I was wondering this the other day, while watching Dr No with my wife.

She likes some parts of the Bond films, but sometimes says "That's silly", which in most cases is just after an over-the-top action sequence, stunt or fight. She doesn't mind going to see the new ones when they come out at the cinema either....which is good.

She does like some of the actors who play Bond, and she likes the locations too. She remembers FYEO best, because we visited Meteora in Greece where the climax was filmed.

Do you think women like the Bond films or not? Are they just for men, or can a woman be a Bond-fan too?????

Of course. I know plenty that dig Bond.

CBn has a few here as proof of that.

I think there are certainly more male Bond fans, but there are definitely some women who like the James Bond films. Actually, I have a friend (a woman) who dislikes Bond on principle. She claims he's a "sexist pig."

Meteora is so beautiful. When did you two go there? I was there way back in 1993.

Hi Athena

Great photo!

We were there in August 2003. It was really beautiful and strange too, I think it is amazing that monks and nuns live in some of those places all alone.

Yes, I realised that you are a woman AND a Bond fan. I was thinking about the cinema, when a Bond film comes out, do you ever see a group of women in there on their own, or is every woman in the cinema accompanying a man?

I have loved this stuff since I started reading Fleming @ age 12 or 13.
I am an ardent feminist (card carrying member of Now  ), as well. I remember the period in which 007 was created 50+ years ago. But even then, Flemings women included many ground breakers...non traditional women, which is what appears to attract Bond.

I also like what film makers have done to keep the series freash regarding the new "M" and some of the more recent female leads.

To answer the original question, I have seen and gone with groups of women to Bond films. They are not just a guy thing.

I had a "Bond Party" this summer for some good female friends, some who were not current on 007....we all had a blast(especially as we tired the Vesper :D )

No. We hate 'em. I, for one, am here for the guys.

</sarcasm>

I'm really not sure how to answer your question, other than with the fact that I'm here. I'll admit to preferring the books, but I have no shame in announcing myself to be a "rabid James Bond fan" with no further explanation, knowing most laypeople will assume that I only like the films.

I don't imagine that there's a huge faction of female Bond fans in "real life," but in my experience there are actually quite a few females who casually enjoy Bond on their own, without the benefit of a male to help them understand it.

Interesting.

Sexy Bond girls are important to straight males who go to see the movies.

Just how important is it that Bond is good-looking & sexy to straight women???

My girlfriend is a casual James Bond fan as in that she likes them, but there are other film series that she prefers (Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future etc etc).

We actually watched From Russia With Love and Goldfinger this past weekend. She has decided she wants to watch them in order and even though that means that next weekend that will mean watching the boring snore-fest Thunderball I went along with it.

Actually I wonder if I could just tell her that Thunderball was not an official movie and move right along to You Only Live Twice

She gets a few things wrong (like when we talked about cars she said the gadget car in For Your Eyes Only was more famous than the one in Goldfinger but she tries and its her enthusiasm that counts.

I've been a James Bond since I was a young girl, first with the movies and then the books.

James Bond is a classic Alpha/Lone Wolf-type hero and that's one of the reasons I'm mad about him. And yes, he is sexy because he is a bit cool and aloof but you sense there's a lot going on beneath that surface emotionally.

In the books I think you get a better idea of that but the movies have done that pretty well (with Connery, Dalton, and Brosnan, and I think Craig will take it to a whole new level).

As a woman, Bond is probably my favorite hero of all time.

I know a couple of girls who liked them. There wern;t hardcore fans like me.

My ex girlfriend said she saw TWINE and it wasn't that bad. She also didn't have a problem with my 12" sideshow dolls. Which I was quite surprised about.

My girlfriend and I watched On Her Majesty's Secret Service over the Fourth of July holiday and she really liked it. I think it surprised her since she didn't expect to like it given all the negativity the general public seem to feel towards it.

Of course she initially disliked the Tracy character and that position of really detesting her was maintained until the weddding scene. In fact when the scene started with Tracy and Blofeld chatting she yelled "B*tch! I knew she was a baddie!"

Still, we were both choked up by the downbeat ending and she was like "That was so sad, no wonder people didn't like the movie."

Now it's onto Diamonds Are Forever and then my favorite era - the Roger Moore years.

Happy days!

I don't know. Some of the villains are handsome, in that really weird way. Alec Trevelyan comes to mind. I'm trying to get my girlfriend to finish TWINE with me, unfortunately, we were never able to. So far, she likes what she has seen of TWINE better than From Russia with Love.

Well it was a combination of things and I don't remember in what order they came first...but anyways here's how it went: I owned the Nintendo 64 and bought the Goldeneye game. Back then I didn't know a whole lot about James Bond, just what I saw in the game. I was hooked so much on that game that I later bought the movie and watched it. I liked it a lot. I remember that that was the time when Tomorrow Never Dies opened and it was on a winter vacation so I went and saw it. That was the first James Bond movie I saw in theatres. I loved that one and loved Pierce Brosnan in it. And then two years later The World is not Enough opened and I went and saw it. I absolutely loved that one also. Even more than TWINE or Goldeneye. So by that Christmas I bought all the films on DVD and watched them. So that's how I've been hooked with James Bond ever since and why Pierce is my favorite Bond.

I'm a decent fan of Bond. No other franchise has my heart (though I do like Star Wars--the original trilogy!), but there are other films I prefer. That said, I brought my entire collection of Bond books to college.

I do know that in my very politically correct hometown, being a female Bond fan is a contradiction in terms. So I've been kind of a closet fan for some time. Grr. :)

On the other hand, now that I've moved to Chicago, this probably will change. I've been looking for a good Bond poster to hang in my room (one with pictures of all the Bonds, if I can finagle it). And I might just haul some female friends off to CR in November. :P

Some girls seem to like it, though it wouldn't be their first choice to watch.

I went out with a gal who would watch one Bond film with me for every few episodes of Friends that I'd watch with her.

I think she got the better deal.

I've tried to get my girlfriend to watch 007 movies but she just doesn't get it. :)

"All he does is drive fast cars, blow stuff up, and get with hot chicks!"

Though she's a computer animator so on the more recent films she would watch for the CGI scenes and usually comment on how they did that, or how they could do it better.

So from a plot-line point, she hates them, but she appreciates the technical aspects.

When The World is not Enough came out I went once with my 3 best friends (all guys) but then I saw it again when I gathered all my girlfriends and dragged them to the film. LOL. :) Then with Die Another Day I just dragged all the friends I could to the film... ended up seeing it three times cause different groups of friends all wanted to see it with me since I was the ubar-fan of the bunch. :P

Yes they do. I remember hearing Liz Clayman of CNBC, the cable business channel, going "ga ga" over Roger Moore and saying how she is a "child of the 70s". And then she mentioned "The Spy Who Loved Me".
