Despite Batman Begins' success, and the obvious tease at that movie's end, it feels a little strange to be talking to this particular filmmaker about returning at a studio's behest to a territory he's already covered. Empire wonders if a writer/director so celebrated for playing with narrative form

"They're tricky. It's difficult naming third movies that are any good.
GOLDFINGER!

I'm sure Nolan will return when push comes to shove, he was saying the same thing after BEGINS. That being said, it's looking like TDK is shaping up to be the ultimate Bat-film so I can understand him not wanting to do a third out of fear of not living up to it and having it come up a disappointment. A third may not even be necessary, although I would love to see it.
If Nolan does step out I'd like to see David Fincher take the reigns or maybe have Darren Aronofsky get his shot at it. I thought Aronofsky's YEAR ONE script that he was developing was pretty lame but I wonder what he would do with an already established Batman. Bale also seemed willing to work with him on that YEAR ONE project so there wouldn't be a huge problem there. That being said, if Nolan left it would be a huge loss; he may be my favorite director.
That is a fantastic article though. 45 more days!

Indeed. If there isn't a great story to film, he shouldn't do it.
It's true that THE DARK KNIGHT includes all of a story arc that he and Goyer originally intended to spread out over two films, so in a sense, it'll have taken the story as far as he ever originally intended it to.
That said, I *do* think there are good, exciting stories in the source material that could be used as inspiration for a terrific follow-up to THE DARK KNIGHT, so in all honesty, he really should do a third installment.
If not him, though, I say they bring David Fincher on board.

Fincher is definately my first choice if Nolan doesn't make a third. With the right script, that guy is a genious.
Yes David Fincher is a good choice.

The Joker definitely has his own theme and it's the complete opposite of elegant. It's very provocative and very raw.
James did an amazingly elegant job with Harvey Dent. It goes from extraordinarily elegant to the depths of despair hints Zimmer. He and Howard split duties for the title character's dual sides as Bruce Wayne is very much James Newton Howard's work and Batman is very much (my) work. Once he puts the mask on, it gets pretty brutal...very brutal.

Here's a nice teaser for you about the Joker theme:
But the theme Zimmer wrote for the Joker, played in the film by the late Heath Ledger, is a damning piece of music. It's an intense eight-minute piece that comes off like an orchestral interpretation of a something created by Trent Reznor's Nine Inch Nails. Zimmer says the work is only two notes, but the two notes are twisted and manipulated into mimicking the sounds of thunder, razors and all sorts of clatter heard in alleyways probably better left unexplored.

Splendid. I like the shot of Joker in front of the downed truck armed with the Smith and Wesson M-76 Submachine Gun.
He looks very Cagney-like in that picture. I can't wait.

Anyway, by far the best look at the visual spectacle THE DARK KNIGHT will be offering. Looks beautiful and breathtaking... a big step up from BEGINS. I might have to make an effort to see it on IMAX at some point, just to see how they've taken advantage of that format.

A nice, large offering from Total Film. I like Garry Oldman's quote, "How do you police the Joker?"
Yea, I liked that one too. There were a lot of great quotes and little pieces of the film that we haven't heard before (such as Alfred's tale of the jewel thief, what a neat little piece of information). I also was intrigued by the terrorism analogy that the story has. I wonder what was in Maggie's segment that the Joker crossed out...hmmm...
I do have to laugh though at the fact that they included fan-art in the article.
