Do women find funny men attractive ?

View Post

Absolutely so Jameswp! :)
Fun alone isn't enough.. I mean it goes with everything else, but I believe it's a very important part of a man's personality. And one of the reasons why I like Bond.. he's got a very special sense of humour...wouldn't say funny.. but WITTY. :)
In general though, as Welshcat can well witness, since we all adore him because he's so funny.. definitely! :)

Ah girls, Alessandra and Wendy, you both flatter me too much.

Well you sure know how to raise a guy's spirits. I had developed such a poor self-image when I looked in the mirror, I thought I was a vampire! :) :) - j/k

Actually, Saint, I have invited my favourite Sir Roger expert, LADY TEMPLAR, to join us.  Unfortunately, she is out of town until early next week, but I am certain that, upon her return, she will be delighted to give you all the information you require!

Now . . . how's that for service?  :)

Well, I've met Lady Templar and, considering the fact that she runs a website devoted to Sir Roger, I know how she feels about him.

Well, after going through 5 pages just to post the 1st time, I read your & Allesandra's opinion of Roger so, that's enough for me. You two dislike him, Lady Templar loves him, and Athena likes him.

No -- I don't dislike him at all, and I'm reasonably certain that I never said I did.

It's just that I adore Timothy, and love Sean. The others just don't do it for me, that's all.

In fact, I would have to place Roger as my 3rd choice. He was always, and still is, last time I saw him in 2002, handsome, suave, a gentleman, and with a wit I always enjoyed.

I admit I have yet to see OHMSS, so cannot rate George on the basis of performance, but, as far as Pierce, as good-looking as he may be, there's just something about him that has always bugged me (but that's another discussion).

Hi Saint. :)
Why do you say I dislike Roger Moore.. I don't dislike him at all.. he's simply one of my LEAST FAVOURITE BONDs.. but that has nothing to do with other things! Least favourite in that, in the context of a movie I love and actors I love, he's the one I like the less. Liking less than others you adore and disliking are two very different things!
I dislike people like Russel Crowe, not certainly Sir Roger! Who is a very accomplished, classy and well educated person.
And a fine actor. :)
So puuhhllleeeze.. I just don't find him one of my favourite Bonds, but I would never want him to think I'm against him from your words.. because that is not the case!!
Making a count of what you mentioned, anyway, puts us in a perfectly balanced position. 2-2. Ball at the centre, kick off please! :) (talking soccer here.. :))
ciao!

For example, I LOVED him in the Saint.. please don't misunderstand an opinion on Bond with a dislike for him as person, because that's not the case.

Kara Milovy's earlier post regarding humorous men can take on a larger perspective.

It seems it's a little easier to define "it" than to agree who definitely has "it" (I thought it would have been the other way around).

So far, the only consensus "It Guy" is Sean Connery; the rest of us need to buy flowers and beg... :) :)

well, let's be honest... we will always find a very handsome man attractive. Unless he proves to be lacking what needs to be in between his ears..: BRAIN! :)
Actually.. at times Bond responds exactly to the above description.
I am thinking about the beach scene in Goldeneye where Pierce Brosnan is alone with Natasha, and has a certain melancholy going on in his thoughts.. and she asks why he does all that etc.
the dialogue was very nice.. and all that scene showed a different side of Bond that doesn't come up so frequently. I really liked it. :)

Hmm... I always thought that Brosnan was simply aggrieved in that scene by the fact that old Mr Bean said Natasha tasted of strawberries. Then, Bond began longing for the days when he last ate a bowl of them and how his parents took him strawberry picking on a farm. And now look at him - instead of enjoying those carefree days, he's now some cold blooded killer with not a strawberry in sight! :)

Let me turn the tables here.

Which actresses, at any point in their careers, had "it", and would have made excellent --- or at least interesting --- Bond girls?

Dalton's Wendy and I would agree on Elizabeth Taylor: YES!!!

I would have "no" to Katharine Hepburn (but only because of that New England accent), Bette Davis (for a bazillion reasons), or just about any actress with a smattering of fame in the 50s and early 60s, solely because of the Bimbo Factor (No "tight sweater dames" posing as Ph.D.'s, please). I also would have given a big "no" to Marilyn Monroe, but only because Bond films in production have always prided themselves on being smooth, family-oriented operations; Marilyn would have upset that apple cart in a week.

I would have said yes to Ingrid Bergman, Sophia Loren, any of the Hitchcock leading ladies.

I have lots more on my "yes", "no", and "maybe" lists, both current and "less active" actresses, but let's at least start with these.

I agree on all your choices. Here are some more:

Catherine Zeta-Jones: Yes
Ava Gardner: Yes
Sophia Loren: Yes
Gwyneth Paltrow: No
Faye Dunaway (circa 1968): Yes
Grace Kelly: No (Grace & Gwyneth for the same reason; I don't like Bond opposite icy Hitchcock blondes; it worked with Miranda Frost but not with Holly Goodhead, who was icy if not blonde)
Lana Turner: Yes
Jean Hagan: No
Gloria Graham: Yes (she's so odd, yet so sexy)

ooh yea, that's true.!
and Ann Margret! (period when she did that movie where she danced on the table.. drop dead gorgeous and full of passion)
of today's types, I am thinking about my favourite ones, but we'll have to adjust to time..
so I'd say
Ashley Judd (see the "double jeopardy" character she plays)
Michelle Pfeiffer (not now, too old now, but a few years ago... catwoman vs bond, because SHE is the real catwoman, not halle berry)
NO to Gwyneth Paltrow, agreed
Cameron Diaz (I don't particularly like her, but she'd make a hell of a Bond girl I think)
and also Lucy Liu! hadn't thought about her but she'd be TERRIFIC as Bond girl!
HUGE NO to the other Charlie's Angel Drew Barrymore. just UGLY despite all the hairstyle, makeup and refinement she's come up with. doesn't work.
but the biggest no as far as i'm concerned goes to:
ANGELINA JOLIE. just no, no, no and no!! she does disgust me.

Elizabeth Taylor, yes.
But the actresses with most "it" ever, to me, were Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. The "it" for a man and for a woman is a very different thing.
Anyway, Audrey and Grace.. mannnnn.. I could see both of them giving Bond a hell of a hard time to get them! :)*
Agreed, any Hitchcock leading lady.
I would add a name which I don't know whether it's familiar to you.. Virna Lisi. The woman is like over 60 now and still just BEAUTIFUL. Anyway at the peak of her career (she did do movies in hollywood so you may know who she is), she was simply irresistible. Sexy, refined, and with lots of character. The perfect Bond girl. :)

*see "to catch a thief" and "sabrina" for an idea of what I mean :)

Hmmm... these Hitchcock ladies! We really need to get back to that style in a Bond movie. To Catch A Thief is an excellent example of something I'd like to see again, with Grace Kelly driving fast like that around an exotic locale or mountainous road. We had that sort of thing in Thunderball with Fiona Volpe - in fact she was a bit like a Hitchcock-type lady. The actresses these days... I dunno, they sometimes seem to be very commercıalısed and lacking that same sort of elegance and sophistication. Give me a European actress or someone with a mid-atlantic accent.

Aaah Welshcat...*SMACK* to you for this comment. :)
Far too many men nowadays don't have the faintest idea how style does make a difference in a woman.
Sabrina is my favourite movie ever... and To Catch a Thief ranks second with some others. Grace Kelly was just so perfectly stylish and misterious at the same time in it... a true Bond girl, with some more refinement respect to usual Bond girls.
Yes the driving scene was exactly what I had in mind... and why not set it on the Cote d'Azur for Bond too?? It's always a great location.
the actresses nowadays definitely lack elegance and sophistication compared to Grace and Audrey, but hey, those two were the epithome of class and beauty.
Michelle Pfeiffer has style and class.. and my other favourite Ashley Judd too.. which is why I mentioned them. Of course, others may disagree with my choice, just an opinion.
based on this, I think most of you will understand why (and I'm not alone in this) I will not even buy the DVD of Casino Royale if Angelina Jolie is the Bond girl.

Another old, Bond-like movie (at least in terms of filming) is Three Coins in a Fountain with Louis Jordan. That takes place mostly in Italy - the location photography and scenery seems very reminiscent of Bond, even some parts of FRWL. The whole movie is very picturesque and the style of it has much more of a charm than the current Bond movies. I'd like to see CR get back to that. But I have a feeling that it won't, since it's billed as being more gritty. I hope "gritty" doesn't sacrifice the lush locations and expansive feel to the film.

Just thinking about this question, Saint.
I still believe we really need Lady Templar here, because, despite the fact that her well-known preference for Sir Roger may colour some of her opinions, nevertheless, she is an extremely intelligent person, and her answers will be honest and objective. And, of course, her expertise on the subject individual is invaluable.

As I wrote to you, she is out-of-reach to us until Monday next, but she has written me that she will join us then!

Cheers! (now I sound like Bondian!) :)

P. S. WELSHCAT -- just saw your last post. Louis Jourdan! Another guy with eternal IT, who would have made a spectacular Bond, were it not for the unshakable (but marvellous!) French accent.

Three Coins in THE Fountain, Welshcat, Darling . . . also starring Clifton Webb, who, in his day, would also have been a sensational Bond! (I have in my possession an old hard-cover copy of a complilation of the best of the original Vanity Fair magazine, of the Twenties and Thirties. In it is a photograph of Webb, relaxing at his ease, at Cap d'Antibes. Ultra-chic!)
