. Then they print the titles out of order on the spine. GG Fox.

I'm sure I will get them eventually, but like you K1, I resent that they expect me to buy them in their particular [censored]-backward way. It's not just the boxes and spines...but I find it a risk to invest in half the movies without knowing when and how the others will be released. I got burned by buying half the Young Indy series, only to have the others never come out. Not that I don't fear the other Bond DVDs won't come out. Of course they will. But six months is an eternity in the land of technology, and, at this time, VERY unpredicable. Will they suddenly decide to do the whole series in HD? Will they suddenly decide to do a monster box with the DVDs I already bought? And what about CR? How will that fit into my new set?

As I said, I will get these eventually. But not in the way they are offering them. I will rent them on Netflix for now and wait until I can buy them in a manner that makes sense to me, and at a time when I know I won't get burned.

(But had they released them all in a monster box -- I would have bought them all like the slobbering fanboy I am, no question.)

It sucks we're not getting the option of a monster box and it sucks the format these are coming in and the way they are being released.

But I'm glad to admit I can't wait to see these DVDs. I have been since the specs were announced way back in April or whenever it was. I've got plenty of other great Bond collectibles on my shelves that will look better than these things. Just as long as what comes inside the cases is worth it.

This packaging announcement has made my mind up for me.
I was holding out for the Region 1 releases purely so that we could watch the movies at my girlfriends. Well, we can always watch the SE editions at her place and I am off to order the Region 2 releases in the attache case.

The packaging actually looks quite nice. I would have rather had the attache case, or at least all the films at once, but in the end as the long as the contents of the discs are the same I'm happy. :)

Upon further review, the collections look rather slim. Kind reminds me of a TV collection. Take Battlestar Galactica for instance (check the alternate images for individual cases). I hope this isn't the deal, but I won't surprised if they did this to save some pennies or something.

I'm really conflicted. I wanted these DVDs, but I'm also very against the way in which they're being released. Give me a box with them all and I'll go for it. How hard was that to offer an option? :)

I wish they would release the boxsets by decade, instead of completely random order.

Sounds like you guys are getting a raw deal over there. I've just been buying them individually one a week (got 7 now). Suits me well. Those 5-DVD packages just look odd. Ugh.

That's pretty much always the case when it comes to Bond DVD releases in the US.

The video sure looks like a major improvement, and after just watching DN last night and trying to find a decent sound setting on my surround system I definitely want these movies in DTS 5.1. And since all the movies are out by Christmas I'll buy them, but I sure like the looks of the UK case!

There are enough CBn members that would pay for it that there must be some way to get that beautiful metal case in this country. Any bright ideas?
