I can't believe how amazing the reviews are. By comparison, CASINO ROYALE was panned by critics.

Based on all these raves, if THE DARK KNIGHT doesn't turn out to be a truly lifechanging experience, I'll want my money back.

Agreed. I've been trying to lower my expectations for the film in recent days to avoid the reaction that you mention in your post (although I'm still expecting a masterpiece of a film). THE DARK KNIGHT should be a fantastic film (I haven't read a review yet that even hints at anything truly negative), but any time a film gets this much hype and the expectations are so high, it makes it even more disappointing if the film doesn't live up to the hype.

Indeed. Ledger's locked for the Oscar nomination (and probably the win, given that there's not a more striking performance between now and then). And the very fact that a Best Picture nomination is a viable option is incredible.

I wouldn't expect, that, Loomis.

I think you need to go into the film having read Devin at CHUD.com's Holy Hyperbole Batman, and then adjust your expectations accordingly. I can see you acknowledging, like Devin does, that THE DARK KNIGHT is a wonderfully superior sequel. But my guess is that you, like many others who will become more vocal after the film's release, will also come to find it terribly overhyped.

My guess about myself, though? I think I'll come out raving about how it's brilliant and awesome and everything I ever wanted in a Batman film, how it deserves Oscar nominations across the board, etc. and so forth.

I saw Michael Caine on the news last night saying he wouldn't be surprised if Ledger got the Oscar.

At the very least, THE DARK KNIGHT is assured to be a better superhero movie than this upcoming and anticipated adaptation of another classic comic book vigilante.

I'm going to see it in approximately 9 hours. I haven't really been following the hype, but am quite excited. This will be one of the rare occasions where I haven't completely spoiled a movie I am anticipating.

I saw TDK this morning in a packed first session, it opened July 16 here in Australia. Loved it. Ledger owns the role of The Joker for all time. The film is well worth the wait, the best Batman film by a mile. 10/10.

1. THE DARK KNIGHT
2. BATMAN BEGINS
3. BATMAN RETURNS
4. BATMAN (1989)
5. BATMAN FOREVER
6. BATMAN AND ROBIN

Suit yourself, but quite frankly I think this film was made to be seen on the big screen in all its glory. It is a spectacle that I wont forget any time soon.

I thought It was quite cool.

This is from some fool on IMDb...

Wow... Words cannot even describe how incredibly awful this movie was. The acting was poor, mediocre at best, (yes, that is including Heath Ledger's supposedly "oscar-worthy" performance as the Joker) the plot was simply terrible and amazingly uneven, as if no one had bothered to make a final edit. It is one of the slowest and most boring movies I have ever seen, I have never walked out of a movie before but I was highly tempted with this mess, checking my watch every few minutes before the one hour mark in what ended up being a two and a half hour movie that seemed oh so much longer. I found that the best part of the film was when the credits started rolling. Whilst Michael Bay's blockbuster movies are terrible, at least they are somewhat entertaining. Sadly, I cannot say the same for "The Dark Knight."

Ignore all the hype and don't be fooled by the trailers which suggest this may be a good film - This movie was plain terrible, a complete train wreck. 1/10

Ditto. Time to tune down expectations. It's a movie, not the sermon on the mount.

The Spirit looks like a deliciously awful film though. I've got to see that in the cinema.

Yeah, I definitely get the impression that THE DARK KNIGHT must be seen at the cinema. (Obviously, all films should - ideally, anyway - be seen at the cinema, but some more than others, and TDK definitely fits the bill.)

Indeed, I guess the only way to properly see TDK is to check out THE IMAX EXPERIENCE, compared to which a regular theatrical viewing will be the equivalent of watching it on DVD.

It's always the same some jerk will come on and try and say a film which has been universally acclaimed is rubbish just to feel different.

I've seen people say Begins is terrible, no Batman & Robin is terrible, I know it's down to personal taste but anyone hoping to be taken serious which such a review is plain stupid.

The reviews are off the scale, The Times Online gave this 5 stars, I know things can get over hyped but if so many critics love it, I can't see it failing.

Regarding the Oscar talk, if puff peices like Titanic (poorly directed & acted ) & Forrest Gump, Gladiator are Oscar worthy then it's time the academy started to reward blockbusters more.

LOTR Return of the King did so why not Dark Knight?

Next Friday 2.45 Location UK Birmingham Imax I will get my answer I guess!

Just came back from seeing it.

Preliminary feelings: I have to say I don't see what all the fuss is about. I actually think I prefer Batman Begins. That is not to say TDK is not a good film- or even great film. I really enjoyed it. I just don't see how it has generated universal near perfect reviews. Maybe I shouldn't have payed attention to reviews, because I can't help but feel slightly disappointed.

As an aside, this is the first time I have been in an audience that applauded at the end of a film(in Australia that just doesn't happen). Maybe it was because it was opening night, made up of hardcore Batman fans, maybe it was for Heath Ledger or maybe The Dark Knight is just that damned good.

Yeah. Reactionary rubbish mixed with a heap of sour grapes. Maybe it was written by someone who worked on Mama Mia, which USA Today predicts will take a massive drubbing. The paper also features a truly fascinating article on how Ledger created the voice for the role. And the importance of a unique voice to all of filmdom's top villains: Darth V, Hannibal, Anton Chigurh (No Country For Old Men), Hal (2001), etc.

Can anyone here offer the link for the piece? Others might like a look.

WOW.

Just....WOW.

Saw the film a few hours ago and my adrenalin is still pumping! By far the best superhero film ever made...if not one of the best film's ever made. It's just a masterpiece. Nolan handles the film perfectly, with Dent's transition into Two-Face being a really compelling and heartbreaking journey.

And of course Heath's performance is by far the stand-out of the year! He IS the Joker now and forever, I just can't see it being done by anyone else. His Joker really is utterly psychotic and you really believe he has what it takes to destroy Gotham. If Heath doesn't win an Oscar for this, then I have lost all faith in the system. His introduction to the mobster is brilliant, and his 'magic trick' got a lot of laughs!

And the climax! I have never experienced such dread and tension before while in a movie theater. How this movie got a PG-13 rating I'll never know - it really does push it. Now from my experience Australian audiences tend to be quite reserved while in movie theaters - so it came somewhat as a surprise that it received a massive round of applause at the end.

But then again - our Heath deserves it and so does Nolan.

Bravo.

 Another bad review on IMDb.

Dumb film with a forgettable actor, namely Heath ledger

One of the most over-hyped over-rated rehashed remade Batman film in years. Even the great actors couldn't lift this mediocre and predictable film. Heath Ledger puts in a forgettable performance in a highly forgettable film. No doubt Australia's simple minds will rejoice in his silly, easy and hammy role. Its good business for the Motion Picture to give him an Oscar fro his dumb performance as Ledger put in a great publicity campaign for the film. Batman fans are similar to fifty year old Abba fans both embarrassingly one dimensional and possessed of a simplistic over-adulation of superficial and artificial no-talent icons.

This film is what the BUSINESS side of the International film business is all about a formulated and contrived marketing formula involving action heroes simple plots and great CGI for a captive market and its need to indulge in escapism for mental gratification. I am so glad I do not have to pay to see most films because of Industry contacts. two and half stars for its production values and nothing else.
